In 1956, the US Air Force Air Demonstration Team, the Thunderbirds, were relocated to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Here they gained supersonic capabilities with their new F-100C's "Super Sabres", which they would fly until 1969.

@@joebidome1445 Nothing is wrong, the Air Force is doing better then ever really. There’s only the F-35 issue, not necessarily the problems anymore but still it’s pretty pricey along with the A-10 situation.

The Air Force consists of really smart people who want to fly badass jets …and really lazy people that want the benefits of serving without having to step foot in a war zone. Also the army has cool lil toys like grenade launchers n stuff, so I find the army more fun.

My great-grandfather was Capt. Robert Anderson and was the Thunderbird's Solo/Left Wing from 1955-1957. I didn't know him very well but his legacy is talked about lots in my family. Thank you for sharing this footage of him.

I agree but being an early super sonic jet, it was plagued with teething issues for half of its service career. The Sabre Dance was eventually solved with refinements to the airframe and improved pilot training.

@@meal_team_6 It’s a problem common with early Sabre models before the F-100D. If the plane got too slow while trying to land, there’s a chance the plane will experience a stall due to a lack of lift in the outer wings. The nose will start to pitch up, the plane becomes more unstable, and the pilot will lose control of the aircraft resulting in the Sabre Dance. This phenomenon was often fatal as the pilots had little time to recover from the stall due to being so close to the ground. These issues were solved in the F-100D which featured larger wings and a longer vertical stabilizer resulting in improved stability at lower airspeeds. The pilots also learned to land at high speeds to reduce the chances of stalling, especially in older Sabre models.

I've actually seen both the blue angles and Thunderbirds when I was a kid. They use to have airshows back in 2004-2012 they would show off all the latest equipment it was pretty cool.

1:46 good god I love this shot. The film quality adds a sort of haze over the event, linking it to this specific point in time. However it being shot POV style, like many early YT vids of air shows were bring in a nice human aspect linking then and now together, creating the feeling that this guy was probably just standing there mouth wide open and how crazy these aircraft must have been at the time. I know MajorSamm has literally no control over how these things are shot, but he obviously has control over how these videos are edited, and after doing this for so long, I can't help but feel he may have had a similar thought process.

The F-4 probably was at least about the same. Both airplanes were not designed to do aerobatics.

You'd have to look up the numbers to see which plane had the highest accident rate while being used by demonstration teams. And the F-4 may have had more accidents overall because it was used by both the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.

I don't know what it is, but colored film from around this time period, (30s-50s) looks so colorful and vibrant in a way that film from later time periods lack. I can't really explain it, but it just seems more wholesome, in a way?
