THORNTON LE DALE - Yorkshire, England. We take a walk through the beautiful Thornton Le Dale in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, situated close to Scarborough just two miles from Pickering and often called the prettiest village in Yorkshire.
It is believed that The Angles, who conquered Yorkshire between AD 500-540, must have given Thornton its name, the countryside was thickly wooded so the name suggests a place surrounded by thorn bushes. The Square is in the centre of the village and here on the village green, you will see the Market Cross and Stocks.
The TV Show Bangers And Cash is based in Thornton Le Dale too! This hit documentary series follows the family-run Mathewsons' classic car auctioneer business
Thornton-Le-Dale is a beautiful, quaint English village and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque in Yorkshire. With its olde worlde charm, scenic surroundings and friendly atmosphere, it is easy to see why the village has been voted the prettiest in Yorkshire on more than one occasion!
Nestled on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors on the A170, Thornton-Le-Dale is the perfect location for a day visit or a holiday and is ideally located as a touring base with quick and easy access to Pickering, Dalby Forest, North York Moors and the coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough. There is a large car park in the centre of the village - two minutes walk to the village centre
Take a leisurely stroll around the village and you will be impressed by the picturesque setting, relaxing atmosphere and the interesting history and architecture. Passing under small stone bridges, Thornton beck meanders throughout the village with the renowned Beck Isle Thatched Cottage situated on the bend. This famous scene is one of the most photographed aspects of the village and is regularly featured on postcards, calendars and jigsaws.
When we tell you that this place is a chocolate box village, we’re really not joking.
Aside from having won a ridiculous number of awards for being Britain’s Prettiest Village, Thornton Le Dale has featured on countless calendars and sweet selection boxes over the years. Quite right, too, we say - it’s gorgeous.
Located in North Yorkshire, about 12 miles from Scarborough, it’s awash with thatched cottages, idyllic gardens and a stream that runs alongside the street. And if it does get you thinking about milk truffles, vanilla creams and other goodies, then you’re in luck; wander along to the Square and you’ll find a shop called the Chocolate Factory, which stocks enough handmade treats to make Willy Wonka jealous.
Don’t worry if you end up over-indulging, though. You’re within the North York Moors National Park, so you could always walk off a few calories with a scenic stroll. The views are pretty spectacular…
