Threaded Headset Removal & Installation - Caged Bearing to Sealed Bearing

Changing an old, ugly threaded headset with caged bearings for a much better-looking threaded headset with sealed bearings.
We are working on a Nishiki road bike from the early or perhaps mid 1990s. The goal is to fix it up over time. We start off by removing the brake cables and housing along with the derailleur cables and housing. Then, off with the bar tape leaving the way clear to remove the handlebars followed by the old quill stem.
Removing the old threaded headset is straightforward. Undo the locknut, remove the washer, then the threaded top race. The fork comes cleanly out of the head tube. The fork's caged bearing rests on the crown race. The upper caged bearing can be lifted from inside the cup. Preparing the fork requires removing the crown race with the special crown race puller tool. The way is clear to install the new headset's lighter, more versatile race, then the sealed bearing. Before installing the fork with the new bearing we use the headset cup tool to press the new headset's cups into the top and bottom of the head tube. A little grease in the cups paves the way for the top sealed bearing. The fork can be slipped into place in the head tube. Screwing the new threaded top race onto the the fork's threads holds the fork in position. Snugging the washer into position followed by the locknut completes the procedure. We also install a very stylish new Deda stem rather than re-install the weather-worn original.
