I feel that the reason I love Home Free so much is because they are about the music and not the “flash.” When a group concentrates on making their performance flashy it becomes about them and not the music. HF always lets the music lead the way. (I hope that makes sense.)

I agree. Home Free is all about the music. No flash or distractions. I would listen to them even without a video as their voices & harmonies are the best in the business. A lot of the other groups now-a-days would die without any visuals. The voices alone would not do it.

🔥💯🔥 I get roasted for this most of the time, but heck, who cares, I'll say it again. To me, Home Free have this amazing warmth and welcoming feel to them. They're humble, they don't feel like they have to prove themselves in the world of Acapella - they already showed the world what they're capable of, and now they just focus on making music that they and their fans enjoy. That maturity has given them the wisdom to realize that all the flash/bang/pomp/pizzazz takes more away from a performance than it adds (most of the time). Then you have Voiceplay, whose members are all very talented and unique, but it's hard to focus on their singing because there's so much unnecessary drama going on. Their arrangements seem to be more about shock value than highlighting what they're capable of. I cringe in almost all of their videos, wishing they could just tone it down a little, be smarter about how they use each member, not repeat the same effects every song, and just focus on doing justice to whatever piece they're doing. In saying that, I don't mean that there's anything wrong with tweaking a song to make your cover unique, but there's a good way and a tacky way, and Voiceplay...well...tacky 9 times out of 10.

Agree 💯. Don't care for VP because of they are too flashy. It's like they feel like they have to be "in your face flashy" to be good, which turns a lot of people off. Home Free just use their God given talent.

I'm late to the comments, only checked them out because you mentioned them in your latest Voctave reaction, but I wanted to add my own and maybe a different perspective than the ones seen here. I just want to clarify first and foremost that I LOVE VoicePlay and I LOVE Home Free, but in totally different ways. When VP announces what song they're doing next, I immediately go watch the original and get excited imagining all the places they could change it. The changes they make are WILDLY creative, to the point that sometimes I (and I know you too, Mortius) prefer parts of the original because I have an attachment to it and sometimes they take their version too far for my taste. They have their hands in EVERY part of the production as well, from arrangement to lighting to costumes/makeup to camera to post production. They do it all themselves. They are flashy, but it's not flash because they're trying to cover anything up or hide anything, they revel in seeing how brightly they can burn and how far they can possibly take their arrangements. I think Geoff said it best in his "how to arrange" video: they're trying to say something new, something the original song didn't. When Home Free announces their next song, I never go look it up, because once I hear the original, I know 80-90% of what to expect from Home Free's version. But it's that last 10% that brings them up to the same level as VoicePlay for me. It's what you commented on, it's the music itself rather than the structure. I don't know music theory, so I couldn't tell you what it is, but Home Free's music feels like a hug. It's comforting and cozy and warm. You can escape into it and stop thinking about the world, and just let the music wash over you. VoicePlay's very rarely does that for me, because it's constantly throwing something new at me to pay attention to. Also, VP's music has never made me cry, but I have and sometimes still do cry over a good half of HF's music. Home Free doesn't try nor need to say something new with their music, they just recreate the original more beautifully, and say the things the original did but with more love and passion and charm. For me, VoicePlay's music is like a fireworks show - big, bold, and breathtaking, and it breaks your brain the first time you watch it, but that first time is always the best and most exciting. Home Free's is like a campfire - warm and comforting, mesmerizing the closer you look, and it keeps you content and cozy and warm for as long as you sit by it.

Beautifully expressed, thanks for putting words to the feelings I get listening to Home Free and Voiceplay. I love them both also, but Home Free dominates my playlist. Keep Home Free coming. Yes, their harmonies are complex and beautiful which is what I love about them. No other aca group sounds like them. They (and I) are all about doing the song and lyrics justice. I find other aca groups are more about the flash, which often takes me right out of the song. I'm not saying one is better in a general way. It's just my preference.

