Considering how colossally terrible "Nightmares Of The Decomposed" was (plus, also, "Torment" & "Graveyard Classics IV" right before) I think anything would have been viewed as a marginal improvement. "Killing For Revenge" isn't post-Taco Bell explosive diarrhea, but its still a load of shit.

Necrotic Nick- Agreed. Barnes could have read a Denny's menu while the band played some of the brighter spots on this one and I would have said it was better than that dogshit tier abomination. At the same time I feel like most of the extra effort that went into this one was wasted simply because Barnes isn't going to get any better. As long as he's in the band it will probably suck.

I've been writing all my life and sometimes I'll whip out my old laptops or phones to see some of the stuff I saved on there. It's really cringy reading some of the dumb shit I used to write, even worse thinking how I used to write it being like "oh my god this is the best fuckin thing ever, i'm literally so good". Even as an angsty hormonal teenager who thought edginess was the soul of wit, at least what I was writing meant something, and could actually be understood in both a literal and metaphorical sense if you read it comprehensively from top to bottom. Which is way more than you can say about how Chris Barnes writes now as a grown ass man. How he can write such dumb shit confounds the everlasting fuck out of me and is honestly really frustrating.

First time on this channel. Great, honest, zero bull-shit SFU review. I must stand with Chris regardless. When I was 17, I bought a Metal Blade Records 20th Anniversary 2CD compilation with SFUs Lycanthropy and Cannibal Corpses’ Skull Full of Maggots. That was my introduction to both bands and Chris Barnes. I’m 45 now. Chris is like the weed smoking big brother I never had. SFU is an extension of Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Death, and Massacre…that’s enough for me. Not long after, I bought Haunted, Alive & Dead (EP), and Warpath from Columbia House. At the time, SFU was everything I was looking for. This furious music was an outlet for my own problems…specifically high school, my asshole bullies and moronic teachers who wouldn’t register a blip on a cat-scan, and my parents who nagged me every waking moment to get a job. I remember how excited I was for Maximum Violence because they covered Iron Maiden’s Wrathchild. Without a doubt, War Is Coming is my favourite SFU song & I really do like their covers of War Machine and Jailbreak. Speaking of covers, when I found myself in university in the Fall of 2001, listening to Graveyard Classics. That album helped get me through a difficult time. I was so over school and hated every minute of my time on campus. Chris gave me something that resembled stability and familiarity. I was an introvert in an extrovert’s world. I genuinely enjoy their covers of TNT, Sweet Leaf, California Uber Alles, Stepping-Stone, Smoke on the Water, Purple Haze, all their AC/DC covers from Vol 2, and I thought the idea of doing an album which consisted of half Maiden, half Judas Priest covers was brilliant! I feel that fans started turning on him after he got in that fight with Seth Putnam. I really don’t know much about it other than A.C.s charming little tune. That, coupled with the fact that time has taken its toll on Chris’ voice. Let’s agree that Nightmares of the Decomposed is bad. Everything about it is ugly. I take solace in knowing that that wasn’t the end of SFU. I like Killing For Revenge, but maybe I’m just easy to please.

Necrotic Nick- Hey! Thanks, man! We're the same age by the way. Some people didn't appreciate the honestly but I hate pandering. I'll always have respect for Barnes' influence and contributions to the evolution of death metal as a whole with his work in Cannibal Corpse but Six Feet Under never lived up to it's potential in my opinion. But that's just me. I know this band has legions of fans that adore them and probably much like you have a strong connection with. The Putnam thing didn't do much for his image but there's been other instances like when he sucker punched Travis Ryan from Cattle Decap and hid in his trailer rather than face him. He seems to enjoy stirring the shit pot but tends to shrink back in the shadows when he gets called out on it. Even as much as I love his work in CC it's hard to defend him sometimes. Hey, I'm glad you dig this one. Regardless of what we say we're definitely not saying to not listen to it, buy it or tell people how much you love it. Take care, man!

