So I bought a 2009 gran turismo last year. Put about 4K miles on it. Has been a great experience. I think you have to have the right attitude about “maintaining it” and what you will be willing to fix and what you can ignore/live with- but if you can do that you are rewarded with an absolutely incredible car experience for less than the price of a base 4 cylinder mustang. Yes- it really does put a huge smile on your face everytime you grab the keys for any reason, and at least a grin everytime you walk by it in the garage. Thats worth a lot.

@@samn1217so when you are coming to a stop you can just pull both the paddles (on the F1) to drop it into neutral and coast to a stop. But you never do this. Ever. The only thing is is that the base price was over $113kUS in 2008, so adjusted for inflation the base price of $158k for the Modena is cheaper than what inflation would suggest it should cost $162k It was always a premium purchase when compared to what else you could buy. We kept on waiting for couple of seconds, the sound was getting louder and louder but still no car to be seen. Then came this beautiful GranTurismo. The only issues I have had in over 2 years of owning my 2012 Maserati GranTurismo S with the even better 4.7L engine is the air conditioning and rough running and warning lights on the dash. The A/C compressor went out and was sorted for about $1,100 with an independent A/C shop that does work on high end cars and the other issue was fixed with the installation of a new $300 battery. The TPMS light is always on but the previous owner fixed it and it still broke. It can’t recalibrate and so the light stays on even though the system gives accurate pressure readings. I have just learned to live with it. I also have the sticky buttons which also happens to Ferraris as well. But none of that matters when you put it in Sports mode and let her rip. As an owner of a Maserati QP 2008 Sport GTS, I can say preparation is everything. I put money aside for its yearly repairs, and have always been prepared for the worst (I charge the batteries, make sure the tires are on the right pressure, don't kick it when its cold etc.), but so far have been very surprised by how little maintenance was required. The tire pressure sensors go out, thats a given on all these old maserati's, don't bother replacing them. Brakes etc. are expensive, just like any other sports car. Besides that, solid as a rock, now going over 100.000km, and I haven't paid much more on maintenance than on my BMW 3 series (X5 is actually more expensive!). The feeling however I get when driving it, and just looking at it, is very different than any other car I've owned.

Those who took part in the study listened to a variety of engine sounds from a number of cars, and after hearing the Maserati engine, all of the female test subjects had higher testosterone levels in their saliva. High testosterone levels can be indicative of a stirred libido. @@LoganSLRLockwood not sure about CAD prices, but if you get extreme low end of the Maserati GTs you can be around 25K USD. You won’t find any Ftypes there, because they’re just not as old or beat up as those Maseratis, but on average for a Maserati GT you’re looking at about 35k-40k USD which becomes Ftype V8 range. And this is the range you’d be making this comparison.

Thank you guys for this inspiring test. I‘m owning the old GranTurismo but the latest iteration from 2018. With the 4.7 Litre V8 with 460BHP and the much quicker ZF 6 Speed Gearbox (it hits you in the Neck in Sportmode above 5000 RPM), with the much quicker Steering, with Skyhook Dampers (soft or stiff), with the Sportseats, Rearview Camera and, last but not least, the Touchscreen Nav with Apple Carplay. This Car, for what as it was new, i’ve payed "just" 120.000 €, is the much better Competitor to the new one. And with that in Mind, the new GT for just double the Price, i can not go with the newer. Never Mind, what the 0-60 time of the new GT is. It simply doesn‘t matter, if you hear the V8 screaming. I‘ve driven it for 150.000km and never had a big issue. Just small ones like a Parkingsensor not working.

Probably could have been fairer to the old car, much more expensive crap old ferraris are just the same and testing the cheapest you could find it will obviously have issues. My Cayman had sticky buttons, the gearbox exploded and ims is a worry. Also nobody ever mentions that the maserati will easily fit 4 adults or 2 kids in car seats. Still nice to see a comparison. Great vid.

The original GT was succeeded by the GTS. From around 2013 onwards, there was then the face lifted version also (GT Sport), and these generally don't have the variator issues that the older 4.2 version had. Then there was a third face lift model with updated infotainment, reversing camera etc. There were other cosmetic packages you could get (MC Sportline) on these, and of course there was the hardcore MC Stradale (the only one really that hasn't suffered the extreme depreciation the others have - although, still depreciated). I own the GT Sport version with the 4.7L and the facelift. It's fantastic. My God it's slow - it handles like a bus, I get smoked by almost any other even slightly 'sporty' car, and well, you can guess the maintenance costs I'm sure. But these older cars are future classics. They may never (and probably won't ever) appreciate in financial value - but the aesthetic value (both visual and sonic) is the epitome of beauty. Whilst the rear end does look dated, the front end, with the long bonnet covering the V8 which is placed just behind the front axel looks stunning. And the sound - well - the truth is that that is the be all and end all of this car - I can't think of another V8 that comes close (sorry Jaguar f-type fans!) I think I'd only be disappointed if a v10 LFA pulled up alongside - and, well, the likelihood of that happening is near-on zero! When you drive somewhere in this car, every time, without fail, its an experience. You'll hold your breath a touch, waiting for the next maintenance light, but once you've mentally hurdled that, this touring car is a dream to drive. It's a Maserati! It's history says it all. Fantastic video guys!

