I love second when shopping but as a plus sized woman, it’s very hard to find things in my size. Sometimes I find a gem, but because of that I’m a sale shopper when I do buy first hand. Especially at Old Navy. If you get stuff from the clearance section and wait for a 30% off sale you can get great deals. I got some sweaters for 2.75 each brand new. You should never feel bad for not wanting to or not being able to drop hundreds on new clothes. Recycling is better for the earth anyway.

Thrifting is a great way to save money, and find such unique pieces! I always check thrift stores for jeans or a piece of clothing I've been wanting before buying something for full price. I recently found a trench coat - a staple piece I've wanted to add to my wardrobe for forever - and it was $7 instead of the $50-$80 ones I've seen online! I've never understood why people are against secondhand shopping.

Recycling is super important! We in Sweden have both vintage stores and thrift stores but vintage stores are SO MUCH MORE expsensive! I love the idea of thrifting, however I have never found any clothing in my size being plussize. Baga, scarves hats and gloves are what I mostly buy. However when I was studying away from home I bought homeware secondhand (I obviously washed everything very thoroughly before using it). I got it super cheap and I didn't mind having a mismatched kitchen anyway, it actually liked the way it looked.

So funny that you uploaded this when you did because I was at the thrift store just today. Absolutely love them. Best bargain so far was a black 'going out' playsuit for $7 which still had the original tag and price of $90! Some of my favourite and most worn items I got from thrifting. I absolutely adore your style (although mine is completely different) and it makes me happy when others don't only spend money on new clothes. Such a waste sometimes with the fashion industry and all. Wish more people (especially young people) gave charity shops a chance. Great video :)) x

I LOVE charity/thrift/secondhand/garage sale shopping! I grew up on it just like you did. I also love your reasons for thrifting, especially what you said about being in control of your fashion sense and having an eye for pieces less common. For me, keeping up with trends is exhausting and expensive. It's just not my style. I love that secondhand shopping is becoming more common, as it's so important to recycle things that don't have homes. I'm so excited for your upcoming thrift hauls!
@nynkesnature7 жыл бұрын
Some of this is really relatable! I grew up with a lot of second-hand clothing as well, and I never really minded. It's harder to find stuff in second-hand shops, but I like that! I see it as a challenge to find something I like and fit into. Plus, it's so much cheaper. I could buy much more then I could buy first-hand. Also, it's much more sustainable to shop second-hand. As you said, you'll buy stuff you actually love, so you won't throw it away because it's not 'in fashion' anymore or anything. No new clothes are produced for you (or at least less), which means it's better for the environment ánd you're less responsible for the terrible circumstances some clothes are made in (I mean... if I think about the circumstances my clothes are made in I feel terrible). There are so much advantages to second-hand shopping, I love it!

I absolutely love that you have spoken about this. I find it strange why people find it hard to talk about. My husband laughs (jokingly) that each outfit I put on must have cost no more than £5. Most of the time he is right. Even my wedding dress was from Oxfam. To me it’s about recycling and not having a fast throwable fashion Industry. Things need to last. Well done in promoting this!

Getting the notification of a new video of yours is my favorite part of Thursday mornings. And I plan to shop second-hand more often! I usually get a little freaked out by some of the cleanliness of the clothing at thrift shops near me (they're not very pleasant, to be honest...run-down, not well taken care of). But you've definitely inspired me to look past first impressions and find the hidden gems.
@Mybougiehippylife7 жыл бұрын
I agree thrift store shopping is not only fun because you get to be unique but it's great for the budget. I could never afford to have the variety in my wardrobe if I bought all of my clothes brand new either. I grew up thrift store shopping with my Mom and sister for clothing as well. We also got a lot of hand me downs. I remember getting excited to get hand me downs from other people. It's like Christmas. Something new to me was fun and sometimes I do remember being looked down upon for my previously used clothes. But I have to say it made me a better person all the way around. Now as an adult I love the hunt going thrifting. And it's something that comes in handy for my budget and lifestyle of wanting to have a unique clothing style. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Beckie. As always a very informative and fun video. Have a great weekend!

Aww Beckie, I think it's terrible that some people judged you for buying second-hand clothes! I can't wrap my head around that kind of thinking. Funnily enough, I actually get most of my shoes second-hand! I find shoes ridiculously overpriced (even more so than clothes), plus they never seem to last very long. Can't wait to see your thrift hauls! 👗👜

I've been buying stuff second hand for the past year and I've completely changed my wardrobe and style because I bought the stuff I really like at the fraction of the price and I also got to try out some new trends for very cheep. Plus, it's a lot easier to find really good quality items that date back 10 , 30, even 50 years than to find something good now that won't loose it's shape after washing it twice. Really glad you did this video, perhaps you can do a couple of looks just using thrifted items, I'd love to see that! :)

This was such a nice video to see - an honest one about second hand shopping. I grew up going to a store called Value Village where I'm from, where clothes & other items were donated. As I've gotten older, however, it's not a reasonable or better place to shop anymore than regular retail stores - the prices are first hand now, if that makes sense lol. Thank goodness for the 50% off days!

