I saw an interview with Juha and he said that he wasn't trying to make anything like Moonflowers because he would hurt himself. After seeing that I knew not to expect Moonflowers part 2. I enjoyed Shining more than I thought I would.

I like this album personally. Its definitely a lighter, more pop structured album, but for me its not a problem. I like the Katatonia vibes on this one. 4/5

I honestly really enjoyed this album. I didn't expect the change at all as I hadn't heard any of the singles, but I loved it. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where they take things next, but I do think in terms of polish and the amount of clean vocals in the music, this is absolutely as far as it should go. Any further and it will most likely turn to shit 🤣 still, I really love it and it's almost certainly going to end up on my year end list

Necrotic Nick- I think I'd probably enjoy it a bit more if it wasn't Swallow the Sun. Definitely a different set of expectations there but at the same time I think this is all well executed. Drastic shifts like this can be hard to digest and I'm gonna jam this one more periodically but honestly if I want to listen to Swallow the Sun there's a better chance I'd grab almost any one of their older albums over this one. I'm not a fan of the very sterile production especially on the drums so hopefully it doesn't much more polished than this. While it's not necessarily for me I think it'll definitely find it's fans. I'm glad you dug it, man!

I love Swallow the Sun, I’ve always been a fan of their melancholic style of doom metal. Albums such as New Moon, Emerald Forest and the Black Bird, Songs from the North I II & III, and When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light are some of my favorite modern doom metal releases. Moonflowers was decent but this new album was the first time I’ve been disappointed with Swallow the Sun. There wasn’t enough great riffs like their was on previous STS albums and it was all over the place musically and wasn’t focused. There was still the melancholy, but there wasn’t enough doomy riffs to balance everything out, leaving this album to be a forgettable bore of an album.
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Same here. This is one of the bands I think of when it comes down to melodic deathdoom honestly since they do it so well. This is quite the change in direction though and while I think it's well executed for what it is, it's definitely not what I wanted.

Enjoyed the review as always, in hindsight, the singles were a bit of a give away where this album was heading, i agree totally as far as the production and polish, this does not make it bad. I would be very interested to see how these songs fit into a setlist.
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Honestly, I didn't get a chance to jam the singles but I didn't think it'd be like this. I figured it was a safe bet that they'd follow up Moonflowers with another banger. Again, I don't think any of this is bad but it's not what I really wanted out of this band. I am curious how this will fit into their live sets since it's so drastically different. Hopefully they don't pull an Opeth around Heritage and essentially just abandon the older material in favor on the new direction.

I was watching a video from thrashmaniac back in March where he was responding to this female metal KZbinr named Kaiya. The video was called "albums to listen to depending on your mood". During the response, Levi brought up Swallow the Sun's seventh album, When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light, which is easily the band's darkest album, based on real tragedy as Juha Raivio, the guitarist and principal songwriter, lost his longtime girlfriend, Aleah Stanbridge of Trees of Eternity [who had also created the artwork and did the photo shoots for Swallow the Sun's largest album Songs from the North I, II and III], to cancer.

I got into Swallow the Sun with their album Hope, much like Jon did. Their last 3 albums were quite good and gives off their melancholic vibe well. But this one...yeah, I agree with a lot of what you said. I get that they don't want to be depressed anymore, but Shining didn't really hit me the same way and I'm disappointed with it. Too bright and some of the stuff is too poppy for me. The production is far too sterilised. It's not as impactful overall as their last few. I'll concede and agree with you that the vocals are still really good and his range is great. Can do cleans and growls as good as anyone else. Just wish the music surrounding them was better, haha. I'll be skipping this one and will continue to listen to their older material.
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I get that depression is a bitch to get through and I can imagine playing music themed around that can be as tough as it can be cathartic. At the same time the lyrical themes still feel very somber but the music really seems to contrast that this time. I don't think it's bad but it almost feels like a different band this time. The sterile production really doesn't help either. I don't know, maybe it'll grow on me over time but for right now it feels like a really good side project idea that shouldn't have been under the Swallow the Sun banner.

I cannot begrudge a band for making a different album or changing direction entirely. But, you know. Mikko Kotamäki's growls were the first I enjoyed and didn't just tolerate because I liked the music. There're artists creating upbeat and bright music with darker lyrics. Swallow the Sun could do the opposite. I wish they would make another Ghosts of Loss. I love that album. There's nothing like it.
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- To a degree neither can I but this feels really drastic coming off Moonflowers. Mikko's a solid singer but I really miss the balance of the cleans and deep roars here. It's not a bad album though I just wasn't feeling the direction they chose here.

My thoughts on this album is the same as with the new Unto Others. I don't mind a style change but I think the bands do the melancholic/dark style much better than this bright or upbeat direction they went here. Alcest did it well this year.
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I will say I think Unto Other's shift was a bit smoother than this. While Strength is definitely more metallic than the new one there's still a lot of similar elements and more of their core sound is retained in my opinion. This one honestly feels almost like a completely different at a lot of points. I kinda agree with Jon's notion that this might have been better served as a side project.

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I didn't mind Anathema's shift to a point but drastic shifts like this can often leave fanbases feeling pretty alienated. I can totally get wanting to shift the direct of the band's sound as a way to get away from the depression but at the same time I don't think I'll reach for this as as much as their other albums.

Swallow the Sun is Amazing i love them, but i didnt love this album that much of at all. Its not for the fact that they dared to change their sound its moreso, this doesnt sound like Swallow the Sun. And compared to the last album this is a BIG shift. Whereas i feel like Katatonia did it slowly and naturally with each release
@thrallsofmetal2 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I don't think it's bad but at the same time if I wanted to listen to Swallow the Sun this album would only be on the list because of the name. As Jon brought up, if this was a side project and wasn't under the Swallow the Sun banner I might feel differently but this is such a stark shift from their sound. Yeah, Katatonia took the time to work the new sound in with some transitional albums which might have helped here.
