I lived in Buenos Aires Argentina for nearly 10 years. But this is one thing that no one seems to understand about Buenos Aires and Argentina in general that are many artists and crafts people and you can get beautiful hand made items from clothes to furniture at very very affordable prices and if you are not planning on a long stay you can have the items shipped back to your home country. For an example you can get a well tailored men's suit for around two or three hundred us dollars and that same suit in the United States will cost you 1500 dollars or more. And the leather goods are out of this world and again very very affordable 👌.

You can basically walk in any neighborhood in Buenos Aires and you will find stores selling hand made products from furniture to clothing but especially leather goods you will find high quality products at very affordable prices compared to the United States or Europe Santa Fe Avenue in Buenos Aires will be a good place to start I would avoid Florida Street because they cater to the tourist trade but this is my personal experience you will have to explore the situation for yourself once you are in Buenos Aires.

Hello there. As a tour guide in BA i have to thank you for the the nice things you say about our city. Unfortunately we are also harassed by "street people" but as locals we know how to get rid of them. I hope, in the near future, people will focus on the possitive and visit Buenos Aires. This is such a great overview of the things you loved and hated about Buenos Aires. I like how you called it BA for short - I have trouble pronouncing it too. I appreciate your honesty - it seems like the good definitely outweighs the negative, but it's always good to have a balanced look/evaluation of a place. I really loved that colourful are of the city, the food looks amazing and great that they do have veg options too. I'd be frustrated about the money situation and the hassling - but the gelato might help make me feel better haha.

Nomad here, just finished a stint of 3 months in BA - I do agree with the positives, but I don't think the cash thing is that much of a negative, considering its the reason BA is so incredibly cheap. Also, as far as the point about being hassled, just wait until the rest of South America lol, Argentina is as good as it gets, in the rest of SA it will be relentless (I remember the beaches in Cartagena, its literally impossible to enjoy yourself, every 10 seconds you get harrassed by some vendor). Same with police, the police presence will be even more noticeable elsewhere. I think seeing the rest of South America will put things in perspective - all of the bad in BA/Argentina is turned up 10x everywhere else on the continent
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for such a well thought out comment. We are mentally preparing (if that's even possible) for more hassle as we move around the continent. Part of the reason we chose Argentina as our first country was to sort of ease us in and also because we knew it was a country with so much to see! We are really looking forward to visiting Columbia but will be prepared for a lot of vendor hassle (thank you for the heads up). Yes the blue rate can be a benefit but we still have had a lot of conversations with other travellers along the way where they have mentioned the worry of carrying so much cash so we wanted to put it in this video as it's helpful for others to see the full picture, same with everything, we loved BA but we would have loved to have known a few of these things before arriving, so hopefully this will help others ☺
@franciscloutier5387
@franciscloutier5387 2 жыл бұрын
@@TideKnotTravellers I think it also depends where you go in Colombia, Cartagena was particularly bad on getting hassled but its also super touristy (still worth the visit, the old city is beautiful). In Medellin its not so bad. Similarly in Ecuador on the coast it could get annoying, but in Guayaquil (and I assume Quito, although I didnt visit) it was the same. Good luck on the rest of your travels, I'll be watching the vids!

I've been here for about a month now and I really love the cafe culture in BA. Around 6pm, everybody is out in cafes with their friends having cake and a coffee or even a glass of Malbec. I really appreciated how this was such a thing. Also, I found so many Colombian and Venezuelan cafes too where they have some traditional snacks as well as amazing coffee. As for the cash situation, I know someone who bought a smartphone here and they had to withdraw money from Western Union to buy it, and they only had 100 peso notes, which are worth about .38 cents at the moment. So he pretty much had to pay for it with 2000 bank notes 😅
@TideKnotTravellers

The coffee culture and the Malbec is just so nice. We loved it! Wow, it’s crazy when you go to get cash and they only have small notes left, we’ve had it a few times and you end up with piles of notes that look like a lot more money than they are. Buying a smartphone with 100 peso notes sounds hilarious, no wonder he needed thousands 😂

So great you found some good vegetarian food while you were there though! And wow, the ice cream looks amazing too! Love that you found a favorite ice cream stop while you were there haha sounds like something we would do too haha What's the population of BA? Yeah, traveling with that much cash on you would be really uncomfortable. And that's a shame you experienced such aggressive hassling. The only problem I have is that I am a vegan and Argentina is hardly vegan friendly. I already know that I want to live in Recoleta. Recoleta is the only place where it costs more to die there than to live there.😄

Thanks for honest opinions on Buenos Aires! That really helps us know what to expect. It's great that you got to spend so long there and expereince so many different districts. I had no idea the city was so big. So, do you have to pay for everything in cash or do places take credit card as well?

You can pay on credit card pretty much everywhere but as we showed in the ‘blue dollar’ video we made, you will not ever want to use your card as you’ll pay double for everything. 1USD = 104 pesos on the official rate, 1USD = 210 pesos with the blue dollar (cash)

The hassle thing also happens inside the restaurants, coffee shops and fast food venues. A few minutes after you sit down people come leaving pieces of paper, getting all in your business and insistently asking you for money. Many of them will try to get your belongings if you have them on your chair or table. One time my aunt was almost robbed by one these people. She noticed that he had put his cap on her phone. She sprung up and took his cap with her phone and shouted so much that he left.

The one time someone got aggressive I stood up angry and he decided that being at least a foot smaller than me and at least the weight of a small child, it would be safer leaving. That said, I've had this happen to me all over Argentina, usually a wag of the finger and no no no helped. Another tip is to never give any money to kid tramps, usually they are sent by either parents or adults who take their money for themselves.

I share the good and bad things you found about BA. Regarding the noise, it is because tourists choose the worst of Palermo, in the hipster area where delivery motorcycles pass by every 2 seconds, the music, many people on the streets, etc, You have better neighborhoods than Palermo, quieter,. As a native of Buenos Aires, I would never move to Palermo. Palermo is for eating, going to a cafe, shopping, but not for residing, you would have to have a lot of resistance to those excesses. The people who bother the tables outside the cafes are generally deranged people, mostly drug addicts. This is impossible to avoid, in European capitals it also happens and quite often, because they are more drug friendly. On the negative side, as every city has flaws, Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin, Stockholm, etc etc etc etc, you failed to mention a serious flaw, which is the dog po po. There are no perfect societies, each one has its madness. I was delighted that you liked Buenos Aires. And it is true as you say, to get to know BA you have to spend at least a month there. You are always welcome
