Get the latest strategies on treating trauma and the brain in the short course "The Neurobiology of Trauma" with Bessel van der Kolk, MD, Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD, Dan Siegel, MD and more: www.nicabm.com/program/brain-...
The treatment of trauma can be some of the most complex work practitioners face. And for years, this challenge was complicated by not having a clear picture of the impact that trauma has on the brain.
But scientific advances within just the past few years have opened the eyes of practitioners to what actually happens in the brain of someone who has experienced trauma. And according to Bessel van der Kolk, MD, there are three major ways that the brain changes in response to trauma.
To hear more from Bessell van der Kolk on how to help patients change their brain after trauma check out our short course "How to Work with the Traumatized Brain" with Bessel van der Kolk, MD: www.nicabm.com/program/trauma...

Thank you NICABM and Bessel for this video. I have a family member who suffered a brain hemorrhage at the age of 34 who had exactly these same symptoms but they were associated with the physical impact of her brain injury and were not understood as trauma. It has become clear to me through this video that these particular symptoms were mainly caused by this very traumatic event and not necessarily by the actual brain injury and that it could be beneficial for patients with brain injury if they could also receive trauma therapy whenever possible.

As a TBI survivor, I agree with you. I was in an auto accident in 1990, and it was 10 years before I could get anyone to understand that I did indeed have a brain injury. It took 10 more years before I could get anyone to understand that it was the trauma that hurt me so badly.

Bessel van der Kolk has written books about trauma (that may be available in your public library), including The Body Keeps the Score. There are extended videos of his talks about this book available on KZbin. This clip ignores the fact that his work centers on the impact of childhood trauma, both emotional and physical. This is also sometimes called complex PTSD, which while similar to the PTSD that arises in veterans or people subjected to a sudden traumatic experience, is not the same. Worth checking out other videos about van der Kolk.

Ctwo First Do his books also mention that Repressed/Recovered Memory Theory and Therapies started the Satanic Panic, resulted in over 15,000 documented (there were more) innocent lives destroyed by false accusations of historical child abuse created in drug and suggestion fueled Recovered Memory Therapies or that mentally I’ll patients were encouraged to live in a state of psychosis due to this therapy and often continued to get worse until they had a break down, spent most of their lives institutionalized or killed themselves? Do that mention the heavy ethical and legal restrictions placed on these therapies declared malpractice and a danger to society? Do his books mention that he has been litigated for malpractice/implanting false memories of abuse, terrorizing patients, has been found guilty of manipulating research and fired from Harvard for all the above plus abusing co workers? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZS8qnuQqNqajcU

@@pollysshore2539 As you ask what his books say, it's evident you haven't read them. He is Dutch, nothing in his career has anything to do with Satanism, neither real nor fake, and the allegations against him caused all the senior members in the Trauma Center to resign in solidarity with him. He sued for defamation and there was a settlement in his favor. I don't know what's the matter with you, but not all the therapists that deal with trauma extract it from "repressed memories." Many people experience very real trauma from abusive parents that lasts well past childhood, there are abusive siblings and spouses, and never forget the realm of war trauma. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bessel_van_der_Kolk

I have a functionally broken brain😢most ppl don't know that the parents' emotional trauma changes their children's biology. Suffering, and my parents had lots of it, triggers changes in gene expression lasting for generations. What a tragedy! That's why so many ppl are fucked up... bc nobody knew or suspected this until fairly recently. I ruined my son's lives the way mine was ruined.

I have had the same experience. A nighttime roadrage incident on an isolated country road at night 2 years ago, turned out to be a massive trigger for previous traumas in me. I've been getting therapy for 5 months now, as was finding it hard to function / cope. I've been reading the book The Body Keeps The Score, and it has been helping me, especially I am blaming myself much less now, and trying not to call myself weak etc. Also, I have been doing TRE (trauma release exercises). That has been helping me. When I get traumatic memories or I try to repress feelings that I normally try to push down, I start shaking. It's a sign that I need to be more accepting of those feelings instead of fighting them. Wishing you well.
