The ecru is a good blender and color enhancer. I would love to see this in a lapis/blue pallet. If you are comfortable using sinew, this shirt isn't a difficult design. In fact, the messier you tie your geodes, the better they look. You just need to make sure and get your sinew nice and tight so that you have the definition lines. I have quite a few other geode shirts on my channel. Thank you! Ecru is a beige dye that splits with a slight hint of green/gray. It doesn't add much color, but I use it to fill in any blank spaces and add some depth to geodes. Are you using sinew for your ties? I think using a sinew puller helps a lot too. I have smaller hands and the sinew puller helps me get a better grip so that I can pull really hard. I keep pulling until I feel the sinew catch and tighten down on itself. The lines need to be right on top of each other too for them to tighten properly.

Hi! This is beautiful and inspiring. I have a question about the ice. I've seen people put the powder dye on top of the ice before as well, have you tried that also? I wonder what the difference would be..
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes, I ice dye by adding the dye over the top of the ice too sometimes. I find that adding the dye before adding the ice gives me a little better control over where I place the dye. In my opinion, adding the dye first also gives a more defined look to the dye. I think the shirt has more of a watercolor look when the dye is added over the top of the ice. It just depends on the look that you are going for. One of my first videos that I posted was a comparison of the two methods. Here is a link to that video if you'd like to see it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXjVfYKefMakm6c

So you don't "muck" your shirt, which I take to mean: "let it sit in the offrun of liquid?" Am I right in seeing that you let the water run through?
@FunEndeavors

I didn't muck dye this one. The rack allowed the runoff to go through the shirt. You're right, muck is the runoff from the melted ice mixed with the dye.

Hi! The video is great, but I have a question. I did it, and after washing the color dulls a bit, how can I make the color look good?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
If the color is dulling - it could either be the dye that you are using (I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes), or you might not be allowing it to process long enough at a high enough temperature for the dye to properly react with the fabric. I usually leave my shirts for 24 hours at a temperature of over 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Should you always check the back to possibly add more die?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Unless a shirt is processing in the "muck" - I do normally turn the shirt over to make sure the dye came through to the back side. In this case, I went ahead and added more dye to the back. However, I rarely do anymore. I usually add the dye a little thicker to the front side of the shirt and then add another layer of ice to the top to force more of the dye through the shirt. Occasionally though I will have to turn the shirt over and add an additional layer of dye and ice to the back.

Any tips on how to get those white geode lines? I’m new to all this. Bought some dharma dyes, sinew, soda ash etc. I mainly do the ice dyes. I like those best. The shirts come out awesome. But it’s like some of the dyes seep threw the sinew even though I wrap it extremely tight. So it doesn’t show all the lines.. 😒 thanks for any info
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's easier to get the sinew lines really tight if the shirt is slightly damp when I tie it. I can compress the fabric easier and pull the sinew tighter. I also use a sinew puller which helps me get a good grip to pull. I have smaller hands and I always had a tough time getting the sinew really tight just using the roll of sinew to pull with. I've seen tie dyers use a variety of things for sinew pullers - it doesn't necessarily have to be fancy. It also helps to allow the shirt to fully dry before applying the dye. When the shirt dries, it tightens up around the sinew. To make your lines more pronounced, you can add some additional wraps of sinew to make them a little wider.

Did you have to replenish the ice over the time?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I usually check the shirt after the first layer melts. If there is still quite a bit of undissolved dye sitting on top of the shirt, I add another layer of ice. Since I rack dyed this shirt, I could also look on the back side and make sure the dye came through to the back side. If there are white areas on the back I can either add more ice to see if I can force more dye through to the back, or I can flip the shirt and add dye to the back side too. I tend to be heavy handed with the dye though so I usually don't have to flip a geode and add more dye to the back.

I have the dye color ivory from Dharma. Is that like Ecru - like an off white? I wondered what to do with it. How did you make up your color swatches? with ice? or did you mix up a small batch of each color?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
I have the Ivory as well. On my color swatches, the Ivory is kind of a light yellow. Where the Ecru is more of a taupe color. I hope that makes sense. KZbin won't let me post photos on comments - sorry. I took a piece of white cotton fabric and I cut it into squares. When I get a color that is new I mix up that color (liquid), and just write the name of the color in the corner of a square of the fabric with Sharpie, soak it in soda ash, then I put the square into a small ziploc bag and squirt a little of the dye on top and process like normal. I use the swatches all the time when I'm choosing the colors for a shirt.

@FunEndeavors

Thank you so much! I add the additional soda ash just to make sure that when the ice melts and runs through the shirt, it doesn't wash out too much of the original soda ash from the soaking process. On ice dyed shirts, I will sometimes add several layers of ice.

@@openbelt6019 that could be. I wrap the sinew around an area a couple of times and then pull it really tight until I feel it lock and tighten down on the area. Dumb question but when you wash the shirt before anything do you use any detergent or softener? Please educate this beginner🙏
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
I wash the shirt initially in hot water and a little Dharma's Textile Detergent or Synthrapol. This helps to get out any of the sizing or other chemicals that may be in the shirt from the manufacturing process. Then I dry the shirt without using Fabric Softener - I don't want the shirt to have any kind of a coating on it from the fabric softener that would interfere with the dyeing process. When I am ready to dye the shirt, I soak it in a soda ash solution for at least 20-30 minutes and wring it out until it is barely damp before I begin tying it. To get better saturation into the middle of the geode folds, I usually allow the shirt to dry completely after it is tied before I begin applying the dye.

You can also use blue Dawn dishwashing detergent if you're just experimenting. If you use dryer sheets, DO NOT dry the shirts in the dryer before dyeing. Let them dry on the line. Dryer sheets will leave a residue on the inside of the dryer that can get on the shirts.

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Did you start tying from the bottom? When I start tying from the top or the middle of the geode, it is really easy to make it more of a bullseye shape. If you started from the bottom and it still ended up like a bullseye - when I start to get close to the end or the middle of the geode I kind of mess with the middle area by pushing in some of the fabric and try to make it messy. This is truly a design that looks much better the messier your fold is. If the shirt is too wrinkle free and perfect it doesn't look as natural.

I have an immersion blender that I use, but I keep it with my tie dye supplies. You can use your regular dryer to dry your finished shirts in after they have been dyed and washed. The Panda Spin Dryer that I use isn't really a dryer though. It spins the water out of the shirts and leaves them barely damp. It's really a machine that does only the spin cycle like is on your washing machine. The advantage of my Panda Spin Dryer is that there is a spout on the front where the soda ash solution that is being spun out of the shirts can drain into a container. I pour the soda ash that is spun off back into my soda ash solution bucket and keep reusing it. It also doesn't have a heating element.
