It’s not a story about a bully and nerd, it’s about becoming a man by not running away from your responsibilities albeit a very violent one. Buddy and Jerry get what they want in the end, buddy gets to live without people fearing him, and Pete gets to live being a legend at school. This scene was the turning point for Jeremy. It took Buddy insulting Jeremy to motivate him so he can realize that you can’t avoid some situations in life. You have to face life no matter how scared you might be. In the end you build character for going through these obstacles that you feel you couldn’t. This movie always spoke to me. Directly. I was bullied harshly by the quarter back of the football team for months. At lunch he threw a milk carton filled with grease and cole slaw at me hitting me in the head. It was enough, simply had enough. I told him to meet me in the hallway and walked outta the lunch room which then also emptied out into the hallway. We fought and I knocked him down with him hitting me a few hard times too. We exchanged punches over a few minutes, about even. Some teachers broke the fight up. I didn't win but didn't lose either but his big time reputation took a hard hit. When his football buddies began to harass me the guys on the wrestling team backed them down. Never had a problem after that.

I wasn't a big guy in high school, but I was just so unaware of my own craziness & stupidity, bullies didn't bother me much. I had moved to a yuppie neighborhood in the 80s and the neighborhood bully, who was my age, was out in front of my parents house picking on a bunch of kids. I walked out in the road to see what was going on. Anyway, while he was pushing around the kids, I had a roll of firecrackers with me. I lit them and casually walked up to the guy and said "hold this for minute." He took the lit firecrackers while he was still yelling at these kids who were now all smiling. Lucky for him, he looked down and soon as he dropped those firecrackers, they all went off. I remember his face becoming red with terror, almost crying. Then he yelled at me said. "Are you crazy??" Then we became best friends and terrorized the adults in the hood. Don't worry, they were mostly rotten crooks. HAHA.

I think Buddy, ultimately, was trying to help Jerry stand up for himself. He could have killed him in the fight, but didn't, gave the money back in the end. He wanted Jerry to respect himself, and in turn, he then respected him. I think if Jerry would have stood up for himself in the bathroom, it would have ended there.
@nathanmcdonald6106 ай бұрын
He would have killed Jerry had it not been for Jerry's friend attacking Buddy right before he delivered the killing blow with brass knuckles. It was only after that bit of help that Jerry had enough time to recompose himself and take the brass knuckles that Buddy dropped.
@ppiorkowski150217 күн бұрын
@nathanmcdonald610 I agree with you TOTALLY!!!! Buddy was a friggin PSYCHOPATH!!! The dude would have completely destroyed Mitchell with his bare hands. The fact that he was going to blast him with brass knuckles is just deranged. He was trying to really put a hurting on Jerry. In fact I always had trouble with the whole brass knuckles addition because Buddy had absolutely no need for them. If this was real Buddy would have either killed or put Mitchell in a coma had he used those. I mean look what he did to Jerry's hired bodyguard in the library. And that was with his bare fist. Not only would he have severely hurt Mitchell but he would have done it in front of a huge audience which he would have went to prison for a long time. A fight is a fight but once a weapon gets thrown into the mix it changes the whole dynamic. Plus some people don't agree with me but Buddy was not a bully. He was just a disturbed individual who wanted to be left alone. That's not a bully. A bully goes out looking for trouble.

The problem with bullies I've dealt with weren't like this movie. I wish I could have fought bullies 1v1. But in real life you had to fight the bully plus 2 or 3 of the guy's friends. Now if you were a scrawny middle school kid, like myself at the time, 1v3's were almost impossible to win. If you didn't win in a fight with the bully they continued to bully you too. Now if it was just me against the bully I would have definitely tried to fight. But I don't get into unfair fights. I don't get into fights that I know I'll lose.

