British couple leave Estonia after 6 months and finally head to Finland - Tallinn to Helsinki Ferry crossing
After an unplanned six months living in Estonia (due to the pandemic) and driving around the entire country, we spent our final days in Tallinn Old Town catching up with friends and ticking off a few places that we wanted to see before we left, such as going inside Paterai prison which was truly haunting learning about the communist terrors that took place there. We also made our way over to the Kumu art museum as well as going to see the Christopher Nolan movie Tenet which was filmed right here in Tallinn.
We enjoyed strolling along those cobbled streets a few more times and realised how lucky we are to have spent so long living in this city during such a unique time where the streets have been empty of tourists. Tallinn really feels like home to us now and packing up to leave was emotional but we know we’ll be back, we love it far too much not to.
We spend our final day running all around the capital city Tallinn getting some errands done before finally getting the ferry we were supposed to get months ago and heading off to the next country - Finland!
We were so excited to be moving on to another country but as you’ll see here it’s been fun to look back at the last 6 months of adventures we’ve had in Estonia - Arriving in March just as the borders closed and deciding to cancel ongoing travels and stay put indefinitely, watching the city and country slowly come to life in spring, exploring Tallinn - museums, memorials, beaches, the Medieval Old Town, Telliskivi, baltic plunges, TV Tower, we even starred in a real medieval movie, Made the front cover of a National Estonian Newspaper and made friends and memories to last us a lifetime!
Now we continue our journey around the world because as a wise friend said to us recently, “Never let your memories become bigger than your dreams.”
Upcoming videos!
Join us next time as we head out on our first day in Finland and explore the capital city Helsinki!
If you can’t wait that long head over to our instagram tideknottravellers for daily updates on what we’re currently up to and what’s coming up in our future videos!

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

Having an Estonian wife, I knew some of what you would see. BUT you have also shown me places the wheelchair would never get to, and helped to complete more of MY picture of Estonia too. I know my trips there have never been long enough, so can imagine the love you now have of the country. Keep up with the travels, we love seeing the world through your eyes.

Welcome to Finland. I hope you can get in because at the moment Finland has somewhat tighter Covid restrictions than Estonia. You maybe recommended or sent to 2 weeks quarantine (not 100% sure how it's done at the moment) but after that i don't think you're going to have any problems. It's highly recommended (but not mandatory) to wear facemask on public transport and in stores and those are easy to buy from almost any store or pharmacy. Especially the disposable masks. Most stores recommend paying with card instead of cash. In Helsinki region public transportation you need to buy ticket in advance before getting on board because bus drivers are not selling tickets and tram drivers stopped selling tickets few years ago. Also trains don't sell tickets onboard except maybe long distance trains (again that is something i'm not 100% sure of) Tickets can be bought from R-kiosks and some stores and with a HSL smartphone app (which is slightly cheaper than buying from kiosks or stores). Edit: That same app also has a route guide that can help you get around around Helsinki region using public transport, bike or walking.
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all the info 😊 we used the HSL app which was really easy to use and figure everything out, it’s a great set up!

@@TideKnotTravellers No problem. At least it's cheaper than taxi and it covers bus, tram, metro, commuter trains in HSL area and the ferry to Suomenlinna sea fortress but i think that place is best seen in summer and difficult to explore fully with this much snow as we have right now.

Actually every supermarket have bottle recycling machines, on your route u had a few of them like at Rimi. Also you tried to put yoghurt bottles, they are not deposited (you didnt pay 10c for them), only drinking bottles with deposit and [A] or [B] sign on them can be returned. But still very funny, how super easy bottle returning process turned in throwing them into garbage :D P.S last error message on machine said that last bottle was unrecongized, so you should remove that, and then press button and get you money :D (someone got lucky that day)

Great video folks. When I was living there I used to leave my empty evian,Al'coq, saku bottles in the bins attached to lamposts for the homeless. They used to go round at night and pick them up. I would put a few estonian kroons in the bottles for a surprise for them. Did you visit Old Hansa for dinner one night.? Great restaurant. Himalayan lamb every time we went there. Delicious. Is the beer house still there. ? Had some amazing nights there. Friday night's live band, and a different band upstairs midnight till 3am fri /sat. Great food too. There was a nimega bar / nimeta bar in the old town .used to be owned by a English guy. Used to show the English football in there. There was a Russian restaurant called Trokia, was in the worlds 100 best restaurants at the time, although to be honest, when we went there,I'd of been happier in a harvester. Good luck guys.

10:49 Why did you look up the most remote and abandoned station, usually stores have one attached on the back or sides that is taken cared of several times every day. On the screen it say's "unrecognised bottle!" with red and bottom left it tells you "Support number 6005626 w w w,taara,ee", that button is to get your check and on the small building/unit there's somewhere marked where you can take the check to to get the money (usually the store that is attached with), also you can go to the store it is attached to and tell the mashine is broken and you allready inserted this number of bottles but it did not give you the check so to reinburst you guys (also mention you have it all in video). They will fix the issue and give you the money (might need to show the video but usually if it is not an absurd number they will give it after they confirm the device is not functioning correctly and giving check's, that takes only fes seconds to confirm). The station you found seeme to be abandoned, liderally, i was amazed there was electricity still on. All the ones in my life i have seen have been in much better condition. May i ask where it was ?

Next time we’ll get it right😅 but we tried so hard to find one, we thought it would be as simple as going to our local Rimi but none of them had a machine. So we asked people and they suggested the shopping centre at Viru gate. So we went there, asked the staff working there and they sent us to the car park in Viru.

Actually deposit packaging system in Estonia works very well, like almost perfectly. I remember there were even news that somehow Estonians are returning more bottles than circles in the market. Some "clever" guys from Finland/Latvia/Lithuania collected bottles there (no deposit package system there) and took them to Estonia. But good news ends there, all other waste materials are not collected properly. Right now quite a scandal here, how people wash their packaging, sort them out correctly, but almost all of it still ends up in oven and not recycled.

@@TideKnotTravellers Yes, you were lucky. You are two of the only people I know who had luck from the lockdown! I am a US citizen; born in the US; however, my ancestry is from the Czech Republic; but I have never been to Europe, though I certainly grew up with many elements of the Czech culture. I think all of the countries that were behind the iron curtain are just beautiful, almost unspoiled and they retain so much of their culture and history, yet they are modern enough to offer conveniences that we westerners take for granted. It seems like Estonia was also economically a good place to be, not as expensive as western Europe or even compared to Finland. Is that true? Thank you for making so many beautiful videos. I knew Tallinn was beautiful from photos, but I had no idea just how beautiful. In fact, the whole country of Estonia is as picturesque as it can be! I wonder if Estonians realize just how fortunate they are; though it is obvious that Koit does!
@TideKnotTravellers

Yes, Estonia is more affordable than Finland but not much different price wise than Western Europe, food and accommodation is similar to what you’d pay in say Italy, Spain or France. Since doing this series we have had lots of messages from Estonian’s saying they loved seeing their country here, it’s so easy to overlook beauty on your own doorstep. You’re right though, Koit certainly appreciates Estonia!🇪🇪😊

Hi! I am thinking to go to Tallinn for several months. Is it a good time to be there from March-June? I wanted to avoid cold weather 😅 as well, i am not sure when the video was shooted but there seems to be a sense of normalcy there, are there Covid restrictions such as masks mandate etc?

Yes, definitely a great time to go. Although it was still a bit cold when we arrived in March. To completely avoid cold weather maybe visit April-August. All our Estonian videos were filmed from March-September 2020. No one is wearing masks in Estonia they are respectful and give space, it was lovely and normal there. 😊

It only occurred to me now: in our culture a bird trapped inside a building is considered an ill omen. It could represent the soul of a deceased one unable or unwilling to leave the mortal coil. It is imperative to set the bird free, which is exactly what you did. A gesture highly symbolic, I think - now you yourselves were finally able to move on to other places, to new horizons.

Luckily Estonia and Finnish languages are very similar and I can already have a conversation with people in Estonian language!
