Growing Up Without Borders

5 жыл бұрын

Thun is an excellent destination to travel to if you want to admire the beauty of nature in Switzerland. It is conveniently located in the centre of the Bernese Oberland region and it is a perfect mix of lake and mountain amidst mild weather that lasts well into autumn.
Thun’s most recognizable landmark is the Thun Castle, also known as “Schloss Thun”. With history going back all the way to when the first settlers arrived in the city in 2,500 B.C, this building has a lot of stories to tell. The castle’s fortification tower was built in 1180 and since then it has been converted into a museum with over five floors of cultural development. It houses historic artifacts from around 4,000 years, as well as medieval objects, weapons and uniforms from the 18th and 19th century. There is also the magnificent Knight’s Hall, restored in modern times but dating back to the 12th century.
The Old Town in Thun perfectly compliments the castle. With its raised pavements and museums you’ll feel like you have stepped back in time. In a way, the Old Town is highly traditional with the town church dating back to 1330, and the town hall erected in the 16th century. However, Thun has also caught up with modern times, as there are a few brand new cinemas in the town and many restaurants offering local and international cuisine. The top activity here, though, is shopping - with almost 1,000 shops offering anywhere from watches, sports equipment, and clothes to souvenirs, handicrafts, and art objects.

Watching from Connecticut, USA. I am a retired teacher and of Swiss nationality as both grandparents were born in Neuchatel, Switzerland and moved to the USA. I so enjoy watching all of your videos. So entertaining and enough to learn more about a country or countries. I started watching with the Christmas shopping outside in Switzerland about a year ago and just became a fan.

That looks like a good way to see a city, a treasure hunt!! I will have to check out online that water system in Thun, sounds interesting. That Hotel was famous in the "bell epoch" era for a stop on the "grand Tour" in the victorian/edwardian era. I really like the construction in the cover walkway, wonderful woodwork in the roof to slope the stresses down slope.

Uh oh Mama Bear! Your eldest daughter is taller than you!!!! :) Anyways, in Hawaii, USA and Washington State, USA it is prohibited to walk through a retirement home or nursing home without permission. You can check in and see if they allow visitors, but most do not. I worked in retirement homes when I was a teenager in Washington and as a freshman college student in Hawaii. Its nice to see how they really take good are of their elderly in Switzerland. Over here in Hawaii it seems that the elderly are forgotten and its heart wrenching to watch.
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders 5 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I thought. Well, the schools here aren’t locked up like they are in the US/Canada either. I love how they have retirement homes right in the city centers and elderly can go for a nice stroll and interact with people on the streets.

I’ve worked in nursing homes and assisted livings in Portland OR 10+ years ago. You had to check in at the front desk. It’s not common to have treasure hunters. However, The residents would have loved if you all visited with them. It’s a very sad existence to be incapacitated and no one visits you except to change your diaper and feed you.

I really don't like to correct you, but at 6:52 you must misunderstood something, or misread it. That is by far not an "old" hotel, compare to others in switzerland: likemag.com/de/best-historic-hotels-das-sind-die-10-aeltesten-hotels-der-schweiz/208943 The hotel "Trois Rois"/"Three Kings" in Basel is one of the oldest in switzerland, first mention in 1681. Some stories are not confirmed and dated even more early, 1026, but probaly not historical correct.

Same in Japan no one will get or touch your things even if you left your personal stuff in public or private place ... they have lots of lost and found offices anywhere in subway or buildings were you may claim your belongings because Japanese are one of the honest in world...when they find something they will hand it over to the lost and found nearest location perhaps I was able to invite my swiss aunt and uncle for a 2 week holiday in Japan they were awed and surprise with the beauty and culture of the country and its people.

That’s amazing! It’s not like this every in Switzerland though. I’ve learned first hand because I forgot a cooler bag somewhere and we lost both phones inside. On the other hand, we once lost our credit card and someone had returned it to the police. That was such a surprise to me. Nice to hear that Japan is like this too!

Yeah, it’s quite common to see graffiti in Switzerland. They’ve even done a few nice projects where the kids actually get involved in doing it at the underpasses or even school walls. (It’s more street art but pretty much the same)
