I think almost all of their songs are covers, but they sure knew how to arrange them, make them their own, and turn them into hits. This one was always my favorite.

Three Dog Night sang this song as a part of the very first concert that I ever attended in September, 1969. A live album was made from their performance entitled, "Three Dog Night Captured Live At The Forum." Also performing that night were The Grass Roots and Steppenwolf. And are you ready for this? My ticket price for this concert was $2.50.

This was primarily Cory Wells on lead vocals with a bit of Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton at the beginning. When the song first starts with just the organ Cory sings the first "Eli's coming". Then Danny Hutton comes in with the second "Eli's coming" followed by Chuck Negron's falsetto "Eli's Coming". Chuck then sings "Girl you'd better hide...your heart. Your loving heart. Eli's a coming and the cards say..." Then all three guys sing "A broken heart". After that Cory Wells does all the lead vocals.

This a Gospel-Rock song and it sounds like it, too. It is about staying away from temptation. In the Old Testament, Eli was the high priest at the time Samuel the Judge was born around 1100 BC. Great rendition by Three Dog Night! 🎸😎💖💖💖

Great reaction. It really was like an action movie. You probably know already, but ""Three dog night," an idiom rooted in Australian and Arctic history, describes an exceptionally cold night. The idiom draws from the practice where indigenous peoples of colder regions would sleep with their dogs for warmth; the colder the night, the more dogs were needed."

3 Dog Night was a cover band. They took songs that never charted or from little known writers and turned them into hits. They were very talented. When you hear singing with a little soul in it, that's usually Cory Wells. The only song I know that was a hit that they redid was Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness". Cory does all of the vocals and he did an excellent job with it. Here's a live version that I enjoy. Another reactor said he could see Cory had studied everything about Otis Redding and he nailed it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWWWioqaZrqWgZo
