My thorogoods are just like these but with a steel toe I’m a chemical operator at the only Uranium hexafluoride plant in the US. I’ve always worn the wedge heel instead of defined heel boot. After wearing these boots for about 3 weeks I noticed the tongue issue went away after about a week or so these are great boots I love em great if your on your feet all day. Will always love the thorogood brand I’ve still got my first pair and Ive had em for 10 years they need a new sole but I can’t part with em lol great review!

Find a good cobbler and have them replace the sole and clean the leather. Boots will last many many years with proper care.

I've used paracord for boot laces for years, but the laces that come on Thorogood boots (as of Dec 2021) Are pretty excellent. I dont plan on replacing until the break.

Fwiw as a long time Thorogood boot purchaser; If you have contact points under the tounge, I fix that by putting an old sock cut in half and folded around my leg in that area. Little bit of a hassle but worth it for these boots. I don't have the waterproof upland boot yet but I will by this afternoon. And it just happens to be raining cats and dogs outside. Yippee!

I have these boots in 6" I ended up only getting them because thorogood was the only brand that i was able to come across that sold size 14 with a heel. Redwing and danner only have wedge boots, which I'm not found of. There were relatively comfy new. A little stiff in the upper ankle. That crease everyone mentions with the tongue was annoying for a few days then went away. No issues with sweaty soggy socks. Quite impressed. Wish I could try other brands, though from my limited research, only Nick's offers what I'm looking for, at 2x the price.

Yeah I had a pair of JK boots. Similar to Nicks. Super high quality, but for me just too high maintenance. I do lawn/landscaping and my boots stay wet/muddy. I'd do Thorogood's again in a heartbeat!

@@trod7374 These are my first expensive boots. I've had cheap timberlands, comfy, but not work boots. ive had Caterpillar, but I wasnt too impressed. at $100, they worked, but lasted about a year in a commercial plumbing setting (mostly new installs). So far, I very much like the Thorogoods. I'd like to compare them to the other brands as stated, very few offer a size 14 or 15 boot in a traditional heel as I am not a fan of wedge boots so I think im stuck for a while. Nicks does, but at nearly 3x the price, i am currently struggling to justify that price for my purposes. I haven't heard of JK, but i will look into them.

@@philz9835 Yeah unfortunately I've found the sweet spot for boots to be between the $150 to $250 range...leaning towards the later. For what I do I couldnt justify $500+ for boots. Once was enough. Feel for ya though...size 14-15 limits the choices/selections! Good luck man!

Thorogood 1957 steel toe seemed quite oversized to me. I too wear a 10 D in running shoes and a 9.5 D in Salomon GTX boots. These were so long I had to return them for a size 9 EE. Fine now, but quite surprising to me.

Genuinely interested in a pair of these for winter/wet boots. I love my current pair of thorogoods, but they’re unlined. Anyone had these for a while and had the liner actually last?

I have been looking at this boot for a while! I have question: Do those upland thorogood boots make your feet sweat and do they make your feet feel like they cannot breathe in warmer weather. I have a pair of keen waterproof and they are comfortable but I can't wear them in weather 65 degrees or higher. I dont know anything about thorogood xtreme waterproof system? Any discomfort from the xtreme waterproof system in warmer weather?
@trod73744 жыл бұрын
I have a pair of Keen waterproof boots as well. They're steel toe and aren't the most flexible boots so they mostly sit in the closet. These Thorogood boots have been great so far. My feet usually don't sweat to much if at all though. Usually water gets in from all the moisture from the lawns and landscaping I do. These boots thus far have kept the moisture out and my feet dry! Comfort is better than most other boots ive owned...red wing, danner and other thorogood boots seem to need more break in time. These just a few days at most. If i have a complaint its only that they've gotten a little loose after break in so I need to put in a thicker insole in to tighten them back up. Hope this helps Jeremy...if so like and sub!

Great review. Would definitely like to hear your opinion on the Danners. I'm in between these, the Danner elk hunters, and the Danner Grouse. Which would you pick for? Waterproof and longevity is a must.
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
I had the Danner Crag Rat. They were a little snug and I thought they might break in a little more than they did. I learned better to be a little big and add a thicker insole, socks, etc if need be. Can't do to much if they're too tight. Other than that an awesome boot! The Thorogood's were good too. Never had a issue with either no being waterproof as advertised. I will buy Danner again. I feel it's a better finished product. Probably won't go back to Thorogood...quailty control could be better. Of the 3 you're looking at the Danner Grouse would be my choice. Probably lighter than the elk, more breathable and flexible too. I usually order a couple styles and sizes. Try them on side by side, keep 1 and send the others back! Just my thoughts man and I hope this helps! Good luck!

I've found you gotta be careful with the tongues on thorogood boots if you don't make sure they're comfortable when you lace them up the first time they can get wrinkles that are hard to get out. Not impossible to fix but something to note

How would the sole hold up with a lot of shoveling? Like is the sole super soft or on the firmer side
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
I'd say they're a medium compound sole. I think the white wedge sole on Thorogoods other boots are softer, but these aren't as hard as something like a logger sole. As a lawn/landscape guy I did a fair amount of shoveling and had no issues. I think these are a great all around boot and can handle a variety of work conditions.