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I try to reply to as many comments as I can because I genuinely like talking to our fans. Necrotic Nick- I remember seeing ads for that one in magazines a ton but I wasn't really super impressed with Haunted so I never followed up on any of the other ones. I've heard there are some gems in the discography but honestly, despite some of the music being solid, Barnes' vocals post Cannibal Corpse have been pretty damn rough and I just can't get into them. Necrotic said it. Haunted was an Obituary album but with a different vocalist. I was looking forward for Haunted. I got it the day it came out. The damn thing bored me to sleep. The first song that Six Feet Under released from this album wasn't terrible. I still had my problems with it, the lyrics, the guitar production, the drum and its lack of bass, but the faster tempo and the decent vocal track it wasn't bad. Then I heard other bits from this album. Most notable being the Hair of the Dog cover. How do we still defend Chris Barnes status as a legend? We can't take away what he did with Cannibal. But defending his past is becoming impossible with how terrible his present. I can't just abandon a hero from my teenage years but Chris is really leaving me with no other choice.
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 7 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, Haunted is pretty much every riff that Obituary didn't want from Allen West which, while I love Obituary, Haunted is just a so so album. Know-Nothing didn't do much for me but admittedly Ascension had some solid riffs and some explosivity to it that wasn't found on the last one but yeah, when the rest of it dropped it really wasn't anything special. More energetic musically? Yes, but still painfully generic and Barnes has nothing left in the tank. I'll always love his stuff in Cannibal Corpse. That band was one of the main reasons I became a death metal fan but the time has come for him to hang it up.

I don’t know, Haunted still holds up as do warpath and maximum violence, they kinda were doing something different with death metal I think, adding hard rock influences like carcass and even bits of nu metal on maximum, as the album’s progressed they did go back to the old school death metal sound, With that being said you can deny each of their records have their own vibe and sound completely different than the last, excluding death rituals and 13, those are pretty similar! As far as Barnes vocals over the years? Well he had a different delivery on each cannibal record, The bleeding was probably the record he found his voice, you can almost understand every word on that album, and on haunted the same, haunted is definitely obituary with Barnes singing but his vocal hooks are way more memorable than than anything tardy has done! And the songs are way more memorable to me. Very well written songs as opposed to obituary’s almost made up on the spot vocal passages. That being said Barnes voice today? It sets SFU apart from the rest is all I can say, love it or hate it, I mean deftones without vocals is nu metal but add chinos voice, it made them unique. True Barnes so called damaged voice is a weak statement to say SFU are different than any other death metal band but vocals make or break a band, and it could be the what sets you apart from the rest of the pack, also SFU have done some good and bad covers over the years but I have to say they do death n roll the best!🤘
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 7 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Technically the death n' roll thing was being done by Entombed with Wolverine Blues before Six Feet Under really took a crack at it but vocally I think Barnes peaked in Cannibal Corpse. A lot of that may be due to the fact that being a pioneer of guttural vocals he probably never learned to do those vocals safely and it caused a lot of damage to his vocal cords over the years. I have to disagree with you on Barnes being better than Tardy though. They're not even in the same league and Tardy still has his voice and can perform well live. Barnes has no range to his growl and you can tell he's got very little power behind it now. You can tell he's struggling because he doesn't have much to work with. As for Deftones, I don't think they've written a nu metal album since Around the Fur and while Chino's vocals give them a very recognizable sound I don't think he's the element that keeps them from sounding like a nu metal band these days. Also, he has a much broader wheelhouse than Barnes does vocally so it's not the best comparison. The main point is just because something sounds different doesn't mean it also sounds good. That being said, we all hear music differently and taste is subjective so it's all a matter of opinion here.

