Games Workshop would have no leg to stand on accusing anyone of plagiarism given that half the 40K lore ideas are borrowed from other franchises like Dune. @@chainsawboy2388 Please, dont repeat this misinformation, Starcraft was never meant to be a 40k game, it was a rumor that has been debunked by both parties, there are simmilarities, yes, but those come from using the same source materials as inspiration, like Starship Troopers and Alien. Also, the Tau came in 2001, the Protoss were developed back in 96 and the game came out in 98.

Yes, but actually No... to Starcraft originally being a Starcraft game. You see, Blizzard Entertainment tried to make their original Warcraft game as a Warhammer game, but Games Workshop didn’t want to give Blizzard Entertainment creative control. So their deal fell through. Blizzard just changed Warhammer enough and renamed it Warcraft... essentially bypassing any copyright issues. Shortly thereafter Blizzard Entertainment just came out with Starcraft, which had a ton of parallels with earlier Warhammer 40k themes. There's been a ton of speculation from there that Blizzard Entertainment clearly just ripped off 40k, and then the obvious urban legend which shifted Warcraft Originally being a Warhammer Fantasy game into Starcraft Originally being a Warhammer 40k game, but nothing that proves it was the case has been released by Blizzard or Games Workshop. Now a lot of people will go further and state it was clearly independently built and totally Original, just coincidence. However thats probably a load a c***, as 40k by the 90s was WAY more popular than Warhammer Fantasy. So pretty much everyone at Blizzard Entertainment who was aware of Warhammer Fantasy probably was super aware of Warhammer 40k. So it most likely was inspired by 40k, just unlike say Space King which is clearly a parody or Helldivers 2 which freely admits 40k was one of its biggest inspirations, we get Starcraft where most everyone can draw the implications that its inspirated by 40k, they just can't prove it. As to why Blizzard Entertainment won't admit the obvious... I mean would you admit 2 out of 3 of your biggest IPs (Intellectual Properties) are basically another companies rebranded product?

5:10 A lot of these comparisons are pretty surface level. There is probably a fair amount of inspiration from 40K, but a lot of the writing and more specific design elements are sufficiently different. The Protoss somewhat resemble the Eldar on the technology end, but they don't have nearly as many humanoid units and even their core biology is pretty different, with a VERY inhuman-looking head as opposed to Space Elves; writing-wise, the Protoss seem too tribal and fanatical to be considered "just Eldar" based on my limited 40K experience. The Zerg have, to my knowledge, a lot more varied body-types than the Tyranids, which typically are either vaguely humanoid or quadrupedal and often share body types with each other (like the Gaunts and Gargoyles), while the Zerg have units like the silverfish-like Defiler, serpentine Hydralisk, weird shrimp-like Mutalisk, and the manta ray-esque Drone and Brood Lord, even having a different main behavior system of infesting planets with their own architecture and lingering instead of eating everything and then leaving. Of course, the Terrans aren't a theocracy that worships a corpse on a throne, nor do they have anything even remotely close to the Primarchs, nor even many of the Imperium units that I'm aware of like the Dreadnaught and Space Marine-operated vehicles - the closest similarity I can think of between the Terrans and Imperium is the Marine itself, and even then those function more like the disposable Imperial Guard rather than the hyper-elite angels of death that are the Space Marines.

Starcraft is super hard as a competitive multi player game, but the single player campaign is superb and pretty doable, even for RTS beginners (unless you play on the higher difficulties, then you should know what you're doing :)) Starcraft 1, I'd say is even better story-wise, but the gameplay is of course more dated. In any case, the whole Saga (Starcraft 1, Broodwar, SC2 - Wings WoL, SC2 - HotS, SC2 - LotV) is absolutely worth playing even just for story enjoyers. Beats just watching the cinematics, since those usually don't include briefings, in-mission dialogue and mini cut scenes, so parts of the story are hard to follow. But, if one were just to enjoy the story without having to play, the cinematic supercuts on youtube are good enough. Highly recommended :) PS: yes, the Warhammer similarities are kind of in your face :D If I remember correctly, the games were supposed to be 40K games at some point, but then somehow it didn't happen. No idea if that's actually true or just rumours, but in any case, both Warcraft and Starcraft are clearly inspired by Warhammer/40K

Games Workshop never gave the rights to Blizzard, so in response to Warhammer Fantasy Blizzard made Warcraft, Starcraft was a separate case, also Space Marines cinematic, was literally inspired by this one from 2007 not the other way around, and the Tyranids besides they did not appear in a video game until 2004, They didn't look like they do now until their third edition in 2001, so technically the Zerg inspired a lot of aspect of the tyranids race back then.

Towards the end of development, GW decided to walk away from the deal, so Blizzard was like...well that's a lot of development time, let's not waste it. Change the name, just feature Imperium of Man, Zerg and Tau...but change their names and maybe their look a little. Drop the elves. And BAM, StarCraft was born. TBH, I've played StarCraft since I was a kid and I've played the DoW games. Though I think the lore is much cooler in 40K, they never got the RTS part down quite right. DOW 1 was best. StarCraft feels really good, and I like the simplicity of the three races. Would be happy to play it with you sometime if you're up for it. By the way...internet cafe?
