Series 5! I've read Awdry's biography by Brian Sibley which is worth the read and according to that book, Awdry meant for the engines to get the blame all the time so it would protect the reputation of the people who worked on the railway while he was writing the books and those who worked on the railway were happy about that so they didn't have to tell their kids that they screwed up or be embarrassed or whatever. IMO, there should be double blame. The message didn't get through in time to get Henry away from the coastal track, yes, but Henry was also rude to Thomas and shouldn't have brushed off his warning. Engines, trucks, vehicles, and people all did something that led to each of the accidents. Not that they all had a role in every single crash literally but they all did something for a crash whether it would be intentional or not. There are circumstances beyond everyone's control indeed. Again, Awdry was trying to protect the reputation of those who worked on the railway. Do whatever you can do with the next lists. Don't exert yourself.

On one hand, the engines are helpless without their drivers such as Thomas comes to Breakfast while in later seasons, it seems they can just stop and go whenever it's convenient. It's a pretty weird continuity thing.

Hehe, I think in the smelters, the duality of the lighting between the yellow light area and the red light area could be this class of Life and Death almost. Or Death and Rebirth. The red light area is where the grabber is located, this is where Stepney is left for dead, where once he's picked up and squashed by the grabber, his remains will be tossed into the melting pot where he'll cease to be, become one with the molten metal which is burning and bubbling. The yellow light area, though, looks like its where the big ladles are dumped. There is even a ladle on a little overhead track above the rails, and I've seen lots of footage of steel being poured out of the smelting furnaces. When steel gets poured, it's bright yellow and bright like the sun. It starts our orange/red as the smelting process melts the metal down, the pure steel settling to the bottom and all the impurities floating to the top or being burned off. And here is where the kind of death and rebirth duality comes in. Like, if Stepney is scrapped, his life will be over, but his body will go on to be part of something completely new. But in order to make that transition from steam engine to a raw material with immense potential, he has to be committed to a death sentence where his life will be ended in the cruelest ways possible; suddenly and painfully.

It does seem very clear James Percy and Toby were favorites of Allcroft and while Duck at some level was too it seems they weren't clear what to do with him here so they just made him a secondary one but I don't think they were very big on Edward which is why he wasn't that big here (who knows how much more could've done with Daisy in the Classic era had it not been for the sexism controversy plus how she had to share BoCo's chassis anyways). With the narrow gauge engines, it's too bad they couldn't get to making large scale models of Sir Handel and Duke (who never got one) at this point as it seems like there could've been plenty more story potential with both of them though as I know money gets in the way. With why they chose which narrow gauge engines to become large scale first, I'd say they chose Rusty due to being prioritized by Allcroft the most, Duncan because who doesn't love him, Skarloey because he's the #1 and main face of all the narrow gauge engines with Rheneas due to being tied in with him, and Peter Sam likely because of how big he was in Season 4 plus how endearing he is in general but surely there'd be random coach and truck model pieces they could've had Sir Handel and Duke built in place of. With Bertram maybe they had more plans for him but as I said building another large scale model for him would cost money.

My answer to your question bout the lead in Horrid Lorries is in my personal opinion i think its safe to say Percy and Toby are co leads. First half is percy second half is Toby then they both come together at the end.

I think this is the first season so far with no outright bad episodes (episodes below the mid tier). Season 4 had Special Attraction as a bad episode IMO, Season 3 had Percy, James, and the Fruitful Day and No Joke for James, Season 2 had Better Late Than Never and The Runaway, Season 1 had Thomas' Train and Thomas Goes Fishing, with Thomas' Christmas Party only being bad for being a Part 2 to a Part 1 that wasn't adapted from the book series. But even though Gordon and the Gremlin is the worst of Season 5, it's still better than some of the later series' best/better episodes. As Unlucky Tug put it, it was an episode where "things just happen", and the same could be said for the other lower tier episodes in this season.

Season 5 was certainly great with its perfectly balanced mix of intensity/action/suspense and humor. I also like Alec Baldwin’s characterizations, especially lady Hatt. It also shows Thomas to be the most mature, humble and caring and at his peak as a character.

The only problem I have with Lady Hatt's Birthday Party is that...... ITS A 3- STRIKE FORMULA EPISODE. TOPAHM GETS INTO TROUBLE THREE TIMES AND THE LAST ONE WHEN HE FALLS INTO THE MUD PIT IS THE BIG BAD ONE. BUT, I'll give this episode a pass just for the humor. 😅

I have to disagree. Topham Hatt doesn't intentionally make three mistakes, they were just unfortunate circumstances. The difference being in the CGI era, the characters make really stupid decisions that drag on throughout the episode, while in Lady Hatt's Birthday Party, it's actually funny and hilarious.
