My mommy used to give me new/like new care (packages) arranged in a basket and tied up with new dish towel/dish clothes. Things she knew I'd like. I loved those. I miss getting those. She was great at shopping/thrifting. I'd give anything for one more day, one more visit, one more basket of perfectly curated thrifted items from her. I love you forever mommy!

I grew up in a household that thrifts so I love the hunt for those unique gifts. Best gift that was thrifted though was a set of vintage books. I still have those books and I treasure them.

Two years ago Christmas I gave my daughter a challenge. I asked for a handbag from a charity shop. She wasn't to pay more than $50. She was excited for the challenge. She purchased my favorite purse of all time for less the $50 and it was a $350 dollar handbag with the original price tag inside. I grew up wearing second hand clothes to play in and handsewn dresses for school and church. I am closing in on 72 and some of the best things I own are from thrifting. I love your channel!

A friend and I go thrifting frequently and we always enjoy the thrifted gift more. Her absolute favorite gift from me was a cast iron bell with farm animals which she hung outside on her country home. For Christmas she is getting 1 thrifted item, 1 ebay item and 1 clearance item purchased during the summer. I often pick up pieces of her china pattern.. She has gifted to me vintage pots that match what I own, a vintage Christmas Table Cloth and many other vintage items that I love. We compete on who spent the least amount on our gifts to each other. Obviously this doesn't work the same for other friends but I have been known to surprise them on occasion with something they didn't know they needed until I found it!

Books! Books! Books! I don't care if that book has a cracked spine or an old receipt from GameStop back in 2006 from the last person that read it, if it's a book in one of the several genres I like to read than I'm always happy to get one. ❤ also love handmade items.

My sister-in-law gifted me a hand knitted shawl which was made for her mum, who passed away before she could wear it. I live in a drafty old house and always need an extra layer inside, and I was so touched to be given it!

This is definitely a know-your-audience situation. I love secondhand and I'm a crocheter but I learnt the hard way that there are some people who just do not understand the time and effort that goes into a thrifted or handmade gift and after many disappointments at seeing something that took me hours to make or source being 'er'ed at and put aside and never seen again, I am selective about who gets those. I mean, yes, you can't get it right every time but it's the thought that counts, right? Now, the 'er'ers get a bottle of wine or a candle and that's that 😅

I understand you. I gifted my mother hand made items (by myself or made by other crafters) and she always got rid of them. They were items that had lots of work put into them and were well made. It hurts when people don't appreciate it.

I LOVE thrifting!!! My sister and I call our local charity shop "Macy's" in air quotes! 😆 Seriously, though, pretty much everyone I know collects something or other and it's SO easy to add to their collections at thrift stores! And you're so right about thrifting in affluent areas. I have purchased most of my clothing in an area with large, wealthy horse farms and they are all designer, fabulous quality and, sometimes, even dry cleaned before being donated!

I once got a vintage lamp for Christmas. It was a great lamp, but it was not my style.. However, I had it in my livingroom for years. Until someone I know made a ‘pop up café’, and asked me for some decorations to borrow. I gave her the lamp, and she fell in love with the lamp. I said that she could have the lamp, and it is now in her living room. That lamp has become the gift that keeps on giving 😂

One Christmas when I was a kid my parents gave me a large box of secondhand Nancy Drew books. The best gift ever. Dad and I used to spend weekends visiting used books and we both came out with books that we loved. Pretty much all my things are second hand - they are just better than new.

Nice idea but there are 12 charity shops where I live and they all seem to be charging way too much for basically a lot of old tat. We used to buy charity shop gifts all the time at Christmas but now the pricing is getting out of hand and I don’t think it’s really worth it anymore. Love your videos by the way. Always inspiring and quirky! Wish our charity shops were the same 😂.

I actually gave a large bowl that was sitting on my table, to a friend, for a wedding gift. She saw it and fell in love with it, and she knew what it was like to live on a budget. She said she wished she could find items like I had in my home. (many were thrifted or garage sale) She couldn't believe that I would give it up and give to her as a gift. She was very pleased. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same with others, although our shopping list is very short, anymore. Also, food items are welcomed by my family and friends. IE) homemade banana bread, almond bark, pizzelles, and homemade chocolate covered cherries have been hits, in the past. Granted, buying the supplies can add up quickly, but if you watch your sales ahead and just before the holidays, you can find decent buys and the ingredients make a lot of finished goodies.

old books - aah the lovely vintage smell, ooh the thoughts of who read them before me. Especially old encyclopaedias from the late Victorian period. Musky old libraries in manor houses. OK I know, slightly crazy but hey they smell amazing. 😂

My favourite room in my house is my sunroom with my lifetime collection of books. It is essentially a library of fiction, cookbooks, garden, horse, dog, bird identification, travel guides and art books. Also lots of non fiction philosophy and feminist stuff. Masses of biographies, some poetry. I guess I have at least a couple of thousand books and my current home is the only place I have been able to fit them all in a single room! 😂

We didn't buy for Christmas but 2 weeks before, my daughter and I found a shop in OKC called ReThreads. My daughter found like 5 clothing items and I got the first 7 seasons of Big Bang Theory for only $1 per season! I also got a Christmas pillow for $1 and 3 ornaments for 10 cents each. If I had known about this shop, I would have bought gifts from them. We'll be taking donations there in the next week. I agree that thrifting is the way to go for gifts!

