In the comic run this is based on we NEVER see Gorr kill anyone, lol. I think... maybe the last temporal god is the only time we see him kill one. Volstagg was strung up for a oneshot, but alive. His planet's golden god I think he killed with a rock... Its almost always a dying god or a dead god that pops up. Gorr was a boogieman in this comic. But, hurr durr, the film isn't serviced at all by watching Gorr butcher random people on screen when we've seen he's killed dozens of gods, even the Asgardians are complaining how he's killed multiple of their soldiers in his attack.

@@nm2358 tf do you mean we never see him killing anyone in the comics. We see him kill a god right when he gets the necrosword. It reminded me of The Black Phone where Ethan Hawke doesn’t have that much screen time as the Grabber but there when he’s onscreen he’s done perfectly and every scene he’s in has a purpose. In Thor Gorr is constantly referred to as The God Butcher and he does no God butcher and no the opening doesn’t count because that’s his first kill and it’s mostly offscreen and every other kill is offscreen entirely. Not saying they needed a violent scene of Gorr decimating a god BUT they should have had a god of war type scene of Gorr killing that giant Titan god. Would have been epic and threatening.

I think Waititi is on the record as saying he did this movie because Akira fell through, which you can feel in this Thor; its like he had nothing better to do so he threw together a story passionlessly. What Waititi had with Ragnarok was a gift; it could only be better than the previous movie. If anything he should have made this film more serious to contrast against the Ragnarok. Focus on Gorr and Jane's darker stories, surprise people with genuine intensity and stakes. But he chose to go the opposite way... this movie is like if Monty Python and the cast of 2005 SNL got together and made a Thor film. Nothing matters, scenes dont run together. But that's what people wanted right?? Pure Waititi. Cant wait for his take on Star Wars

Right? I would have preferred if they kept his Thunderstrike look (the other 90's look) from the beginning of the movie rather than that rainbow of puke costume. Thor was truly character assassinated in this movie. Hemsworth (despite being a phenomenal actor and able to pull off Thor perfectly) and Waititi in this movie made him a bumbling, insufferable, walking catastrophe, a total screw up who visibly annoys everyone from The Guardians to the Asgardian children to Valkryie. He's a walking, absent minded joke machine in this movie and it's baffling that they could have the potential to have him be so cool and badass and threatening but spend the entire movie making him a weirdo, unfunny loser of a 'God' instead.

I feel like a lot of people that hate Thor: The Dark World and say it's the worst Thor movie probably haven't rewatched it. It had a great balance in tones as well as pretty good development for Thor in terms of his progression from the first movie. He felt more humble, selfless, caring, capable, clever, intelligent, strategic, etc. He felt like his was someone who was worthy of Mjolnir. Him saying, "I'd rather be a good man than a great king." to me shows how far he's come and proves that he is a great hero. For me, that's my favorite version of Thor in the MCU. Sure most of Thor's supporting cast don't really do much of anything, but in terms of tone and character development for Thor and even Loki, it's pretty damn good.

19:54 My thoughts on this are that Mjolnir was protecting Jane in the sense that she was going to die regardless, and by draining her power and dying in battle rather than on the hospital bed, she earns her place in Valhalla (I know she technically dies after the battle and there was a running gag that you had to die in the battle to be accepted into Valhalla but whatever). And if anyone's wondering why it calls to her in the first place, it does so for 2 reasons that are established in the movie. 1- Because while they were dating, Thor accidentally does some spell when he asks Mjolnir to protect her, and 2- Because she helped make him worthy in Thor 1 and therefore implies she is worthy.

You sure you don't want to take longer and really do a couple more drafts, and perfect it? That's kind of a red flag. Seems like you could be setting the movie up for a thin and hollow plot.' But I tried being optimistic after a little bit. I loved Ragnarok, so I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Sounds like most reviews agree that it was the exact problem. And in the comics she has a more selfless reason to use the hammer. In the comics Thor becomes unworthy and is unable to lift the hammer. But Jane can and the world needs Thor, which is why she does it. In this movie, it almost comes off as if she were doing it for the thrill. A red flag for me was when she explained how she got mjolnir, and she says she thought magic would work. Whereas in the comics, she’s dying specifically because she wants to treat her cancer using science and is adamant about not using magic.

