It's actually true that getting rank 1 requires a lot of playtime. It kinda depends the state of your server. For me it was enough to take part in evening PvP without doing day PvP but the gap starts to get tighter as some people farm each single PvP event including night time open world dungeon (which I barely do).

I didn't swipe that much for my gear, mostly for cosmetics. So far I farmed close to 30k lucent which was enough to get my gear mostly traited. Missing a lot of traits on my accessories and I'm still running some blue items :) since I was performing well in ZvZ I got the Reaper's pants from my guild which indeed was a big upgrade for my gear.

Bow/staff shines in ZvZ but really falls down in any smaller scale PvP content like arenas or dominions. You should be glad though hearing that NCSoft is working on a balance patch and Flash Wave and Tornado are on the menu, aside balances on the Greatsword and SnS.