About 50 years ago, my best friend's father worked at Goodwill. Well, he managed to snag some Beatles albums (this was the early 70s, so the Beatles had already broken up by then) and she gave them to me for Christmas! I was overjoyed, still a huge Beatles fan and still have the albums :) My sister made the remark with a sneer, "She gave you USED records?" My sister and I had very different personalities LOL

Me and my oldest sister always exchange a "nostalgic" gift every year, something from our childhoods and the presents no matter how inexpensive are always truly treasured. She's also majorly in to books so if I want to buy one for her I have to look for something I know she won't have already! You can find some unique and beautiful gifts through thrifting and I know people who have found some wacky treasures for secret santa! Also, I live for vintage clothes and trinkets 😍 and know not many people will be dressed like me!

Wonderful. And all so very true and good advice. I would add, if there is a family item you like and would one day like to have make it known you like it. With tact please. I think about the various fabulous things my parents have accumulated over their life that I adore. Truly some amazing pieces. And I have been very fortunate that over time, they have gifted some of those to me. So not only have they been loved by them, but also have a second life with me. And bonus, I get the additional memory of my parents imbued in the item too.

I actually put in requests for something vintage/antique. Of course I love a bath bomb, chocolates…..and a video game, if you’re a gamer girl like me, but that little token of something well thought out, that has history and is unlike anything you could buy brand new, just adds depth to the whole present giving and receiving.

I was dead broke and my Mother had a birthday coming up that was going to be celebrated on my sister's fancy boat. all the family were going to be there. I was beside myself as to what I could get her with no money and not be humiliated. I found at a thrift store a beautiful porcelain perfume bottle with 24K gold etching. I paid $5 for it, put it in a box with lots of tissue paper and wrapped it in white paper with a gold ribbon. She absolutely loved it. It was on her dresser till she passed away and I received it back when we as a family cleared out her personal items. It now sits on my dresser. And I am always reminded that gifts from the heart are worth more than diamonds.

I love this site and the individuality of attic finds and also the tour around the vintage home. I look up houses world wide for pass-time, and seriously from my perspective we are losing individualism, the houses in a lot of cases are all charcoal grey kitchens with hobs , depressing, and the furniture is self assembled , an apt is the US could be in China or Europe. The old style was an indication of their culture and custom, with old halls and doors, beautiful. We are mass produced these days where ever we are, this site is uplifting and restores our taste. Thank you for your time putting it together.

I buy Christmas Gifts for those I shop for according to what they like or collect! This means, I usually spend the whole year before Christmas watching garage sales, thrift shops, flea markets & Antique Malls in search of that special item. Things I have given as gifts that were thrifted are the things people remember most, still have, love, enjoy & display continuing to Thank me years later! Usually the new items I received as gifts are long gone, forgotten but the thrifted items I received, I still have years later such as an Antique Gone With the Wind Lamp, tapestry, wash bowl & pitcher set and many other things! Blessings to all who read this for a Glorious Holiday Season!!! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for sharing this. My husband and I have been thinking this is the best way to go with the cost of things you have to have that you can't by at a thrift store, but I also agree with you that it's great to find things that not everyone can, and I enjoy the search and find! Always love your video's and ideas! Thank you

I once bought my Mum a beautiful class ball. She collects them. Same with my Nana and this vintage pottery painted with flowers, I found a jug that went with her collection

My mum buys me so much vintage I've had to ask her to stop as I don't have space left! Some of my favourites are the perfume bottles, brush and mirror set and champagne coupé glasses 🥰

i have been doing second hand or handmade gifts for years- it is the best way to give what folks will really like instead of the latest craze the stores are pushing.

I have thrifted and charity shopped for many years and have bought many lovely gifts for friends and family. I have, as you suggested, mixed charity shopped and shop bought items to create bespoke gift parcels. my friends and family know me well and we have even gift swapped and upcycled things between us and have done for years. my entire wardrobe is pre loved as is most of my furniture. I wouldn't have it any other way.

When I had people to buy Xmas gifts for in the 1980s and 1990s I nearly always bought them from charity shops due to my low income.

I have a collection of old Portmerion china and my daughter in law has found me some wonderful pieces to add to it in her local charity shops. Today I came home with a beautiful blue Scandinavian Christmas plate that cost me all of £1. 😊

“Oh, where did I get it? I found this wonderful little vintage store while I was on vacation, and I saw this and I just knew it would be perfect for you!” You don’t have to tell them it was from the Goodwill shop one town over! 😂🤣

I’m in Germany, where for some reason, the idea getting a second-hand bargain hasn’t fully caught on. Thrift shops are often treated as antique shops & items are insanely overpriced - and sit collecting dust for ages. These places honestly feel more like museums.

Yes, I can full relate to that. I live in Austria and there's exactly the same problem here. Whilst there seems to be a huge number of thrift shops in other European countries like England, Ireland or Denmark, there are next to none in Austria. Overpriced, unimaginative, boring - that's what the few existing ones feel like. And there are as well ones you can only shop in if you have proof that you are low income. Who wants to bother with proof for such a personal matter only to be able to buy a plate in a thrift shop?

I’m too poor to even thrift. I just end up making things for people…scarves, hats, throw pillows…I have a crap ton of yarn.

Yarn can be pretty expensive too, but I also buy a lot of cheap yarn. I think it’s cool that you handmake your gifts. Do you knit or crochet?
