I came across this pair of shoes in an online thriftshop, expecting it to be an easy restoration. I quickly found out I was mistaken! I had to do a complete resurfacing and used the opportunity to work on my dye skills, enjoy!

I did NOT know you could sand leather shoes. Boy, I was trying to scrub it down to the bare leather using only acetone and pressure from a cloth. This changes everything. Thank you.

I just sanded down a torn toe on a Magnanni and despite using 1000 grit sandpaper, the sanding revealed a raised grain. I ended up sealing it up with some Saphir polymer and dyeing, but I am impressed by your smooth sanding results. Did you use different grits and how did you avoid a raised grain popping through. Excellent job!

Pressing and mixing the creams with a palette knife (with decent flexibility) on a flat mixing palette might be a good option for you. Mixing palettes can be bought from art supply or makeup supply stores. A piece of acrylic, glass, etc can also be used as long as it is big enough to allow the mixing process, scraping up or collecting your mix, and/or using your mix.

Very nice restoration and patina work but the museum calf leather John Lobb uses is not painted the same way you do. Real museum calf leather gets it's typical look in the tanning process.

That really was a lot of extra work! Definitly showed through at the end the amount of care and attention put in to it. The "museum Patina" gave them an interestign effect! Whilst these restorations are obviously something you love doing, have there been shoes that you've got hold of that just couldn't be restored, or is it just "surprises" once you start the restortion and therefore still relaxing to do the work on? Another really nice video and still loving the music.

There are often surprises , at the end of the restoration I want the shoes to be perfectly wearable. I've abandoned projects and pass up most shoes at thrift stores due to bad build quality and cheap materials. One of the projects I'm filming now had a surprise and is forcing me to try new things!

I would be interested to know if the conditioner, which also contains wax, is not a barrier to the color. So, if you apply the conditioner, whether then the color can also still be properly absorbed?
@svendoesrestoration7079
@svendoesrestoration7079 3 жыл бұрын
Too some extent, yes, so the conditioner should not nearly saturate the leather.
@fadifreih

I noticed that you sometimes apply dye at later stages, after the cream polish, or even wax polish is applied. Don't the polishes prevent the dye from soaking into the leather? Or is it on purpose that you do that to create the uneven effects?
@svendoesrestoration7079
@svendoesrestoration7079 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I'ts a quick 'n dirty way to dye, with much less control over colour and dye penetration. I used a darker dye over a lighter, so I was pretty confident it would turn out the way I wanted to, especially given the irregular effect of the museum patina. I find darker colour schemes are generally much more forgiving to work with. I'll try my hand at some lighter schemes soon. The more precise and consistent you want to be, the more prep you have to do.

How (as a professional, I assume) would you rate Magnanni on scale from 1 to 10? I am asking because one youtuber rated them like 2-3, but he is not a professional, but his channel is more on fashion side of things. He said that the leather is plasticky to him. I own a pair and I really enjoy it, and I have 15 other pairs of shoes and if I have to be honest, Magnanni are fine shoes even at retail (all of my pairs are good deals on local sites (I live in Bulgaria and we are a ton of second hand/outlet sites) for like 15-25% of the retail price and all but 1 pair is new), I just cant afford the retail price yet. I am just looking for your opinion as someone who has worked on hundreds of pairs. Best regards!
@svendoesrestoration7079
@svendoesrestoration7079 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, I've owned multiple Magnannis over the years. Most have a blake stitch sole construction, which makes them less durable than Goodyear welted shoes. The fake welt is often not made of leather; it tends to crack over time. Leathers are ok-ish, I've had some leather hold up for 8+ years, others started cracking after a few. Be aware that you're paying extra for the fact that they've managed to establish themselves as a "Santoni-light' in the marketplace. The 200-300 euro segment is very competetive, many good options out there. P.S. this is just a crazy hobby of mine, but I've worked on 100's of pairs over the last years.
@xMisterVx
@xMisterVx 2 жыл бұрын
So in your other comment you said these are hi-polish? But they don't seem as plasticky to me, at least not like the "black hi-shine" that I have in mind. The latter is probably not very repairable, right?..
@SvenEugenots
@SvenEugenots 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, I think you probably mean patent leather; that is leather treated with a couple of layers of acrylic coating. When that cracks it looks awful, it also tends to ripple a lot more. Often those cracks can be sanded down or rubbed away with acetone ( dissolves the coating), after which you can aply some dye/cream and polishing. Usually it's possible to make the cracks a lot less noticeable.
@xMisterVx
@xMisterVx 2 жыл бұрын
@@SvenEugenots Yeah I think that's how British manufacturers like to refer to their patent leather?.. OK so acetone won't destroy it completely, good to know. I thought it would dissolve the coating and would just irreversibly damage it.
@SvenEugenots
@SvenEugenots 2 жыл бұрын
@@xMisterVx It does remove the shine so you have toe think about how to deal with that, often patent leather polishes really well beacuse it's so smooth.

Is there any particular reason you apply the conditioner before dying the shoe instead of applying the dye first? All right, let's continue! 👍
@svendoesrestoration7079
@svendoesrestoration7079 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question: Especially after sanding or extensive cleaning the leather is very bare. A coat of conditioner will show me what the colour will look like before dyeing. Some leather don't darken much, others do quite a bit, so I need a good idea of what I'm working.
