while researching smart watches I looked for a video explaining how the outdoor navigation would work on various watches. there was not a lot of information.
so I made my own demonstration to help others in their decision making process.
There is no affiliation or sponsorship involved in this video. I purchased this watch with my own money.

Thank you, great vid, I've just picked up the Pro 3 Ultra new for £99.99 so I'm hoping it's the same. I can't find anyone who uses the Alltrails app so I'm again hoping that will work as I've got the paid for version. If not Outdoor active here we come.

I have been in two minds between T Rex Pro 2 and this. The reason why I was weary of this was the waterproof claims in terms of wading in water when hiking as many people stated (on amazon) it wasn't waterproof and the waterproofness deteriorates over time. However, my main reason for my purchase decision would be for route navigation and your video ticked all those boxes. Thank you. Will seriously consider the ticwatch pro 5 now.

One last thing, upon returning to the 1-star Amazon reviews last night, many claimed freezing and or crashing - has this been something you have experienced at all? I imagine they mostly occurred before the wear OS update but not sure. @@CampLifeBushcraft

Hey, when using the ultra low power secondary display, does it show you only the compass, or you can see the gps track/path or some kind of simplified maps? How's the reliability of compass and the satellite lock in the bush? Thanks for the great review!

G'day Dan, ....... but does it tell time ......... only jok'n of course. I like it, its better than others I've seen and pretty well priced in the market here too. And no usage fees, ..... excellent ...... I hate that !!!! I'm still gonna carry a map & compass though, for our ol' mate Just-in Case; a coupla days worth at a time is great, .... but batteries are still batteries. Anyway, well demo-ed mate, I'll do some more research, seriously considering one, many thanks for showing it. Cheers Duke.

It does indeed also tell the time 😂 I like contingencies, and map plus is my method. Some of these devices can cost the earth. This one seemed to me to be a good middle ground. Looks OK, durable enough and covered the functions I wanted. Within a moderate price point. And I probably spent the better part of 3 months researching and debating with myself about it 😉 Hope all is well over there with you 👍

@@CampLifeBushcraft Hahaha, glad to hear it does time too Dan, with all that capability, you'd certainly be wanting an explanation if it didn't. You're dead right mate, some are in excess of a high end phone, or a decent laptop for that matter. I spent similar dough to this one on a "fitness focused" Garmin job for wifey, (she's into distance running); respect, but bugger that !!! lol, ..... I'd much rather have the benefits of this on the wrist. Looks clear and certainly detailed enough for any hiker to get where they're going, or to get of strife, and I very much like the easy zoom too. Anyway, I'll see how we go, it is still the equivalent price of ... many a beer ; ) All good mate, being spring here, plenty of jobs in the garden, but P155'n down at the moment, so inside chores it is for the time being. You seem very well, all that walk'n up hill and down dale has gotta have been good, .... and I do hope the fam is too.

I have planned a route on my phone (with outdoor active) sent it over to my watch and downloaded it.. then turned off my phone. so I think that's a yes. unless I've misunderstood the question.

Niffty device... must be weird for you... As someone who never wears a watch! Do you still have to have bluetooth on your phone running? Coz that zaps battery

Yeah, it's a bit alien on my arm. But handy on the hikes for sure. It's connected via Bluetooth all the time normally. But I haven't noticed a significant drain on my phone battery. If you download the map to the watch, you then don't need your phone. But obviously, keeping it tethered means I get all the notifications etc come through, so the phone can be put away for the day and not opened up. Which helps with battery life.

I bought this one. And to be fair it's pretty usable. I'm not too fussed about the fitness tracking stuff but the maps are really useful. As is the heart rate stuff.. the low power screen changes colour depending on your heart rate. Useful when struggling up a hill!

I use the Google fit app to record activities. This will run in the background while the outdoor active navigation app is open.

Pretty cool device, is it much different than a Garmin? Has a lot of features and the multiple apps are handy. Will be waiting for a long term review Dan. Thanks👍👍

Garmin is a bit like Apple, I feel. Everything is Garmin' this Garmin that. I'm not sure they play well with 3rd party stuff. This one runs on wear os, which is a more open platform imo. That being said, my judgement is skewed as I had a bad experience with Garmin a few years back. I bought Carly a Garmin watch that didn't work properly from day 1 and had a terrible time with them as a company. The customer service was shocking. I had to throw my toys out the pram, and it took months to get a refund. I swore I'd never buy anything off them again.
