This is my Valve index after 10 months of nearly daily usage. Did it Survive?
Some of my time in usage was pretty rough, but generally it was just daily sometimes 6-8 hour play sessions along with some sleeping in VR if you'd believe that.

hey ThrillSeeker, I work at a virtual reality arcade (worked, cause of covid) and we use the htc vive for half of our headsets, and we have that same issue that you stated at 7:48 and it is because of the cable. We use the 3 in 1 cable that is provided by htc (I'll link it) but we use that same pully system and it only takes about a month to a month and a half of use for us for one cable to die, and it is simply a matter of replacing said cable, which is a little pricey, but worth it for us. yes we do remind our guests to not spin, but for first timers it is extremely difficult to not spin. anyways just thought i'd let you know, it wasn't your headset but the cable, oh and we use a velcro cable tie on the headset to make sure the cable stays on the back of the headset and not on the side.

Valve has a history of great hardware design and questionable build quality. Lighter usage will result in fewer problems but rest assured, there will be problems. That being said, it is the best headset on the market so if you want the definitive experience you just have to deal with it.

To anyone experiencing the cable issue he mentions starting at 7:47: Assuming your headset is fine to begin with and you are sure it is a problem with the cable exclusively (In ThrillSeeker's case, he had broken the mounting tab and therefore needed to replace the HMD itself to prevent future issues), you don't actually have to request an RMA for the entire headset. Valve is more than willing to send you out a replacement cable free of charge (in my experience at least) and this can even be done past your warranty's expiration date (to my knowledge). For anyone having issues replacing their cable because of how it's mounted onto the headset, it's relatively easy to dismount it. Start by taking off the padded face gasket (it's magnetic, don't worry) to expose the port for your cable. Next you'll see a box-shaped clamp just short of where the port is. You're going to want to gently grab it by the front and back (vertically) and gently pull upwards. If you have to shake it a bit, go *forward* and *back* (do NOT wiggle side to side. This will break your tab and cause unnecessary wear and tear in the future). At that point, all that's left is the half-ring clamp on the back of the headrest. This one might tire your thumb the first time around, but the fastest way to remove it is to apply force with your thumb and press it upward (It's very sturdy. It will not crack from doing this. Don't be afraid to get a little rough here). Your cable should now be properly dismounted and you can now pull the plug out from the port. Be mindful that this, too, is going to require a bit of force to get out. Also bear in mind, when replacing the cable, your replacement should be seated as firmly as you can into the port. From here, all you need to do is put back on your clamps and face gasket and it should be good to go. If you are noticing that your HMD is not powering on after replacing your cable, make sure the cable is pushed in far enough into the port. Should my instructions not come clear, or you need pictures, consult this guide on Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/f5g1p0/tutorial_how_to_remove_or_replace_the_cable_from/ Thank you ThrillSeeker for making this video, as it puts a lot of problems that many people experience into perspective for people who are looking into getting their hands on this kit. I've had my Index since the second wave of them came around in August 2019. I've definitely had my share of stick drift and (obviously) the dreaded cable problems. Hopefully this comment will be of use to some people out there who are sitting with a supposedly bricked HMD. Stay safe out there, folks :)

I'd like to say, I work at a VR Arcade, and I believe your "Starry overlay audio popping" problem was actually a cable problem. I don't personally own an Index (Yet, Getting mine later this week) but my arcade uses Vives with a pulley system for each of the headsets. I have had that exact problem you described in your video, and I can say with almost 100% certainty, that the problem was with the cable. After every 6 months or so one of our 10 cables does the same things you described. All we do is pull out the cable, get a new one, and connect the new one. That *should* fix that major problem. It is very much not an "If" but more so a "When" but the best way to keep it safe is after every session you unplug the cable and uncoil it so it is as straight as it can be. Love the content.

It sounds similar to a problem I had with my Vive. I had gotten some longer cables leading up the box, but every once in a while I would go through an entire "re-connect everything, reboot everything, redo it all" process. There was a point where it was happening constantly, really killed my want to play those games. Moved stuff around in my house and my computer ended up in a room which gave me a better play area and decided to hook it all back up. Used the HDMI that came in the box this time thanks to the extra space and no issues since. The Vive cables seems like they are anchored a lot better on the headset itself, but that is probably something Valve can fix in further iterations with the Index.