Don’t blame the director Alan Taylor of Thor 2, the producers weren’t happy in post production and reshot and changed a lot of the movie, with joss whedon being brought to reshoot a lot of the scenes and malekith’s 20 min backstory being cut, And the deleted scenes showed more emotional weight of Thor,Odin,Loki and frigg. Alan Taylor claimed the movie was drastically changed to the level of the Snyder cut situation, it would make a bit of sense considering the dumb jokes of Thor 2 with a few good Loki jokes.

Comic Gorr is an incredible villain and the story heavily draws from and plays on his background and psyche. That's why he is so engaging. A few things I didn’t like/things I expected to happen: 1. Why does Thor have to lose someone in literally EVERY movie he’s in? How many times does he need to overcome his trauma? 2. Like you said with the death fake-out, I really thought Jane was going to die and Gorr was going to wish for her to live. This would allow Thor to actually choose LOVE instead of losing yet another person he cares for. 3. The children getting the powers of Thor made literally no sense. “Most of us have never battled anything” But then all of a sudden can fight like Valkyrie. Overall, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. But I was definitely disappointed with it as a whole.

Thor not giving his friends his power all the time makes as much sense as Iron Man not making suits for everyone. 1. Heroes who never lose don't make great stories. 2. I don't know how that would give Thor more of a choice about choosing love. He literally chose to spend his last moment with Jane rather than trying to stop Gorr, and that's the only thing he was able to make a choice about when in that "eternity realm" (or whatever that place is actually called) 3. The power of Thor is a powerful thing. The same can be said about Jane about not knowing how to fight, but I personally think it's an alright use of the "viking space magic" narrative tool. I'm not expecting narrative perfection from superhero stories, and things like that are things I can overlook That's not to say you must overlook that or that there aren't other issues (e.g. my issue with the kids was never having seen them before once, not even Heimdal's son. Or how neither Korg or Valkyrie actually died and seemed to just walk off their deadly injuries)

The silliness of him running to goof off with The Guardians and leaving Kingship to Valkryie the Enslaver rather than finally, after 8 years (2011-2019), taking up the mantle like he has in the comics. That signalled doom for me mate. What a gigantic failure they've done with poor Thor.

I really liked the ending. I thought it was refreshing for the hero to make a plea for peace that wasn't just a warning shot before a fight. Thor and Gorr had both endured tremendous loss but Thor had been able to recover with the love he gained from Jane and friends. Thor understood Gorr's feeling of loss and knew the only thing that could break through to him was a display of love showing Gorr that Thor would choose to spend his final moments with his love. The only thing keeping Gorr from doing the same was the knowledge that his daughter would be alone after he died. I thought it was a pretty powerful plea to Gorr to die with love instead of hate. Saving the world in the MCU is meaningless by now usually resulting in minor character changes and the destruction coming to an end but this one felt like a pretty hefty shift for Thor. Ragnarok is still my favorite MCU but this one was fun and good overall imo.

I agree with the review on the whole; this film felt like a shallow experience. Waititi's sensibility is very irreverent and subversive, which makes sense after the self-serious Thor films that preceded it. But now the character was redeemed by Ragnarok, not because the film was funny, but because he was brought-low by the destruction of his world and image. And the Avengers films that followed used his new underdog status to make us empathise with a fallen god. Except now its all basically back to full on brashness and if anything Waititi's refusal to take the character seriously starts to grate. Can't he give one heroic speech without it being undercut? Why is Sif a cartoon character now?? How can you call a character God-butcher but show nothing that he does?? And the Ragnarok play with Damon... its re-doing the same joke as the last film. When your movie is a parody of a parody of Thor does anything that happens matter?!

