A great thing about Arch Enemy is that you can get a feel for different growling styles. Alissa White-Gluz who did this performance uses fry screams, their former singer (currently their manager) Angela Gossow does false cord growls. The two styles have different strengths and weaknesses. Check out their song We Will Rise MFVF 2010 to see Angela in action.

Actually, I think the original Nemesis video makes for a pretty good head-to-head comparison: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGqklHpmnNGJq5Y. Alissa White-Gluz she is an amazing vocalist she is one of the best female vocalist. There are a lot of great female screamers! Here's some more bands that have female screamers: ▪Vintersea - Befallen (Avienne Kiuttu) ▪Spiritbox - Blessed Be (Courtney LaPlante) ▪In This Moment - The In-Between (Maria Brink) ▪Infected Rain - Orphan Soul (Lena Scissorhands) ▪Arch Enemy - Ravenous (Angela Gossow) ▪The Agonist - In Vertigo (Vicky Psarakis) I know some of the technical things about screaming(because I am a vocalist and have been for 2yrs now) and it does not hurt at all. It actually kinda feels like humming except you feel little to none vibration under the Adam's apple and there is slightly more pressure in your throat. The technique that she is using is know as "fry screaming" it is were the vocal cords are close to closed and air goes through the slit making a buzzing/static noise and then becomes more distorted because it make the false cords(Also known as the vestibular folds) and the aryteniod cartilage flap around and then it resonate on the soft palate. It took me about a half a year to learn to do it and it is perfectly safe as long as you warm up, stay hydrated, keep your throat relaxed, and don't overwork yourself(When your tired it can be dangerous because then you tend to put more pressure on your throat). There is another technique that is commonly used and it is called "false cord screaming". It is very similar with the only difference being that the vocal cords are open and the false cord and aryteniod cartilage flaps around even more. You can tell difference between them easily because false cord screams sound more breathy, typically have a lower tone, and can't be held for as long(because it uses more air). I am not as familiar with false cord screams as I am with fry screams so there might a difference with the feeling but I'm not sure. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me!

I bought doomsday machine (the album this song is on) the day it came out fifteen years ago. I have to say, when the three of you started singing the "all for one" part of the call and response, I gotta little misty eyed, not gonna lie. loved this. Their previous singer Angela joined the band in 2000, and I'm sure is the inspiration for a ton of female metal singers. Girls who looked to her and said "I want that too," including, almost certainly, Alissa, the band's current singer. And for Alissa's stage presence to be so awe inspiring makes me happy for the state of metal in today's youth, especially women. 🤘🏼