@@thrallsofmetal well said, tho I must disagree with Barnes voice peaking in cannibal , True carnage, Unborn and Undead captured some of his lowest growls I think, i think his improper technique helped him in some ways to find his own voice in the genre, as much as I loved tomb and butchered, I really could not imagine those vocals on Warpath or Haunted, improper technique has cost him over the years I have to agree tho, I don’t think Barnes is better than tardy in range, but I think Barnes had better vocal hooks which made many of the early SFU songs memorable tho tardy had some really catchy lines on the back from the dead album, by the light and threatening skies to me are still their most memorable and well written songs, like Barnes Tardy is also instantly recognizable as well🤘

Barnes was a pioneer in terms of guttural vocals but in terms of vocal dynamics Corpsegrinder is better vocalist all around.

As a fan of Six Feet Under, and a fan of Thralls of Metal, I knew I was going to enjoy the review no matter what the verdict was. I have the album, but I really haven't had the chance to really sit down and absorb it yet. If i had to do my own personal ranking, this one might end up pretty high on the list. Yeah, definitely an improvement. At the very least I wasn't offended by how awful it was. Wish I could say the same about the latest Pestilence album. I'm actually a little disappointed there wasn't at least one EEEEEEE. If I were Barnes I probably would have doubled down. 😂 Also - it was actually Jack who wrote the lyrics to Know Nothing Ingrate. I think he wrote all the lyrics on this one but don't quote me on that. For years SFU was basically Barnes' solo project, but now it almost seems more like Jack Owen's solo project.

Either way we're not telling anyone to not listen to it, buy it or enjoy it... even if we thought it sucked... again lol. It does show some improvement but, for me at least, not enough to save it. We skipped the Pestilence album since it was just a bunch of re-recordings of songs they should have left alone. Yeah, I could've stood one EEEEEE on there just for the laughs but I think Jack wanted Barnes to stick with all low vocals on this one. I still find it weird that Jack wrote the lyrics on this since it sounds like it's just Barnes lyrical stuff. The bitching about internet trolls doesn't seem like something Jack would be concerned with as much as Barnes. Maybe Barnes dictated them? I don't know but if Barnes isn't even writing the lyrics or any of the music then what is he actually doing other than destroying his vocal cords yet again?

What’s up, guys! Hope y’all are doing well. While you won’t see a SFU review over at the Chamber, I just wanted to say I’m more disappointed in Jack Owen than Barnes. We all knew what to expect from Barnes, but Jack is way better than this. Think about all the great material he penned for Cannibal and Deicide. BTW, didn’t I read a while back that he joined Empty Throne alongside Mike Smith? I guess that’s not a thing anymore? It’s not like I want Barnes to release shitty albums, but here we are. I think it would be really cool if he released something truly killer, but he’s said too much dumb shit for anyone to really get behind it. Oh well. Take care, fellas!

I think this is more about just giving Barnes something to grumble dumb lyrics over. Yeah, I don't know what happened with the whole Empty Throne thing but I know some of those members are in Suffer with if you haven't checked that out you really should. Honestly, if Barnes still had it... and was less of a dick... I have to say this is definitely the fastest most technical release from them I've ever heard, which isn't saying much but I think Chris was pissed off over the controversial shit talking in the past couple of years and tried his best to sound brutal again on vocals, he's probably really wrecking his vocals at this point, but he doesn't sound as bland as he used to. The band is playing way faster and more aggressive than usual for a 6 feet blunder album, along with decent cover art by Vincent Locke. I can actually listen to this from start to finish as background music until I get to the Nazareth cover at least! It's still not a very good album, but the best thing since 'Haunted' which again, isn't saying much!

Honestly though, there does seem like an effort here to be more energetic and explosive but it's still just kinda bland minus a few tracks. Part of me wants to feel some sympathy for Barnes but he's made his own bed with all the shit he's said and done over the years. The sucker punching of Travis Ryan, his comments on Jasta's death metal panel (which Jasta called him out and Barnes shrank back in the darkness) and just the fact that he can't take any criticism. It's hard for me to feel bad for him when people are dogging him these days. Yeah, it's better but it's still a turd.

This new Six Feet Under album is painfully mediocre. While it is an improvement from Nightmares of the Decomposed, that's not a high bar since that I would consider the worst in SFU's discography. Jack Owen and Ray Suhy seem to have better riffs on this album and Marco Pitruzella and Jeff Hughell have really stepped it up on playing bass and drums but the weak link in this band is always Chris Barnes. He's had so many talented musicians in his band and his lyrics and vocals always hold this band back. I will give this album credit, at least there's no annoying high pitched vocals but his monotone gurgly vocals are still all over this album. The lyrics and song titles are ridiculous and overall this album becomes a bore to listen to and when I listened to it, I just wished it would be over.

Necrotic Nick- It's a ever so slight improvement but over all it doesn't save the album from being dull. I liked that it had more energy but it felt like most of the songs kinda charted the same course or just went nowhere but the thing that really drags this down (and what always does) is Barnes. His vocals are still bad even though it feels like he put a bit more effort into them. Honestly, did we need another album from them? If they hang it up I don't think anyone would blame them at this point.

I give it a 3/5 Musically i like it as there some good thrashy OSDM riffs and even the mid paced songs can still keep your foot tapping But Barnes is still the issue. The lyrics are horrendous and his vocals have improved hy a fraction but at this point are still completely shot They need a huge injection of creativity

Necrotic Nick- Musically it had some bright spots and it's clear that some more effort went into this but it wasn't consistent. The standouts really stand out from the pack because the rest is either dull or just plain bad in my opinion. There was a spark here and there but it didn't really light a fire. Honestly, this band needs to move on from Barnes... which would no longer make it SFU but would that be a bad thing?

Chris barnes is a living meme today. I can recommed some chris barnes Parodys of evil dead or bohemian rhapsody but to be honest. This could also be on a graveyard classic album BUT in the past with cannibal corpse. He was great. I love his vocals on the bleeding. Its sad and funny whats happened to him today.

Necrotic Nick- Agreed. After the last album and his reaction to the reviews and his social media outbursts his meme status, and by that the band's, is inescapable now. I'll always love his contributions to those first 4 Cannibal Corpse albums but the glory days are long behind him and his shitty attitude has made it hard to defend him.

@@thrallsofmetal thats true. If he were humble and admitted that he is no longer the best because of his age, then people would certainly see it differently.

Just from listening to the singles…. The vocals stand out like a sore thumb. It is super distracting how bad they are. Like, is Metal Blade actually making any money from this? Are there enough people who would buy this to offset the expenses of making it? At least your review was entertaining!

Necrotic Nick- I think SFU is one of Metal Blade's highest selling artists still which blows my mind. I don't get it but with any band that's been around for awhile they have their diehards. I'm definitely not one of them as you can tell lol.

Jack’s songwriting has been declining for a while too. His writing is too basic to compete with the big dogs. Steve from Deicide told him they were going to re-write the tunes he prepared for them and Jack quit the band. Listen to his last album with Corpse, the songs he wrote suck compared to what the other guys wrote. He has been becoming a one trick pony for a while now. The Main reason Stench of Redemption sounds as good as it does is because of the lead work. Jack has written some good songs like The Bleeding but overall it’s been pretty lackluster. I won’t even get started on Barnes…

Necrotic Nick- Outside of Till Death do Us Part I still enjoyed his run with Deicide but I'll admit Stench of Redemption was his finest hour with them. I remember the whole part of the Cannibal Corpse documentary about Jack leaving after The Wretched Spawn (which he wrote some bangers on that one like Decency Defiled) but he just wasn't feeling it. Maybe he's kinda lost that drive a bit and SFU is a band that sadly won't challenge him much since he's keeping things as much in Barnes wheelhouse as he can. Who knows but out of ex-Cannibal Corpse guys here Jack still has something left in the tank where Barnes is running on empty as he has for years now.