I'm here for whatever makes you happy, honestly. I appreciate your attempt to compare Home Free and VoicePlay while making it clear that neither is better than the other. I really like both groups a lot, and I recently came to the conclusion that our (collective) thumbnail descriptions of both groups (that Home Free is the "Country Group" and VoicePlay is the "Theater Group") aren't accurate, since neither of them stay in any one genre lane for very long. (And that's why I'll always be interested to see what either of them serve up next). But I still wanted to come up with a go-to analogy for what the bands are like, in case anyone new to them asked me to describe/explain the kind of music they do. And I realized that each group's "flavor" (for want of a better word) is best revealed (? is that the word I want? It's what I'm going with) by the quality of their vocal percussion. Adam Rupp's beatboxing is sharp and crystal clear, and Layne Stein's beatboxing is mind-blowingly inventive. Home Free's arrangements and harmonies are like a delicate Faberge egg; VoicePlay's arrangements and harmonies are like a landscape by Vincent Van Gogh. Both are masterpieces that can knock me back in my seat, and say: "Woah!" Neither is better than the other.
@officialmortius Жыл бұрын
I LOVE the way you worded this!
@MuriKakari Жыл бұрын
You are a poet. And I do want to add that you are completely right about the Country/Theater labels, but they are there for a reason, and unfortunately, as much as I love it, your faberge / Van Gogh metaphor is just going to confuse the people who ask "Well, what kind of music is it?" This caught in my head after reading your comment, so please let me thank you for the inspiration. When you go to a Home Free video; it's like going to a concert and their concerts have this absolutely amazing vibe where it feels like you're sitting around that campfire from the Hilbilly Bone video and people are telling stories and singing songs. And it is a country concert. Because you don't go to a country fest at the state fair or packing out a College Arena for the dazzle and the sparkly outfits and the guitar solos- it's fun when they're there, but it's not why you're there. You're there to sing along to every single word. And of course you can't do it as well, as amazing as the folks on the stage (or maybe you can, I don't know your skillz) but you know every single word. When you go to a Voiceplay video, you bought tickets to a musical. And the music's going to be amazing, undoubtedly, but the costumes and the staging and the story, they're as much why you're there as much as part of the performance, part of the whole package as the amazing, incredible music. And you're not singing along, not at the start. By the time the singer gets to the last chorus, your lips are moving and you are singing it over and over again on the way home, but in the theater- this is the first time you've heard it or at least the first time you heard it like this and you are in awe. The Country/Theater labels are there because we love both groups for different reasons and sometimes you're in the mood for the campfire and sometimes you're in the mood for the theatre, but regardless of which one you're going to: it's a labor of love and you love them for it.

You do know that Home Fries just love to watch reactors enjoy HF. And about the time you think there is nothing for you to talk about, they suddenly drop an interesting technique or extraordinary harmony on you. And we are here to watch that 'HF smile' that crops up at least once in every video - some bass drop, some unusual progression, Austin flying, Rob 'gospel'ing, etc. Is it always exciting? no, but it is always lovely music. Nice reaction! Such a great song! Bette Midler did it first in 1971 but I remember Tanya Tucker & Helen Reddy's versions. The guys did a really nice job backing up Brooke Eden on this song. They never take away from a guest vocalist. And how cool did they all look dressed in the western theme. Reminded me of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western movies I used to watch.
@rowaineboyd1536 Жыл бұрын
Several ladies have sung this, but Tanya Tucker made it most popular in the 70s. Good stuff, and Brooke's voice is very similar to Tanya's (and yes, Reba's too). She sounds so great with the guys! This arrangement is pretty spiffy too, shows off the guys while spotlighting Brooke. Nicely done all around. It took me several listens to identify what each was doing (oh darn!), watching their lips to verifying the more subtle ones - staring at Chance, who keeps his mouth small, the ninja baritone that he is. Love their version of this classic song, love the weaving of harmonies, and even loved the mystery - thank you for addressing each (regardless of the amount of your words). You don't really have to say a bunch to appreciate HF with us. I don't follow the other acapella groups - no matter how good some of them are, it's personal preference - but I'd happily join ya on just playing HF's music and sharing the joy :)

