That "range" control is brilliant on the Poly Octaver (and the OC-5). The Overtone and Tera Echo are 2 seriously under-appreciated modern BOSS effects too.

As much as I am really enjoying my gx 100, nothing beats listening to a great, melodic guitar player like you John. What a complex piece of music you have played here and such a tasteful way to use the gx 100. Cheers!

Wow, all three of these are awesome! Love the slow gear - over tone combo, and the poly octave was perfect for doing the bass and melody parts of I Wish! Now re-listening to the intro track, brilliant!

2 of my favorite effects from my Roland VG-88 that I bought in 2003: Boss’s Slow Gear; the Organ sound. Some things stay great. Thank you, Mr. Cordy, for reviving attention for these lovely effects.

KNEW when I read the thumbnail that you were gonna say Slow Gear! Something that I only could get in my 1998 or so Roland GP-100 rack processor. That is a piece of gear that was way ahead of it's time. Robert Fripp had a pair of them in his stage rig all the way until The Axe FX 3 came out. Devin Townsend too. There are some really unique capabilities in that unit, and from what I am reading (Downloaded the GX-100 manuals) a lot of those if not all are in the GX. The grandaddy Roland (NOT Boss) GP-100 and I am discovering, the Boss GX-100 has never gone the Line6 or Fractal route of really trying to directly model specific amplifiers and cabs, but it covered TONS of Boss stomp boxes and rack effects. You just dialed up a tone in the generic amp category and built it until it simply sounds great. And they did. Back then it shone best when there were lots of effects on, but I think now perhaps the dry amp cab microphone sound is up to par too. I am really hoping to grab a GX next Christmas after bonus time if the economy permits me a decent one :-) Love these videos, love your playing. I wonder, have you ever heard or played through A Roland GP-100?

Thanks for this video. A very usefull and clear video. Thanks to you I noticed the existing posibilities of this product. What a great sounding multi-effect this is. I am impressed. I sold my HX Stomp last week. It's a great tool for making music, but somehow it was missing something. I'm a guitarist, not a keyboardist. And the Helix always makes me feel like a keyboardist. Too digital, too many tricks, too many configurations to get a decent sound. And you really need IRs to get a good guitar sound (otherwise it sounds so digital). So I went back to my simple setup based on separate pedals. I hadn't actually heard of the GX-100 before, but came across it today. After following a few videos I am so impressed with the sound quality of this device that I am going to think about purchasing this GX-100. So now maybe I have to return to the digital realm. What an impressive guitar sound. So pure but full compared to the Helix. And cheaper than the HX Stomp I noticed.

Those are 3 beautiful effects, well designed by Boss. Of course, we have to ask how close can we get to those with our Line 6 Helix gear? I know that Alex Price figured out how to do something similar to the 3rd effect, getting octaves on just the lower bass frequencies. Is there a good POG organ in the Line 6 Helix units?
@johnnathancordy2 жыл бұрын
For the Pog/Organ sound specifically, not really? Maybe you could use something like the 12 string pitch block and a rotary?

Intro reminded me of Tom Quayle and Martin Miller doing Janeck Gwizdala's "Mana." There is some BOSS LEVEL playing in that video.

You are a fantastic guitar player, in control of your sound, dynamics and understand the modelling better than nearly everyone. There is a but, everything sounds like a recording rather than a live sound, I tried the virtual amp experience but found it too overwhelming in that I had too much control over variables you don’t get with real amps. I like the organic experience but love what you do.

@@johnnathancordy checked out and attempted. Pretty cool results! My main issue is that I have to do ALOT to get some upper harmonics into the faux-bass. I wish there was a poly option with low note priority. That would really unlock what I’m looking for. ;-)

My question now is this: Is the GX-100 the top of the line for Boss, or is it still the GT-1000?
@Paralung2 жыл бұрын
The GT1000 is still their flagship. Although it looks dated in comparison (basically due to the screen) it's still more powerful in terms of processing power. Still, the GX100 is a very good device, andd thanks to the improved UI it seems to be convincing more people to get aboard the Boss ship.

I watched quite a few of your videos, and not always by choice. You seem to have a surface and superficial attitude about gear. If it's not expensive or on everyones lips it doesn't really rate with you. BOSS has either developed or perfected many effect categories that more flashy companies that are only around because of their marketing budgets. just imitate.They give it a fancy paint job and pay half a dozen KZbinrs to promote it and call it VHS DUST LOFI SWAG, charge $300 bucks. Reality it's no better than effects Boss came out with 20 years ago. Or better yet the almost monthly KLON clones or "TRANSPARENT" boost that are no better than a OD2 or a BLUES DRIVER. Plus Boss/Roland as a company will be around much longer than these 2 man companies holed in Portland or Seattle in a space that used to be a dry cleaners 😂