As a new Index owner (I just got mine today!) and as someone who's never had a VR kit before I wanted to let you know ThrillSeeker that the fatal flaw for the Index is no longer a issues! In addition to the tab on the Index (the one that is known to break) they have also added a new holding strap to the back of the headset to hold the cable. So now the cable drops off of the headset at the back of the users head and not from the side. So they are listening to feedback and showing it with actions! :D

@@snapper26 I also got mine last year, back in March. I haven't played it probably as hard as a lot of people as my play space is rather restrictive, but I have played a lot of variety in games and the headset has always held up well in them with great performance and awesome visual fidelity (even though my computer isn't strong enough for the higher end settings). The cable does have a second cable holder on the back like the first poster mentioned and I haven't seen any signs of ware on the cable at all. Not sure what kinda bad luck @KW Studios got to not have the second cable strap, I can definitely see it breaking easily if that isn't there, but like the video suggests there is always tape as a preventative measure or 'fix'.

@@justghostie4948 it doesn't mean it's a premium that it's going to last forever. You aren't always paying for reliability and the higher the specs, the higher the failure rate. Someone else's Ferarri may not last as long as your Corolla, everyone knows that. By far, the Valve Index is the best out there and they have put a lot of innovation. You will never get anything perfect that's the best and like no other, there are always compromises and such thing doesn't exist. VR has not been for very long, comparing it to something that has been for decades is unfitting. It's also attached to you and moves around more than your pc components. I'm not promoting Valve, but that's just how it is in many things. If you're happy with what you've got well, I'm glad for you. If you don't want to spend that's fine as well, no one is forcing you.

Compared to HTC, Steam tech support is from a different universe. When I got my HTC Vive, its screen broke down after just a few months and I didn't get a replacement, and they wanted me to pay 300€ for the inspection. I didn't, but I had to buy a new visor for 200€ from third party. Soon after one of the controllers broke. I wanted to send it to HTC but after reading that they will probably just do the same they did with the visor and ask for 100€-150€ (more than a new controller is worth) I gave up and just fixed it myself. Few years passed and Valve Index was released, I ordered one but didn't receive it for >3 weeks due to shipping issues. 10:00 also while you play, tuck a loop of cable into your waistband with enough slack that you can move your head around freely. this also removes cable weight, which may cause the index to become more front heavy, but it feels good to me.

I use a velcro strap (that came with the index) to connect a loop of the wire to the top headstrap. It takes weight off of the weakpoint and centers the wire on the back of your head (win-win!).

I made a belt strap and sewed a plastic clip on it so I can just clip that around my waist then a second one for below my left knee to route the cable. The routing gets the cable away from me. if it ever moves to the the wrong spot or if I step on it, I just kick my left leg out and its gone.

So basically: Over-engineer the knuckles to the point they are PS, Nintendo or Xbox worthy. The finish is too bad, but really not an issue as long as the glue doesn't get sticky or the plastic too glossy and slippery. Try and unify the cable design so it is freely available in shops no matter the brand. Get a rugged/kevlar version as well. After all, it's just DP, USB3 and power, right? Headphone manufacturers have started this as well, though it's hardly a standard. Anti-pull devices for cables are far and wide available and have been since as far as I opened electric devices. A C-clamp with a screw, of a rubber molding with a lid. Redesign the base-stations and or way of tracking. Make the back head cushion replaceable as well. use a different glue, perhaps epoxy for the rubber lens gasket. You now, this aint bad, since you've enjoyed months of top notch VR play. It would be way worse to have a really sturdy headset but a 'meh' VR experience. From now on, if Valve listens to the RMA services, they can only improve.

I don't know why (well, that's a lie, I DO know why) more devices don't let you do this, but ESPECIALLY with high-end, expensive hardware like HMDs, they really need to standardize the practice of allowing you to just unplug (not desolder and then add a new one, because most people don't want to do that unless their back is against the wall) the cable, and plug in a new one.

@Zwenk Wiel no, if you use proper, high flexible, probably even a spiral cable, its some sort of indistructable. Its all because the companies save some cents on cables on a device, close to 1000$ the price! I am using sometimes daily over 10 years old (hi end) headphones from Sony and AKG, the sony with a (sadly fixed) spiral cable and the AKG with pretty flexible regular cable, but at least replacable for the 0815 user. Both cables saw already chairs rolling over and are looking still as new, except for some small cuts on a few places. I though already as VR headsets and controls were released, this will be an expensive fun. I also though companies will make much profit with it.... they use cheap controls (see the thumbstick with failures in the video), they use cheap materials (see the material falling off after 9 months usage), they didnt think about the serial number placement (see the rubbed off number)..... Companies like oculus and co made so much money with overpriced plastic inputs which cant even last longer than a year, thats poor, especially with the prices in mind. I would even prefer a cheap headset without electronics inside and only made for smartphones over such expensive, dedicated VR trash. Much cheaper, and i bet with a proper smartphone and lenses in the headset i believe the experience isnt much worse than such a 1000$ headset. Plus there will nothing break :)

0:35 You have some kind of custom cable holder on your ceiling, which is holding the cable before the plug. The cable should disconnect at the plug, they probably made it this way to prevent the damage you have. This is not a problem with Valve's Index, you are using it out of terms, this is why your cable is breaking. I have an Index, and every single time is accidentally pull on the cable, the plug unplugs, which is supposed to happen to prevent too much tension on the cable/index.