I wasn't expecting people to be so down on the film, but at the same time I was curious at introducing female Thor into the MCU cannon. The comics with female Thor were quite odd, and as I recall they weren't massively well received. In your spoiler section, I was unsurprised to hear your confusion about the mjolnir cancer. That was the comics way of getting rid of the female Thor guff, and it was just another example of the bizarre writing from those comics. At the same time though I assumed they would re-write everything (including the Mjolnir cancer stuff) from the story line for the MCU precisely because of the poor writing. Definitely seems as though they've chopped and changed with a bunch of stories. Disappointing that it didn't better click together.

CONTAINS SPOILER: I must say I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit, and interpreted some things differently, like the kidnapping of the children may not be a point of reference to us but to Gorr. Who now tortures gods with his own pain and sets a trap for them, knowing how far parents are willing to go to protect their children. Who in the end entrusts "his own child" to Thor because he has seen he is not like the god of his planet. In the scene where he talks to his daughter before his death, you can see the reflection of eternity in the water, the fact that only the first one can make a wish and the graphic representation of her powers makes us think that it is not Gorr's child but eternity in the form of his daughter, which would make her one of the most powerful beings. And I would be very interested in the adventures of Thor and Eternity how to beat up Galactus (maybe).

My thought on the comedy is that in Ragnarok, beyond the directorial choice, in-universe Thor’s new silly airhead humour persona was to cover his pain of loss. Then in Endgame we saw even that broken down. So if Waititi wanted to do his subversion theme and comedy, I really think we should have seen Thor re-taking his silly persona and Jane playing it straight and we seeing how that wall of humour was what drove them apart. And of course we could see him once again putting it aside when it was time to be hero, as he did in Ragnarok. Either way, his comedy persona should have meant something to his arc and explained why he basically reversed psychologically after we last saw him feeling resolution and whole at the end of Endgame.

A few things I didn't like... 1. It leaned in way too much on comedy. The third Thor felt like it sometimes went a bit too far but overall was the best Thor film we've seen so far and while the third Thor sometimes crossed the line undercutting important moments with jokes, the 4th one constantly under cut everything with jokes. Not only that but a lot of the jokes in it fell flat for me. 2. Things not being explained properly or things conveniently being there even though it didn't make sense. The reasoning for why Jane could now lift the hammer was pretty bad and I was expecting much deeper then Thor randomly whispering to it to protect her one time. The kids getting Thors powers didn't make sense and was used just to move the movie along and to have a cool action scene. The fact that there's a center of the universe that grants you ANY whish just doesn't make sense I'm not buying it. That could have been helpful in previous movies and it basically acts like all of the 6 infinity stones combined but it had no build up. Another thing is after seeing this movie I was really hoping the way gods work in the MCU would become very clear but I'm still confused. 3. The Guardians of the Galaxy. I wasn't expecting them to have a huge roll since I know it isn't there movie but they were advertised a lot in the trailers and were only there for a few minutes. It feels like most the things they said in the movie were in the trailer. it's almost like false adverting since they were implying that we would get to see them in more scenes. 4. Something about the pacing was just off and felt rushed. Nothing more to say about that. 5. This ones not as deep and important as the other things but just something that I find really annoying is when everyone gets superpowers. If everyone gets superpowers, it makes the powers seem less special and unique since everyone has them. That's why I don't like the plot of jane becoming Thor. If it was just this movie, I'd let it slide, but there are female alternatives to every superhero from the first Avenger movie, which is just lazy. There's a lady Thor, a She-Hulk, a female Hawkeye, Iron Heart, and we even saw a female Captain America in Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness. This movie frustrated me because I was expecting it to be great, to be better then Thor 3, but it was just alright.