I am lucky to have a GT cabrio with 4,7l engine already 13 years old and, surprise surprise, it's absolutely reliable and very cheap to maintain. All you need is a good, competent service, outside official network, and the cost of maintaining Maserati in a perfect shape is below the cost of diesel S-Klasse or Volvo XC 90 that I also happen to own. You guys did a great job, but you got a creepy wreck for the test, no wonder you disliked it;) In Europe these cars are more and more expensive now, as it is the last V8 and the last Maserati's V8 cabrio. Long story short they offered me a Maserati upgrade at no additional cost. I didn't ask what model, I just thought it would be nice to try one out. When I walked up to the car and realized it was a Levante (crossover) I was disappointed, but I just accepted it. At first I was not impressed. The turbo lag could be timed with a sundial!. However, after spending a day with the car I fell in love! Amazing sounding engine. Handled great for a non sports car. I know the Levante V6 isn't as tuned as the engine in the GranTurismo. It also had the ZF. Just like Thomas I used those glorious shifters just to keep the revs in the sweet spot. I loved the two weeks I spend with that car!

Fun comparison! Now I challenge y’all to compare my 2006 Maserati GranSport with 110.00 miles! It’s currently worth about $7,500 but runs great and (knock on wood) is reasonably reliable. In 8 years and 50,000 miles she has always started and always got me home. Yes, a few items such as alternator ($1,000); new AC compressor and AC refurbished system ($3,000). Eventually it will need a new clutch($6,000) but I plan to keep her for as long as possible! If you are comfortable doing some work yourself a decent used GranSport is a bargain.

I recently purchased a 09 Quattroporte S with the 4.7L engine. The Quattroporte and granturismo share the same underpinnings and power plant during this generation. The one I purchased has an unbelievable 5000 miles for $30k. That is insane a Ferrari powered sedan with an original sticker of 150k for that price. Hell a base Camry starts at $26k. I have been researching these cars for the last few months. I have been checking on owner reviews and the overwhelming majority say they have been reliable and have enjoyed their experience. I also own an e39 M5 and I have put a lot of money into it since I originally purchased it in 2013. So I do know about rod bearings, timing chain guides and valve cover gaskets. You just don’t hear about major issues with the QP power plant. Yes you should be able to do your own oil changes and wrenching from time to time. They will all cost money to run. As they say you have three choices to pick from fast, cheap, or reliable and you can only have two. I much prefer the QP exhaust to my m5 with a muffler delete this engine sounds like nothing else and the video doesn’t do it justice. In person it’s stupendous. I think this is one of the most under appreciated cars out there. If they just put a prancing horse on it they would be 80k all day. Yes the duo select car is crap and should be avoided at all cost but the updated car with the zf is generally reliable. I think because it’s not a manual gearbox car it gets overlooked right now but when enthusiasts start to mis the roar of an Italian V8 they will give this another look.

I have a 2009 Maserati QP Executive GT 4.7 since brand new with 58k miles. I changed out the entire cooling system (thermostat too), a/c, 4 shock tower braces, variator (not broken but why wait for it to break when i'm in NowhereUSA), 3 engine mounts, Bovee 30pin to bluetooth converter, replaced 3 front speakers with Foçal beryllium copper speakers n German amp pumping out super clean music but never overpower the beautiful exhaust note. TPMS is constantly ON but a $30 old school tire pressure gauge works fine.

I have a 2013 granturismo sport in the beautiful blue metallic color... So far the only problem is a problematic seat adjusting motor, I found a replacement on eBay for 60 bucks! I daily drive my Maserati, I started out with 50,000 miles and I'm piling them on, and I intend to keep driving it, repairing it when necessary and continuing, rinse and repeat...

This is very early model of V8 GranTurismo. Should have picked late 2014y model, which are still relatively cheap. All those first release errors are fixed and +50hp from engine.

I still want a 4.7 badly. And a Quattroporte 4.7 for the family trips. Both are absolute bargains right now, and reliable as far as Italian cars go.

Uhhh no I’d Argue “as far as Italian goes” the reliability award goes to Alfa Romeos. Then again, I’ve never owned neither. It’s just that the bad rep is pretty commonplace for mechanics to bash.

Honestly I just remember smoking a Gran Turismo in my ftype r... I just feel like people who buy Maserati's are just in denial about the poor quality and got obsessed with the trident logo. The trident got you boys. But I get it, people like what they like. Great vid!

Both you guys rock! excellent review and as an owner of a sexy 2014 Red Maserati GT MC, I must say this - there is no looking back from that V8 sound and the classy looks. I have a 2012 Sportline. No issues. The car in this video is the older model with the 4.2 liter and known for more issues. I believe they made some changes in 2011 and major changes in 2013 to alleviate known issues. Ideally I would get a 4.7 liter with the ZF transmission that's known to be bulletproof (not the pushbutton f1). Ideally you would want a 2013+ model but the 2012 is still okay when compared to previous years. If you find one that's been well maintained and a local mechanic that knows European cars and avoid the dealerships you'll be fine.