I'm considering buying the steel toe version. I'm a loader operator and help run a plant at a sand plant. How do you think these would hold up around sand, mud, and climbing around a plant with stairs ladders and slick concrete slabs?
@jamesgarcia86364 жыл бұрын
Also considering the 804 loggers
@trod73744 жыл бұрын
My boots are holding up fine. The waterproof lining hasn't let me down. Feet stay dry. I'm in wooded areas, wet lawns, in and outta truck and lawn trailer quite a bit through my day. I think they'd be fine for the work you do. These have slip resistant soles...it makes a little bit of a difference. That being said they have gotten a little looser all around now that they've broken in even more. I have a pair of loggers on order, different maker, just cause that style runs a little narrower. Depending on who you buy from shipping both ways could be free. I'd order both that you like and keep the ones that feel the best to you...send the others back? That's what I did. Good luck and i hope this helped. Thx for the comment James!

My company just implemented a "defined heel" policy. I currently own a pair of the original Thorogood wedge soles that you compared the 1957 series to. How do you compare the black (defined heel) sole to the wedge sole in comfort? Can you tell the difference... (softer/harder)?
@trod73744 жыл бұрын
I would say these soles are a little softer for sure. The boot is overall more comfortable due to the waterproof liner which adds a thin layer of padding compared to wedge sole which have no lining. The tread on these 1957 is a little more aggressive, not "logger" aggressive though, which I prefer over the wedge sole too. Hope this helps Charles.

First time I've heard of a heel requirement. What industry are you in?
@juicecwp4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffsmith8066 I work in refineries as a pipefitter. A lot of these plants are going to a "Defined heel" policy unless you are an itonworker. Supposedly, a defined heel prevents a person's foot from slipping through a ladder rung, creating a positive stop... bla bla bla.

Considering these for doing my landscaping work. Is there a major difference in comfort between the wedge sole and heel sole boots?
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
Comfort between the 2 styles is similar...no major difference. My wedge soles had a less aggressive tread pattern where as the heeled version had a more tradition lug pattern. This was a big difference to me. I seemed to slip and slide on the wedge sole. In and out of trailers...wet wooden ramps were the worst. Didn't notice that with the heeled boot. I do lawn and landscaping work as well. I'm currently wearing Red Wing Rio Flex boots and really like them. I have a short video on them as well. Hope this helps...
@earthsurfer132 жыл бұрын
I know this is late but I find the wedge soles to slip more in the lawn and landscape area than the step heel.
@Bootnerd32 ай бұрын
Do you like the flyaway 57 with the heal Original 57 waterproof wedge
@trod73742 ай бұрын
Both are fine. The wedge sole has a less aggressive tread pattern where as the Flyway has more of a traditional lug sole. Both have basically the same comfort level. Sole wear is about the same due to the sole compound being almost the same. I prefer the wedge sole just so I'm not tracking any more dirt/mud into the work trailer than necessary.

What’s the difference between the American Heritage style vs the 1957? I would need wedge sole for the roofs but I don’t think the American heritage comes in waterproof but I’m not sure
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what led me to the 1957 style boot...the waterproof feature. They make this boot in a wedge sole, waterproof , with or without steel toe. This is pretty much the only color though. Styles 814-3800 and 801-3800. The waterproof liner works and actually adds some minimal padding for extra comfort compared to the American Heritage. I'm currently in Redwing Rio Flex...similar to this boot. 8", lace up, waterproof, as close to a wedge sole without being one. (minimal heel).Better traction too. Really liking them. Have a video on those as well. Hope this helps.
@samuelzaccaro59083 жыл бұрын
@@trod7374 I just hope the 1957 holds up as well as the American heritage because I’ve had pretty good luck with them. I noticed the stitching on the side of the boot is different between the two boots
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
I understand that dilemma. Tough to leave something you know works to try something else! Hopefully you can get your hands on them and feet in them, so you can see what you think. If you order online check for a company that'll cover the shipping, that'll make returns/exchanges easier. Good luck Samuel. 👍

Would these work good for electrical line work? I do a lot of Climbing poles and a lot of groundwork
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
They'd be fine for ground work. If you're using climbing spikes the sole might flex a little too much. I've never used spikes, so I can't say for sure, but I feel something with a stiffer sole might work a little better for that.

Are they insulated? Or just have waterproof stitching?
@trod73743 жыл бұрын
They have a sewn in liner that's waterproof. I don't know what its called, it's not Gore-Tex or anything, but it works! It does add a little padding to the inside of the boots as well, but I wouldn't say they're insulated.

More like the pinnacle of work boots (at least in my mind..anything over $300 isnt a work boot in my opinion as I wouldnt want to beat up something that expensive) you kinda make it sound like these are just common of the shelf walmart boots lol

QUALITY work boots cost $200-$300 and that is “Run of The Mill” pricing given the QUALITY of the boots. Anything less and you’re getting garbage made in China. These guys are serious about their equipment and taking care of their feet. Especially when you’re on them 10 -12 hours a day
