Goodwill on steroids! Seattle, Washington's flagship Goodwill is their largest complex anywhere, and at its center is a big retail store full of rows and rows of everything used you'd ever find in a house. We're combing it all for antique and vintage bargains our collectors will love!
Clothes, accessories and jewelry fill the front room, and we give them a look-see while we head to our main destination, the West End hall. This massive space offers sections of collectibles, decor, dinnerware, toys, furniture, linens and bagged items, and bins full of fresh stock are rolling out before our eyes! But will we find any real antiques or cool vintage values that our collectors will want to see?
The answer is yes! While the collectibles aisle is priced as special, we find great deals around the rest of the store...a Blenko twin-spout pitcher, Venetian glass, a cute 1970s cat planter, antique 1910s English barley-twist candlestick holders and an old diner plate come to us at prices as low as $1.99! Bin digs reveal a cute Mexican turtle figure, a maple crucifix, 1950s heavy brass candleholders and more, while the shelves keep populating with Limoges and Spode dinnerware, Fostoria glass, and everything else from Geisha dolls to Dutch shoes!
We make a sweep of vintage electronics, lamps and furniture (the 1950s sideboard is handsome), toys that include a Schroder-sized kid's piano, and then come back down the aisle to discover an Italian glass fish (worth up to $100) for just $12.99! Along the way, we talk about all the vintage goodies we're finding, from Victorian Staffordshire teapots and Toile-inspired plates to painted brass and chrome 1930s cocktail shakers, telling what we buy and don't buy depending on prices, condition and market demand.
We rarely come out of this massive Goodwill empty handed, and today is no exception! Now if we can just get the cart to the car...

I walked up to a family run estate sale Saturday and noticed a pull behind trailer with a 1.00 sign. In one corner there was a pile of silver serving pieces and I noticed some were wrapped in cellophane. My granny wrapped all of her sterling pieces in cellophane. Sure enough they were clearly marked sterling. I was thinking about letting the family know the footed tray, tea pot and little bowl were sterling until I heard some of the family talking about their shock that anyone would buy “mamaws crap”. I gladly paid the asking price of 3.00.

An estate sale run by a pro company advertised Wedgwood and glass, and totally ignored a sterling service for 6 or 12 and some circa 1900 Russian serving pieces. Sold them as plate despite clear sterling marks. Couldn't get it to my car quickly enough.(LOL)

Those are good stories! I feel the same about family sales, if they’re nice and they seem innocent I’d pay them more, but if they have attitude I figure that’s the price they pay

@@TheAntiqueNomad One man's just is another man's treasure. I can't be going to estate sales to find all of the underpriced items so that I can tell them they priced them too cheap and to charge me more. Not my place or business to do that.

Good evening, George. Whoa! There's a ton of stuff in that store! I liked that Staffordshire teapot, and I'm not a teapot collector, unless it's in a set. There are several of the Asian dolls here that were in mom's collection. One of them is really tall. I'm hanging onto those. There was a pitcher there that looked like pewter. It caught my eye. I have an old coffee grinder that I bought at a flea market. I think I might have paid $3.00 or $5.00 for it...years ago. Those covered dishes, for $8.00 each, seemed really cheap, to me. I liked the maple crucifix. Love the English barley twist candleholders! Those are definitely my style. That store would be a great place to spend a week...you'd need it to just stay up with them constantly bringing out carts 🤣 Thanks for the take-along!

I love a good kislux because it helps me decide if I want to buy the real thing or NOT." That part right there. That's IT. I feel like people stigmatize dupes but for me, I pause on large purchases that are trendy or when I feel the overconsumption mania setting in FOR ME. (It's something I struggle with LOL! I'm easily convinced to buy things I don't wear or use. They'll literally have the tags and I'll even forget I bought something and have 2 or 3 of them in my closet.) Love this video!

I don't understant when they don't know better than to price it over retail. On the other hand, they have a huge store here with a staff of dozens of people working at any given time, so I realize they have to charge something to cover expenses and raise some money for what they do. As far as what I buy, I found some things to be too high, yet others were real bargains...the $12.99 fish sold for $85 plus shipping, for example...

"Ragged off" cart is most likely their expired tagged items. Some thrift stores call that process ragging. We called it pulling.

Is the merchandise GW receives in that store , all local donations ? Or is it brought in from outside the area ? It seemed endless with all the carts they kept bringing out , You found some nice items . The Blenko was a great find . Good way around the cart locking up . Most grocery stores here do that .

They are the flagship for the Puget Sound area Goodwills, so I think they just get a lot of donations

I live close to the Mexico border. I always go for kislux , their quality is great. Some of them are made with leather and really hard to tell the difference from real or not. Either way, it’s your choice. No judgement from me

Rag-off to me means rag-out. Score on the Blenko! I found a cobalt one at a tag sale a few weeks ago, one of three or so that existed. BIG crack. Left it. Darnitt. Glad George's was in good shape.

Do you think Silver Plate older items will ever be worth anything ? Please and thank you.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 11 күн бұрын
I do, it will depend on quality and maker, some are worth something now. On the other hand, a lot was made that is common and not so special. That's true of about any collecting category. I am noticing younger people buying it again and using it on walls as displays!

Syracuse China and Onondage Pottery was the largest supplier of institutional ceramic tableware to railroads, hotels, restaurants, ocean liners, hospitals, schools, private clubs, industrial cafeteria, etc. Unlike other "diner china" specialist china companies, Syracuse made a significant amount of super fine high quality translucent porcelain for the domestic market, sold exclusively by finer department stores. Buffalo China, however, was prolific but never made a domestic line and it's wares were never sold in stores.

I just interviewed at GW in NH and found out that their "Hand Picked" has a minimum price of $15. I also found out that they are sourcing prices through eBay Sold prices and have adjusted to a bit below that.

Interesting, they do it a little differently everywhere. Got a collector, those are fair prices, and they’ll drop if they don’t sell after awhile
