You are absolutely right. He once mentioned in an interview that he believes the human voice is a type of musical instrument. He is proficient in many instruments, such as piano, flute, and guitar. He also knows a bit of drums, saxophone, clarinet, hang drum, glockenspiel, synthesizer and other instruments. He said that learning these instruments is simply to make it easier for him to create songs because, when writing, he needs to have ideas for various instruments in his mind. For each section of a song, he needs to figure out which instrument should be used for a particular lyric. He believes that having some knowledge of instruments is necessary to understand what the final arrangement will sound like. His concerts are innovative every year, and his songs are rearranged every year， and this year, he incorporated traditional Chinese ethnic instruments into his concert.

Highly recommend watching the segment in Singer 2018 around huahua's process for arranging this song! He said he didn't eat or drink anything but water for over a day leading up to the performance to ensure his voice could perform perfectly.

For something different there is a Hua Chenyu duet with Su Shiding (or Juno Su?) on "Nanping Evening Bells" from The Next (2016) Ep.10. That was a show involving having to rearrange an old song in 24 hrs. The song is from the late 50's, and he sure rearranged it.

I always give kudos to the female backing singer at the end. After a child plaintively asking questions, her voice is like a mum giving her child a hug. Superb concept and delivery of that. Hua Hua used Singer 2018 to tell HIS story through the songs he chose.. IN ORDER. Starting with "Qi Tian" (why was I born to be so different), "Child" (his lonely and bullied childhood. "Nunchucks" his (rebellious phase), and on through the weeks telling his journey to "find himself and fit in". His song choices tell of his efforts to fit in, his failings, others failings, and eventually the wonderous "I am what I am" (by his own idol Leslie Cheung). 😢 Such a clever concept to tell viewers who he was, and his struggles to overcome his quirkiness and fit in, and be accepted. As others say... "Nanping Evening Bells" and "Perhaps Love" (both with Su Shiding) will show you the true genius of Hua Hua. She was a Contestant. He was her Mentor on the show "The Next". They were GIVEN a song and 24 hours to reimagine it, and perform it. Genius at work. He also helped Ma Lu with "Idiot" (imagine 1984 "Big Brother" as a song). If possible, you should try to see the programme The Next after he is given a song to reimagine. 😳 You can see him working through the process of each reimagining...to performing.

Hi Johnny and Richard, thanks a lot for this. This video is from Bamboo Baby and they tend to slow down the tempo to get around copyright rules. This performance was from the show Singer 2018, meaning it underwent post production edit but that doesn't negate his vocal prowess. Hua Hua said in an interview years ago, I think back in 2016 or 2017 that he considers his voice as one of the musical instruments. I also recently learnt that the brand of speakers he used for his concerts were chosen more for clarity in amplifying musical instruments than vocals. This song "Child" was composed by a songwriter called 西楼 or "Xi Lou" (sounds like See Loe). Hua Hua's very well-known song from his debut album "Ashes from Fireworks" - which you haven't reacted to - was written by Xi Lou. "Ashes..." sometimes called "Dust in Fireworks" has lyrics that's related to "Child" although Hua Hua didn't include "Child" in his album. Hua however, composed "Quasimodo's Gift" which is somehow linked to "Ashes in Fireworks" because he made a mini movie for these two songs. Cheers!
