Tie Dye Geode Tapestry ~ the condensed version

Here is the shorter version of the Tie-Dye Geode Tapestry that I did a super long LIVE video of where I answered a bunch of questions, so you can watch either version, the other one is here : • Wednesday's with MrTie... It has all of the questions asked while I tied and ice dyed this tap.
for colors, I used Forrest Green, Sage, moss green, chocolate brown, truffle brown, bronze, and then I used a little bit of ultra violet and then I put some Aqua over top of the ice.

I too am all about letting the universe help me with placements and colors. I'll put up a blank and ask what it wants to be. I've never been an assembly line and I chose to offer my pieces as a one of a kind art piece. And, it can be dismal in the winter but I also choose to do all my work outside. Not sure how that came about but it's just how I roll. Thank you Carl for your positive video's and your spiritual spin on tie dye and life. ✌🏼❤🌈🥰

Thank you and you are welcome.... my motto is "Be the Change you Wish to see in the World" and for the geodes I have not tried just dye over ice yet, I like to add some dye directly to the tied geodes to make sure I get nice lines .... but as I play more with them i will be trying out some jut dye over ice and see what i get.... I love to experiment and yes we have been safe from the fires, we just has a lot of smoke and ash for a week, but with the rains, all of that is cleared up now... thank you

Have you ever used the melted ice water to make colored ice cubes to dye with? Would the dye be too faint if it were a white cloth?

no, the water/dye run off from an ice dye has soda ash in it so the dye is active and will not last long... you can try it, but yes I think the colors would be light BUT, one thing I have heard of dyers having success with is putting a tied tee or something in the bottom of the bin when doing an ice dye, so the dye/water drips out of one tee and into another one.... more random this way, but I have seen some good ones .... have fun in whatever you try and I wish you success!!

Thanks for Notified that I ever done The Geode ice dye pattern before. Okay so you still Have Bluebird of pound when the last time did you buy it? And did you still got Cerulean Blue for an pound from Dharma also?? How many Blues do you have?? 👕🌈💚

yes I have both of those, plus I think I still have a little bit of Brilliant Blue and Sapphire Blue... and then I have a full tub of Cobalt, which is similar to Navy ... and I have a baby blue are well

did you put more soda ash on top of the ice and a dark color?

Yes on this one I did add more soda ash over the ice at the end and I added some aqua, a lighter color just to try and cover the whole thing in the aqua color 😉✌🏻 I feel like I am still new to ice dyeing as I have done mostly liquid dyes over the years..... so I am still experimenting with ice dyeing and when and where I add the soda ash.... more recently I have started adding soda ash to my dye powders last time I used a 2 to 1 mix of soda ash to dye, but I heard from Justin Biffer, who does HWI, that his mix is 6 to 1 sod ash to dye powder so I will be trying that out next I hope this info helps, have fun creating!!

Have you tried zip ties to tie it up? I've heard zip ties can be super tight and leave white like the sinew does

I have not, but I have seen people who use them... I just worry about cutting them off without damaging the fabric when it is time to wash

Hey Mr. TieDye - question: does is matter if you put the dye directly on the fabric or on top of the ice? I’ve been dropping the dye on top of the ice and it seems to work.

nope, I do it both ways.... if you want more control over where the dye goes, say you tied a design and you want it in a certain color, then adding it to the fabric is better .... but over the ice is great to

I toss mine... I did try a couple times to re use it, but did not rinse it well enough so i had dye stains... but also, once the wax comes off, it does not lock in the same way so I decided to just use it once but I have heard of other dyers who reuse it

How do you get the 2 circles within the geode like that other piece?

do you mean this one : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJrGkISXituMocU the larger circle is made by gathering the large amount of fabric and tying around it... if you keep going up this column of fabric, you will make more circles within the geode... but if you want to have a couple circles that are within the geode, but not just a another smaller circle.... then you just gather a bit of fabric off on the side of the column and tie a couple circles and then continue up the column .... when you are done, you will have the long column with a couple small 'branches' sticking off to the side .... I hope that makes sense... I wish I could draw a picture here lol

yes it is... I would let it dry after you tie it and then just start dyeing... you can get even more creative with the rings and make them in rainbow colors or whatever you choose ... have fun

for those I do what I call an over dye... I re soak the tee in soda ash ( a separate bucket with just enough for the tee as some dye can leach out and you do not want to spoil a whole bucket ) ... then I tie it tightly with sinew (normally this would leave white lines, but on a dyes tee, it leaves colorful lines) and then dye it with black or a dark color kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYGskGVprJt9obs