This is such a cool video! I actually haven't encountered people on KZbin talking about thrift shops, but it is very popular the last few years in America. I started out thrifting because I had kind of old-fashioned taste in clothing, but once I started college, it was more that I and all my friends couldn't afford to buy much at brand-new prices, and so we shopped for everything we needed at local thrift stores. Also, I alter a lot of my clothing, rip sleeves off, change buttons, and I feel less guilty doing that when I've only paid $3 for it. I'm glad you're more comfortable with your thrifting now!
@majdeclercq56887 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could do like thrifty outfits and talk about how you combine things... I think that could be really cool! Especially because in thrift stores, you don't get the pre-combined outfits. You've actually got to create your outfits. I personally love trying to recombine my closet and get cool new outfits, so I'd love to hear about your thought process behind it :)

Some of my favorite clothes when I was a kid were hand me downs from my brother or one of my male cousins, or garage sale purchases. I saw a picture of me when I was like 2-3 years old in name brand overalls and I told my mom I was surprised she bought them when I'd grow out of them so fast. She laughed and said she definitely bought those at a garage sale.
@elizabethblack79457 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you about the price of clothing. It didn't make any sense to me to pay 20 dollars on a t shirt. Second hand stores are also great for people like myself that dress a little out of the ordinary. It makes buying things like fake leather jackets much less expensive, and more fun in my opinion. It becomes like a treasure hunt and you can find unique and beautiful things if you know where to look. I also had the same thing with the bags of hand me down clothes, it was always so exciting to get as a kid. Then I would usually hand the clothes down to my younger sister.

My sister and niece are the ultimate charity shoppers. They find all kinds of clothes that still have the tags on them. They can find $100 outfits for $10. It's amazing. I see nothing wrong with it. I don't mind going and seeing what I can find. People have found major treasures in charity shops that ended up being worth thousands of dollars. You never know just what you'll find there. To me charity shops and thrift stores are the same thing since both are secondhand things.

Completely agree! What's the point of going out and spending 20/30 pounds on a top and/or jeans that you don't particular like just for the sake of fitting in! I love going into charity shops, I don't often but clothes but then I wouldn't go into Zara or riverisland and buy their clothes either. I'm 16 and for the past year or so I've hardly bought half a dozen first hand clothing items. Yeah, I'll admit it helps that thrifting is very fashionable at the moment (which is a plus) but I can't see myself going off it when the trend wears off. I feel as though I can finally form cool and unique outfits with 100% second hand. I could write a book talking about my favourite finds, I just want to flaunt it and have people asking me only for me to smugly reply 'oh I got it second hand' in fact I've never been complimented so much. It's not just second hand clothing I accumulate either. It's cute toys and ornaments. Ugh, I could talk about this forever! Maybe I should create videos on my finds?

I love going to thrift shops/Goodwill (chain of stores in america). I've been doing this since I was a child; my dad was a single parent so he has always been one for a bargain. I don't think I was ever ashamed or made to feel ashamed of wearing secondhand clothes. If anything my friends would be annoyed that a cute top/shoes/etc. I was wearing was from Target. The majority of the things I purchase are clothes/books/dvds. I've found many a hardcover/paperback w/ no marks on it for so much cheaper than the reg price. Which usually ranges from $8 to $20; depending on the store; same goes for dvds. Also a lot of the stores near me donate things that get overstocked to the Goodwill so that's a bonus. I dressed up as Joan Jett one yr for Halloween & my entire wardrobe besides the converse was from thrift shops. Finding a bookcase was also my biggest triumph. My dad thinks it would've originally been priced at around $30 but we got it for $15. Beyond shopping I love giving things away to thrift shops; especially old toys or books. The idea of someone else finding joy in something that has been well loved makes me smile a little more. Can't wait for more thrifting vids from you!!!

People don't like buying things second-hand because there is a huge stigma around it. I remember as a kid getting loads of hand-me-downs and feeling very uncomfortable because I was poor and it was a constant reminder of this. I do shop/look in charity shops sometimes but I feel weird walking in and out of them, in case someone sees me and judges. Quite sad really... it's only going to get worse too, as the generations are becoming more and more focused on the "latest" thing. On another note, do you ever find yourself seeing something in a shop that you really love but it's expensive and you struggle to find it elsewhere? Also sometimes buying one expensive thing, if it is good quality, is an investment. :))) x

I don't understand why anyone put down charity shopping, there is literally no downside. It's good for the person doing the shopping because they don't have to spend as much money to get something new for them (I also didn't realize second hand stuff as a kid and mostly wore it. It felt like christmas when I got to wear stuff my sister owned prior to me), it's good for the people running the shop because they get to make money and it's good for the planet because less resources get used up to make new stuff. I'm personally not the biggest thrifter, some for the exact opposite reasons of why you do it. I get easily overwhelmed by the amount of different (and sometimes unorganised) pieces available so highstreet stores are easier to scan through for me and therefore easier to find what I'm looking for. I'm also a sucker for in-style pieces, but because I'm on a budget as well I usually only shop once or twice a year although I could go out everyday and buy new stuff. I'm not good at following my own ethic rules I guess :D To bring this to a close, this video showed me once more why I love your channel so much and why it's so unique to the other mainstream content produced on youtube. Your way of thinking and explaining what you're thinking and feeling and why amazes me. It calms me down and makes me happy, to a degree because I'm familiar with that way of handling situations because I'm similar in that sense. I don't have a proper conclusion so just keep on being you beckie