The ending is the best…Austin soaring to a D5, Brooke countering with an E5, then Austin says "I see your E 5 Mrs. Eden and I'll raise you a minor 3rd with an incredible soaring trill to F sharp 5, to the G5 before the downward run to the tonic D5! If you listen to Mrs. Eden's downward run as Austin is up in la la land with legit soprano territory, you'll hear that Mrs. Eden ends on the tonic D4 a full octave lower than Austin's D5. Adam swallowed a drum set as a child for sure, but that ending was special. It could be so easy to miss but remove Adam from the ending for sure and it will lose its power. The use of very subtle syncopation really drove the ending home and made it so much more than what was originally written on staff paper. Rob and Chance did an amazing job, and most will miss how much these two gentlemen really pulled this together. You'll really have to pay attention, but both have runs going on in the background that are hidden, but stunning. Without them, there can't be a 6-part harmony and it wouldn't be close to being as full and rich as it was. Tim, my man, holy hell. Simple bass line was never strained whatsoever since most of this bass line is no kidding the same as your natural speak voice. The resonance of your C2's and when it changes key midway through to D major, the D2, really POP in the headphones for sure, though we all know how effortless that is for you. You would think that adding a female could potentially alter the blend. I had a split-second thought of, oh no, this is going to be too much like a Pentatonix sound and that's not what I'm here for. Like I said, split second. Home Free is still gonna Home Free and with the top support of the tenors (especially Austin in this collab), there was no doubt. Austin ends up spending much of his time at or even above Brooke's pitch, which let's be honest here, we all know Austin can do. Brooke's sound was hauntingly beautiful and could almost be confused to the Tanya Tucker sound had such technology existed in the recording studio 50 years ago. I feel Brooke's voice is cleaner and purer with just the near perfect amount of "twang" needed for such an iconic song such as Delta Dawn Such talent from all 6 of them. I’d love another collaboration with Brooke in the future! Especially in the country realm (though we know Home Free can perform just about anything and sound amazing), this group of 5 men can perform with any artist, groups, or whatever. Home Free doesn't do covers, they do upgrades. This is another example where a song was basically dead and buried, they've resurrected it, and now have made it their own. This happens time and time again. Why their page has less than 2 million subscribers across the globe is beyond me. At least we get to hear the amazing!

Home Free is Country A Capella, but so much more! When they record a cover, they normally keep the integrity of the song, but make it their own. They do what they do extremely well, in my opinion. They are not Voice Play, nor PTX, nor Voctave, etc. They stay true to who they are and are uniquely different from any other a capella group. They do step outside the box and give us something extra special at times that we don’t expect. They are my favorite a cappella group of all, and Voice Play is right behind them.

I've been looking forward to Home Free releasing a version of this since they started performing it with the female singers who opened for them, back before Christmas. Brooke was a wonderful choice to record it with - such a lovely voice, and she blends with them so well. Of course Austin had to go higher, though, the only person who gets to sing higher than him is Tim. 🙂 For the record, the only thing I'd be disappointed about is if you stopped covering Home Free - I've missed them on your channel, and there are so many more songs of theirs waiting for you.

I'm so old I remember the 1970s versions by Tanya Tucker & the late Helen Reddy. Home Free & Brooke Eden have revived the song & given it a new life. I love everything about this video - the harmonies, beatboxing, singing, setting are all perfect. There are live versions of this on y/t as well. I have nothing against Voice Play; however, bear in mind that flashes are great in fireworks but they fade quickly.

Home Free is always worth doing!! And approve of your PJ reveal, my fav movie!! I have a full sleeve of the movie on my right arm :)

A subtle thing about Brooke Eden's singing choices is what you're calling flips or something like that. It sounds to me she is doing lots of little mini-breaks. Not big old yodels or big half-yodels, but instead these small ones sprinkled around. Some of them are so tiny they are almost not there, but still don't sound like regular note starts. It adds a lot of interesting variation to the lead part. I bet she studied the part for days planning all the breaks and ornamentations. Something that good is rarely accidental.

I enjoy your HF reactions. In my view you had a lot to say about their rendition of this song. Even if your music theory knowledge isn’t as in depth as a few other reactors, your musical training, love of a cappella, and sometimes quirky spontaneous reactions make your videos fun to watch.

Most of the fun for me in watching reactions is just the enjoyment I see people get from it, not necessarily technical breakdowns.

I love this version of Delta Dawn. She reminds me of Tanya Tucker, the original songer.

Home free and ptx still arrange to duplicate the sound for tours. Voiceplay is doing as many studio segment takes as necessary to get a single amazing studio recording. They both work but different approaches

Keep doing home free reactions. I love that Home Free doesn't mess with classics like Delta Dawn Everyone in the 70's knew this song, 1972 top ten country hit for Tanya Tucker and a 1973 US number one hit for Helen Reddy on billboard charts. This song made 13 year old Tanya Tucker a big country star! Check out her version, Home Free again made a great cover yet respected the old version
