Three Big Gates, Using Salvaged Wood!

In this video I make three large driveway garden gates using reclaimed wood.

One piece of advice: When you try to do use the router on such a thin piece, clamp another piece flush with the first piece to increase the surface area your router rests on. It's much safer and your cut will be cleaner because the router will be more stable.

Nice job! I once tried DIY, I hit my thumb with a hammer, stood in a paint tray, and nearly cut my fingers off with a jigsaw. That was all in a few hours, and that was when I realised it wasn't for me.

A great video once again. One tip I would give is to order an extra fence for the router from their spare parts list, then you can use both fences at the same time, one on either side of the work piece. I know this works on a lot of routers however it is worth checking first that the rods are long enough and if there are holes on both sides of the router base.

Great use of masking tape to illustrate cut locations and direction (5:30). Very effective way to illustrate what you’re explaining.

I ruined a screwdriver I'd had for yeras taking out rusty screws that had been in some fence wood I was salvaging - using a pair of pliers or a vice grip is a good idea. Good video.

Nice one, thanks for sharing the nifty design cutting the braces into the centre rail. Much as I'm enjoying my foray into woodwork, I'm not yet very good at conceptualising joinery, so I find explanations like that really helpful... On another note, I see the battery in your drill lat 12'07" looks suspiciously similar to the dimensions of Parkside's 12V, so I wonder... On another another note, shelled out £140 inc. VAT & delivery for 20 decking boards 140 x 28 x 2400 mm from Wickes (I know, I know) last week. Cheers.

Pinapple shorts! :D But no, I actually have a serious question/discussion point. Perhaps an idea for the podcast. When you say that using salvaged materials made for a substantial saving, I guess you haven´t factored in your time spent salvaging/preparing the materials. If you were to "pay yourself" a decent hourly rate for it. Would it still be a substantial saving? I find that kind of hard to belive, even with timber prices as they are now. Of course some types of material are easier to salvage than others. And don´t get me wrong, I all for the environmental aspect for using salvaged materials. Cheers and thanks for a great video.

Hi Keith Just out of curiosity, I was wondering which wood filler you used to fill the holes. Also, if you had to cut the old gates in half to get them to your workshop, how are you going to get them back to your auntie. Great little project and the gates turned out really good.👍

Great questions. The filler was just a test mixed one, it said exterior and interior on the tub but realistically I'm not sure how well it will hold up, it'll be interesting to find out. It's somewhat protected by the stain so maybe it'll do ok. Luckily my auntie's neighbour was able to pick up the gates, which saved a lot of hassle, couldn't have got them on my roof rack, so hiring a van was going to be the plan but now sorted

Ok. So I'm gonna have to go back and watch this again. Really nice build. Love the use of the decking boards. Which has inspired something else for me.. I cannot find anyone local to make gates. Live in a council house and there were no gates on the driveway. I looked for years and couldn't find anyone. I don't have the money to get someone to do it now but I'd still like some. Ours would be way smaller than the ones you made. Just for a driveway. Yeah definitely churning ideas with those decking boards now. Defo have to go watch again and pay proper attention. Thank you so much. Have you ever made a screen door? That's a project I want to tackle soon. Really soon with this great weather and two kittens who are only getting vaccinated next week! I'm melting!

Depending on nothing getting in the way if you drop the broad at 2:00 flush to the workbench your have loads more reference surface and you can run your router fence against your vice jaws.