Had potential to plant the seed of the plot. Maybe thor losing his eye again and wearing that patch and then seeing his reflection to see himself as odin. Or something to make thor question what his father made of him. So when they give the kid to thor he can understand what being a father is. 2. At some point I though the hammer was going to split while defending the kids, then the kids will try to help the the hammer will find them worthy and we'll have a bunch of mini thors helping him or Jane. (Spoilers.ahead...something like that happened but it was not as rewarding coz it was not his weapon) 3.The hammer draining Jane could have been handled differently. Cancer is a disease in which some of the body's cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. In the comics it’s explained when Jane is ‘de-powered’ after a being imbued with Mjölnir, she is technically “restored” because Mjölnir is restoring those cancerous cells, which are seen as a natural part of her, while destroying the chemo, which is seen as a foreign poison. It is not able to differentiate. The film is using the same logic, just doesn’t hand hold the viewer by having a character explicitly state this, rather they simplify it to, “the Hammer is killing Jane.” P.S.: Also, the film does state that the chemo treatment is not helping her; because sadly the reality is even with treatment - cancer can kill you.

It’s very much just a movie, I though bale had some cool scenes with good acting, nothing surprising from him, but like they did the thing they always do and killed him off, the mcu has such an issue with actually keeping villains around, and that leaves us in the situation now where the only villain they can reuse is abomination and zemo. The comedy was different from the mcu, similar to ragnarok but felt a bit more random to feel random. And I just realised that gorr killed 2 gods on screen, and one we didn’t even see him kill, for someone titled the God butcher it would’ve been nice to actually see him kill one that wasn’t partying. Marvel needs to take a few steps back and get that interconnectivity back, having the guardians show up in this doesn’t feel like anything but something they had to do because of the end of endgame. It was nice to see Thor have the single adopted dad vibe, hope they keep it.

I have to assume that gender just isn't a thing with Kronans (which makes sense since they don't procreate by having sexual intercourse), and they just go with whatever to help their friends adapt. There could be other explanations for why Korg has two dads and a mum (with a boyfriend he hates), but with the "holding hands over a lava pool" thing, this makes the most sense to me.

I thought CG helmets were going to be more of a thing in the film, but Thor wears it once, and his costume, which is admittedly goddy as all heck, is just in direct response to Jane taking his look, so he just over-does his normal armor just to be flashy. Honestly, I loved this movie. The first act feels rushed as its throwing Thor into this situation, but nonetheless, when he's using the Thorforce to empower everyone or opting to choose Jane over death, or being the god Gorr needed, ooph. Love, love, love it all.

Even if they just showed us the fight with Sif. Thor cares about this Ice Giant, so it's death is significant. It also gives her a fitting reintroduction as a skilled warrior of Asgard, and explores how Gorr isn't a giant maniac killing everyone by showing why killing Sif was of no interest to him.

It’s weird how two people can come away from the same movie with two completely different viewpoints. - I think the odd effects added a sense of style like Sam Raimi’s cheesy horror. I really like it. - This felt completely like a Taika film to me. The humor landed more often than not. That play scene was even more Taika than the play scene in Ragnarok. The randomness of Thor riding Stormbreaker and doing the splits was so Taika and I loved it so much! - I also thought the movie was beautiful to look at. - I think the scene of him giving the children the power of Thor was delivered with such umph, it gave me chills. It also innovated a line and made Thor sound like an Allfather. - The imagery of Eternity, Gorr and his shadows, the Yggdrasil tree shaped lightning pattern seen when he passes the power of Thor to the children. - The theme of love and not wanting to lose Jane again felt consistent. - The narration by Korg was pleasing, like a rom-com- giving Marriage Story vibes - The beginning looked stylistically pleasing to me and I thought that was the perfect opening - It’s ability to shift tone was half and half; there were some great moments with the shadow realm and Gorr as a scary being was great but there were some moments like Korg’s “death” that created a sense of security with the things we love- like the children will never die and Valkyrie will never die. - The ending note of how they go off to bring peace to the galaxy, one called Love and the other Thunder was so gut-wrenching, I cried. - I think this was definitely around Ragnarok lvl; this one just improved on every stylistic and worldbuilding aspect of Thor: Ragnarok. - I do think the pacing was it’s biggest flaw, but also it’s exploration in Gorr’s actual butchering was lacking a lot compared to the comics. I do also think it’s worldbuilding could’ve expanded to the pantheons a bit more- like Bastet. It also lacked in work and reward when it came to the shadow realm or the center of the universe where Eternity lies. The whole idea of using Stormbreaker as the key was cool. Zeus’s lightning bolt being used was cool, though I agree, it should’ve been given a much more grandiose power that truly separates it from Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. I was never a fan of the first Thor film and I always enjoyed the worldbuilding and exploration potential that the Thor stories had, that’s why I often revisit Thor: The Dark World. I prefer atmospheric legend like storytelling and coloration like Thor: TDW or beautiful magnitude and imagery of Thor: L&T than… New Mexico- or that dark monochromatic realm of the Frost Giants.

