It's funny how perceptions are so different. I've been listening to A Night at the Opera since it came out (I almost wore out the CD of the And Then There Was Silence single before that) and to me it's a masterpiece. Thomen might not have been happy with the music, but his drumming is absolutely spectacular throughout the album and the drums really stand out in the mix. In that sense, to me it almost represents the pinnacle of his drumming, and I'm a huge fan of his drumming. It combined his hard hitting, Lombardo-esque classic style, with a more progressive approach. It's a real shame that he left Blind Guardian, because the band hasn't been the same without him. I basically stopped paying attention after A Twist in the Myth. On the other hand, when I try to listen to anything by Thomen's current band Mentalist, I cringe at how bad I find it, because of the incredibly simplistic and boring songwriting. But other people love it and he seems happy. There you go. It takes all kinds.

Agree about the Night at the Opera drums. I am glad others see it this way too. The Soulforged and And Then There Was Silence are among my all time favorite songs from BG. But regarding the rest of the album, I think it could have been better they went in the direction suggested by Thomen a bit more. But still much better than the following album. Shame that Savage Circus didn't have bit more intelligent lyrics. Otherwise their first album could have been great.

Great interview, although short. Thought it would be longer. Now this might be an unpopular opinion, but when I first heard the band's early stuff I didn't like it that much because that sound was too bizarre for me. Now I love all of them. Each album is unique in its own way. Sure, A Night at the Opera was a hard pill to swallow for me, but overall it's a great album.

Raz Music I found part 2 a week (or two) ago. It was great to listen. Btw, when I was about to listen to part 1, I saw in the title that Thomen spoke about D&W. I thought "now that's interesting". Also in this interview I got the answer to my question: what Thomen thought about A Night at the Opera.

I agree with thomen.Blind Guardian used to be my favourite band. I saw them live a lot in the 90s.with nightfall she were not that interesting for me anymore.I saw them live again in 2017.it was horrible. They don't get to the point anymore.too complicated. I undertand his points but I respecfully disagree. There's very little of what you can do in one style when you made a perfect album like Nightfall or the more heavy side of them with Imaginations.Those 2 albums are power metal perfected. I think the band lacks energy lately and maybe is the age or Charlie's production is so lifeless that makes the albums very boring sounding because the compositions are still strong.
@RockstarWizardess
@RockstarWizardess 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree on the energy. I think it's present on all albums, though expressed differently. And what I love about BG is that the albums differ, but the identity and spirit remains on all of them.
@drzitbag06
@drzitbag06 3 жыл бұрын
not about production. the production is as good as it gets. it is about writing. when you want to put so many things into a track you gotta make sacrifice on other ends sonically. you want to add so many vocal harmonies and lead guitar counterpoints...fine, no more fat guitar sounds and crushing drums. that simple. metal records or generally records do not work the way you think.

So basically Thomen wanted to stay the same, while the other wanted to grow as musicians. They're better with Frederik anyway.
@sauliruottu5871
@sauliruottu5871 2 жыл бұрын
Thomen is far superior with his drum arrangements compared to Frederik. While Frederik is good, it could be anyone playing for BGs albums after Thomen left. The same thing happened with Helloween when Kusch left.
@gibsonlespaul796
@gibsonlespaul796 2 жыл бұрын
@@sauliruottu5871 I disagree. I find Frederik 10x more powerful than Thomen could ever dream of being, and I also like his take on Thomen's parts. Frederik's drumming on Script For My Requiem kills what Thomen originally layed down for example. I love Uli Kusch too, but I think Mikkey Dee's performance on Rabbit Don't Come Easy is the best drumming to appear on any Helloween album, but he was only a session player. The drummers they've had since aren't near the level of Kusch or Dee.

@@gibsonlespaul796 Wow. I just saw Blind Guardian live again last night for their Somewhere Far Beyond anniversary tour. The show was amazing, but it blows my mind that anyone would say Frederik is more powerful than Thomen. I respect Frederik, but my NUMBER ONE problem with him is that I think he lacks the power and punch Thomen had. Just listen to Born in a Mourning Hall, for example (the last BG I listened to today). Thomen's sound was HUGE. And his drumming arrangements and rudiments are better than Frederik's in my opinion. But there you go, we're all different and we all perceive art in our own individual way.

bg today is not bg. not since a night at the opera. thomen is not opposing making better music he is opposing going soft. bg went soft. as a bg fanI don't even listen to bg albums that came after opera.
@RockstarWizardess
@RockstarWizardess 3 жыл бұрын
It was Nightwish that went soft, not Blind Guardian. I heavily dislike the last two NW albums, because they became too mild and plain. BG on the other hand, still do killer songs. Yeah, Beyond the Red Mirror is a mess in many ways and Legacy of the Dark Lands is quite ambitious project, however, neither of these albums are soft. Both have their strengths and the ability to slap.

With a better singer, old school Blind Guardian could have ruled the world. Instead Hansi put down the bass to become a cringy performer and mediocre vocalist. It all went downhill from there.

Hansi may not be the best showman in metal (that might be Andi Deris), but it blows my mind that anyone would call him a mediocre vocalist. His singing is absolutely amazing and was top-notch at the show last night. Few singers can transmit the level of emotion he does (Roy Khan, Michael Kiske and Rob Halford are the only ones that come to mind right now).