More recently I got the common stick drift in the left controller and got it replaced. My serial numbers also faded. My right trigger squeaked awhile but stopped. The grip on that controller also got cracked after a hard hit, and I mended it using plastic bonding agent. The finish on my controllers started getting scuffed by my grip extensions, so I custom wrapped them both in carbon fiber to protect them. A Zip tie is not a good fix here, there will still be movement unless you tighten to a degree that can potentially cause damage or at least pressure/strain of it's own. @@MrChoklad Na that's bullshit. I've had my oculus for 2 years and have put well over 1000 hours into using it. I've had no issues at all with it besides software issues. 1000 hours is only a month and a half of actual use time btw. That's not very much time at all. controllers that cost 280$ shouldn't be having issues in just 1000 hours, a headset that costs 500$ shouldn't need to be replaced in only 1000 hours, A base station that costs 150$ shouldn't just die after 1000 hours. Base stations shouldn't break PERIOD, you don't even touch them like ever. They literally sit in the corner of your room and you do nothing to it. There are obviously design flaws on the Index if after 10 months and 1000 hours he's needed basically the whole entire 1000$ package replaced. I don't really care if he was break dancing or giving birth in VR. It is in valves best interest to make a more durable product so they don't need to replace hundreds of dollars worth of components when they break.
@pacted484
@pacted484 4 жыл бұрын
@@frizzykid100 I disagree with this alot tbh. Of course you should expect anything at this price to do its job no matter what but thats like saying a 100.000$ car should never have to be repaired or a 800$ knife should never have to be sharpened. The list goes on and on there is nothing that never ever breaks. Your argument for the base station for example is the same as argumenting a lightbulb should never fail. At some point it just becomes impossible to guarantee. Especially if it's something as small and delicate as modern technology. Also keep in mind vr is a very new field which is still being developed and improved constantly. Sadly the pest they can do at this point is to offer service included in the price, which in valves case is frankly amazing. This is the case with every premium product out there. Zippo for example doesnt exactly make a product worth their price but you get life long free repairs. Also I'm not sure how much you've ACTUALLY used your oculus but it aswell has alot of design flaws (trigger failure, thumbstick drivt etc.) which a ton of people have. Same as not everyone using the index will have the problems shown in the video. It just depends on every user individually since noone uses their products the same way.
@noisevector
@noisevector 4 жыл бұрын
@@pacted484 Not exactly. Each product you buy has a certain life expectancy for normal use that goes up as the price goes up. This clearly is no budget product and expected lifetime should certainly reflect that in being longer than 1000 hours without everything falling apart. When you buy a decent washing machine, you expect it to last at least say 10 years. You don't want to be repairing it after just 1 year of use.

Barron Trump a Dollar an hour for the entertainment seems fairly reasonable. and anyway 1000 hours was 5 months ago. I’d assume he’s put at least as much again on them. And honestly this is enthusiast hardware, it’s not going to get cheaper, but it will get better, increasing the value.

GorumGamer value is still debatable at this stage in development. Vr tech Is not close to being mainstream yet. Once it goes wireless, has 8k for each eye 180 degree vision and costs $500 then you will see me spend money on this overpriced plastic and laughable tech

We need more companies to makes more high specs, higher quality headsets to compete with the index. Not just more budget oriented ones like Oculus is doing. That's why I've been really curious about HP's next headset since they teased it. Even if we have almost no info on it, from what we know and the pictures it looks promising so far.

Martin B-E Budget oriented VR are the future of VR. We need things like the Rift S because if we don’t keep trying to decrease the entry price of VR it’ll never truly take off like it could because too many people wouldn’t be willing to pay up.

Nothing lasts forever things break or stop working. I think the best part of this video is the valve customer care support knowing if this happens valve will be there to help you. That gives back some hope to all the things that could happen. I have owned electronics that broke that i had totally replace myself and it sucks. Being assured that valve will replace these things makes me happy that i chose the valve headset even more.

Something I’ve noticed with nearly all headsets: The foam in the back part around your head will slowly be pushed away as you use it more and more. You will generally need to find a new cover or possibly even a custom pad to keep your head comfortable while playing.