Alright, I’m going to give you advice my own father gave me... Family is important. The tribe should stick together. But when someone comes at you as an enemy, you treat them as one. Might makes right, Bruder. The strong take from the weak. It’s cruel, but a fact of life. The sword is the truth. You be a ‘nice guy’... You don’t fight... You’re going to get bossed and kicked around and never get ahead in this world. My advice to you for when you get into a fight is ‘Don’t Freeze Up’- that’s just the adrenaline. You feel your survival instincts kicking in? That animalistic rage? USE. IT. You’re worried about losing? The moment you think your enemy is invincible, they are. You lose a fight? Heal up and confront them again until you win. If you know a fight is inevitable, you throw the first punch. And don’t bother with drama and talking like they do in movies. And don’t fight fair. You may’ve heard all this before, but I hope you take it to heart. Good luck to you.

Another piece of advice is- talk less, listen more. It’s strangely meditative and you gather more information. Do not wear emotions on the sleeve or smile much either. You don’t want strangers to get too comfortable around you. If you see them on regular basis, gradually warm up to them. Do not steal unless your life depends on it. Do not tell lies. Lying will always hurt you and others. Always. It’s a large part of why our world is so damaged right now. You can withhold information and twist words around, however. Example- such as a buddy’s ex-girlfriend comes to grill you. “Where’s Ron?” (The Caribbean) “He’s gone on a trip.” “Where to?” (Ron told you outright) “I didn’t ask.” “When will he be back?” (2 month) “Sometime in the future.” You did not tell her everything, but you did not lie either. 😉

He didn't challenge Jerry to a fight because he's a bully. He challenged him to a fight because Jerry earned an ass kicking. But Buddy had probably been fighting his whole life and felt that's how it worked. Bigger or smaller, if you are challenged to a fight you fight. hell no. swing on him every chance you get. he may beat your ass, but then swing on him the next day.... sneak him if you have to. Use a weapon if you have to...make him have to look out for you, instead of the other way around. If you give him a good fight, he will respect you. At least back in my day, you probably would become friends.

guy just needed to call 911 and that was it. He was threatened and thats against the law. The Constitution guarantees the right of free speech but recognizes specific limitations when it comes to speech, such as slander and libel. In some situations, speech can even constitute a crime, such as in the case of criminal threats. A criminal threat, sometimes known as the terrorist threat, malicious harassment, or by other terms, occurs when someone threatens to kill or physically harm someone else. So this movie is teaching the wrong way to handle this situation. In fact, if you watch the entire movie, there was even a witness in the bathroom at the moment of the threat. hehe
@Gargarks4 жыл бұрын
And when the witness is too scared to talk, and the cops leave, and the bully returns to continue harassing his victim? The theme here isn't to engage in fist fights at the drop of a hat. It is to face your problems and not run away from them.

Which is pretty much the very thing this scene is preaching against......being a coward. Go ahead...call 9/11....there will be many chances for him to kick his ass....& chances for other bullies as well. There were no cell phones or internet then....you had to ,wait for it,.....handle it yourself
@ghostpatriot23702 жыл бұрын
This only shows why the world needs bullies. You might get beat up a few times or embarrassed but you learn and build character.

@rapbattlefan20087 ай бұрын
This film is a perfect metaphor for life. Buddy is an embodiment of a problem that you simply cannot avoid, which happens a lot in life. Sometimes no matter what you do, you just can’t get out of it, and you should just take your punishment or face your challenge like a man. If you’re rich, you might be able to simply buy yourself out of your problems, but that shows a lack of character. It was only when Buddy calls Jerry a pussy here that Jerry realized he NEEDED to face this. He did and won. Even if Jerry lost the fight in the end, he still probably would’ve garnered respect from Buddy and the rest of the student body. But even excluding that, he would’ve felt better about himself. Even at the end of the fight when Jerry delivers the winning blow, as Buddy is going down, Buddy cracks a little smile and give Jerry a slight nod of approval as if to say “way to go man!”
@nathanmcdonald6106 ай бұрын
I always took Buddy's expression as he's going down as more bewilderment, as if to say "Holy shit, I can't believe you actually beat me??" however I think at the end when Buddy gives Jerry his money back, that ever so slight lightning of his facial expression let's Jerry know that he had won Buddy's respect.
