Sleeping in a tent is not the only way of spending the night outdoors. In winter you have a super useful building material to help you be a bit more creative, the snow!
Calle, Sofia and Maiu will try three different setups. Learn about what they like the most with all of them.

About Fjällräven
The Arctic fox is an inquisitive little predator with impressive survival skills that fascinated our founder, Åke Nordin, so much that he named his outdoor company with its Swedish name - Fjällräven. Since 1960, we have created functional, durable and timeless equipment that aim to make any outdoor experience great and nature accessible to all.

One thing that was politely omitted was the need to relieve oneself in the middle of the night. Not that easy in winter. At least there are no bears at this time of year. This is something that is taken for granted always!

When you dig out the quinzee, you could stick some twigs in the “roof” at the same depth from the outside. Then when you reach the tip of each twig from the inside you’ll know you have an even thickness to the wall and to prevent from digging through it. Great video!

At 8:42 Maiu says that if you put too many clothes on when going to sleep, you will be cold. This only happens in these scenarios: 1. You get sweaty, and sweat freezes making you cold 2. The clothes are too tight which reduces blood flow. Otherwise, more clothes are better because they trap the air inside. Great tips here though!

I prefer snow camping to any other kind. There's no problem with siting and orienting the tent for optimal wind or sun exposure and no risk of hitting a root or rock with a stake and having to start all over. There's also no bugs, tree sap or dirt so your tent stays clean.

Nice! Great job capturing winter camping. It is hard to film during the winter, from the cold and darkness. I've tried all 3 methods for winter camping, and now I usually just dig a trench and enjoy the views. Less work that a tent and significantly less work that a quinzee. A reindeer pelt would be great to have winter camping.

Layered clothing works the same inside your sleeping bag as outside. If you're cold you should add layers not remove them.
@MaiuLunekund
@MaiuLunekund 2 жыл бұрын
I would disagree! To some extent you can add warmth but there has to be a way for your body heat to warm up the air inside the sleeping bag. With too many clothes it can't happen and you end up cold even with a warm sleeping bag!
@tupla693
@tupla693 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaiuLunekund How does that make sense? If the body heat cant reach the air inside the sleeping bag you wont be cold to begin with. When people claim that adding more clothes makes you colder in the sleeping bag during winter camping I always ask if adding clothing helps to cool you off during summer camping? Just not how it works. Ok if you put 50 sweaters on so that all the air is squeezed out of the down of your sleeping bag then perhaps you could be colder? Thats not likely the case.

Love the video! I would have needed this a couple days ago sleeping outside in Sweden for the first time and having a rather uncomfortable night 🙈😅 I would love to know what each of them wore and packed for their setups. I have a Singe 48 and felt this was a little too small to pack all the things I would have needed to bring looking at this video. Keep the videos coming, I love to learn from them! :)

Hi Florian! Sorry to hear you had a unpleasant night, here's an other film that might come in handy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHvSaZJvi5JnZ5Y We did a dog sled tour, so space was not a problem with the big dog sleds. Take a look at this film to see what we packed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGaYXnxpfrh8bcU In general, you need a bigger backpack/sled in winter, because of the bulky jackets/insulation layers and bigger sleeping bag etc. We might do a "how to pack for winter adventures", thank you for the inspiration :) Have a nice day! / Lucas

I wonder what Jackets they are wearing. Last week I received my Fjallraven Winter Greenland Jacket, wore it for 4 days and unfortunately biggest disappointment that I had from such an anticipated piece of equipment. The thin snowboarding jacket that I had before feels warmer. G1000 (color black) attracts dirt like a magnet. I just hope I will find a way to return it and get smth else, maybe it is a manufacturing error...

Interesting. I am presuming this was just to demonstrate the possibilities, otherwise in real life the "cave shelter" option would not be that practical, as I couldn't see myself walking around with a regular large shovel/spade I have glimpsed in the video, in the wilderness. I wonder without the regular shovel how long would it take to construct this?
@tomatron64
@tomatron64 2 жыл бұрын
Building the shelter he did here takes a lot of time. But shovels are not the difficult part to bring. If you find an already packed wall of snow, in a hill or the mountains, you save a lot of time by just digging into the side of it to create your cave, as he also mentions.
@KJ6EAD
@KJ6EAD 2 жыл бұрын
Working alone I once built a pile of snow over 7 feet high from a 1 foot layer of new snow using a Lifelink 3DX shovel and shoveling in a big circle to collect enough snow. After waiting for the snow to consolidate, I dug out a cave big enough to easily accommodate 2 adults and their equipment with roof and walls between 1-1½ feet thick. Total working time was only 2 hours. Many expert winter campers prefer snow shelters since they don't have to carry a tent.

i am a professional outdoors-man in Canada. this is very wrong. when sleeping outdoors in a sleeping bag the most important thing is using a reflective "survival blanket" beneath your sleeping pad. that way even using a summer sleeping bag in winter you can survive in -30C weather. the fact that none of the setup in this video use this technique speaks volume for the knowledge of the fallraven team.
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Francois! Indeed, you need to insulate from beneath when sleeping outside in winter. We often recommend a foam mat and on top an inflatable, insulated, sleeping pad. We have a film about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHvSaZJvi5JnZ5Y We usually use this setup on Fjällräven polar, bringing 30 people out in the arctic on a 300km dog sled journey. In this film we wanted to show some different setups that also works, the reindeer hide is a fantastic insulator as well! If the survival blanket works for you, good! Keep at it. Have a nice day! / Lucas

As an experienced winter mountaineer I watched with a critical eye also and although I noticed several things I would have done differently, I consider them non-optimal but workable rather than actually dangerous errors. I agree that a smart combination of reflective and insulative materials is best to reduce weight. When you have a dog sled, snow machine, etc. to carry your gear, you don't have to be so perfect.

Fjallraven, please make pants for people who don't have thin chicken legs...you need to increase men's thigh sizing to what the women's is. I shouldn't have to purchase a size 36 just so it fits my legs, and then get 4 inches taken out of the waist...make real sizes!...not everyone is a vegan who is allergic to weight lifting.