It was time to make Thor question is life in terms of being a god, bringing back his failure with thanos but ultimately showing he’s forgiving himself and gets even more hope with the new mighty Thor who’s been risking her life to protect earth. Giving a new sense to what being a god means. Gorr should’ve injured badly Zeus and after he learns that Thor finally forgave him and took her daughter to protect her, that way the post credit scene still makes sense. This would’ve 100 times better than what they did.

The biggest flaw with this movie is Gorr's plan to kidnap kids so thor will come rescue them so he can steal Stormbreaker Because his entire plan banks on his philosophy being wrong, he believes that the gods don't care for their people and yet he thinks thor will come and rescue the kids Gorr believes he doesn't care about

One of my favourite videos on your channel is the one about Doctor Who's Heaven Sent. Actually took me a while to figure out why I loved your Doctor Who series. It's the same reason I love channels like Nerd Writer and Every Frame A Painting: While it's relatively easy to shit on a bad movie, not many reviewers can explain why a story was really good. You do that really well. It's simply delightful listening to someone so enthused explain why a story I really loved was even better than I realized. Makes me want to re-experience it all over again. It's possibly why reaction videos are exploding all over KZbin. This may be why you're getting the feedback about being negative. Perhaps people just enjoy watching you talk about what you love rather than what you hate. You clearly do as well. You're uniquely good at pointing out what makes a piece of entertainment so great. Maybe not as good at explaining why they're not. You don't really have to talk about every movie or TV show that comes out. You can do more about content you actually enjoyed and want people to watch. Speaking of movies I enjoyed and would love to hear your take on, have you seen Everything Everywhere All At Once? Do that one.

I think the problem stems from the fact Thor hasn’t been taken remotely seriously since The Dark World was so badly received, his character has been on a downward trend since. They don’t know if he’s the butch macho guy or the funny haha he hit a window guy, and then tried to make him both and it’s really not working. Which means even what should be a serious and character driven movie isn’t that because we don’t know what his character even is anymore. ESPECIALLY if you’re going to retread old ground with Jane Foster, out of nowhere for seemingly no reason other than to write her out of the MCU on screen and not leave it up to a throwaway line in whatever movie Thor mentioned she left. IDK, the movie was fun to watch. Too much gold, but fun.

Thor showed such promise as a character and this movie looked to capitalise on it, and yet, it just didn't? Gorr gave the movie SO MUCH to work with but it was all squandered. So many questionable decisions Also, what the fuck is with society's perception of sexual assault/harassment that we can have a man restrained and his clothes removed without consent and it's played for laughs? Imagine the genders were swapped and the crowd of (now) men are oogling a naked, bound woman? This shits crazy man like wtf

I’m genuinely surprised that everyone hates the costume so much. It is my favourite costume to date. I loved the colours popping and how vibrant it was. I genuinely liked this movie a lot, and bales performance was really good. I also have to wholly disagree with all the comparisons to the dark world. The dark world is dull and drab, and there is (to me) no comparison. I literally can never remember malakeths name unless I’m reminded, I thought Christopher was wasted in that movie, and to say that TTDW looked better than love and thunder is a very big leap. I appreciate that you still continue to make videos despite your growing frustration with big Disney projects, and I can tell you really speak from the heart and just want to enjoy these movies, however. So keep up the good work.
