Sorry couldn’t spell- I hate texting and well, it was late. Your videos and tips means so much. I am now volunteering with a veterans group once a month for a full week. Will h doing classes on tye dye … working with disabled veterans, caregivers and family. Doing some photography classes, painting, journaling… not one veteran- family member or care support person pays to go to this which I experience for the first time this past spring. Truly an amazing place. And now I get to give back beings a graduate of digital media - major in photography- wildlife/portraits… and of corse the arts- having fun tye dying. This shirt is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for your video's, I really enjoy them. I'd love to try this as well, but I have one question: do you wear a dust mask when using the dye powder, or is it safe to do this without one?

Thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. Yes, I wear a respirator with P100 filters when I use dye and dry soda ash. I personally wouldn't use them without a mask. The dyes are so fine and they really shouldn't be inhaled. Soda ash is an irritant as well and so I wear my respirator when handling the soda ash too.

With the soda ash, I sprinkle it on but also mist the ice with liquid soda ash as well. Usually if I apply ice more than once. It seems to work great. Thanks for the video.

So pretty! Why do you soak it with Dawn detergent?

I use Blue Dawn dish soap for the soaking process in place of textile detergent. It is pH neutral and so it helps keep any dye that was soaked out of the shirt from re-bonding on the shirt. I recently went more in depth about my rinse process in one of my videos. The rinse process starts about 7:32 into the video. Thank you so much! I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes for ice and liquid dyeing. I mix the dye powder with water to use for liquid dyeing, or I sprinkle the dye powder on and add ice for ice dyeing. Since most dye colors are a mixture of several colors, when I use the powder to ice dye - the dye colors split into the colors used to make the dye. These color splits give the shirt variety in their coloring and the ice dyeing gives a more mottled/watercolor effect to the shirt. The dye mixed into a liquid has a more solid color.

Excellent video and your instructions and tips are fabulous. I have made regular tie dye but this certainly is next level! Soooo I accidentally ordered and used urea instead of ecru. Can I expect anything to happen?

Thank you so much - I'm glad you like it! Did you sprinkle the Urea on top? It probably won't affect your shirt at all, but I haven't ever used it directly on a shirt - I always dissolve it in my liquid dye. Urea is used to help keep the fabric from drying out during the dyeing process.

@@FunEndeavors i did put it on top of the ice. The shirts came out amazing! I also used an old dish rack to fit the shirt into the separate sections and created walls to hold the ice with plastic shelving cut into strips. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INSPIRATION!!

Absolutely! If you don't have the exact colors I used that's fine. I usually try to do a good mix of darker and lighter blues and then add in a light neutral color like ecru to fill in the gaps. On this particular shirt I used a combination of teal shades, but you can change those to more traditional blue shades if that's what you have.

Can you please give me a suggestion on how to tie the sleeves on a long sleeve t-shirt I’ve struggle with how to make them part of the pattern.. they mostly end up scrunched.. thanks

Hi! Most of the time I try to work the sleeves into the rest of the shirt. For geodes, I usually continue a geode down onto the sleeve area so that it doesn't look like the sleeves are different from the shirt, but instead just an extension of the shirt/design. Then I tie geodes on the sleeves as well. I try to keep them large though like I did on the rest of the shirt. @@darlaliles4295 I prefer using powdered dye to ice dye geodes. I love the color splits and the color variations. I think it helps to make the geodes look more realistic.

The fiber reactive dye that I use only works on natural fibers. It can be used on cotton, viscose and rayon.

So I’m getting nervous. Because I just bought 15 - 2oz jars from Dharma and my plan is to geode dye a queen sheet set and duvet cover… Is 2oz not enough powder ? I mean I can do multiple different colors. But it looks like you buy the big tubs, how much powder do you go through?

If you are using several colors, you will probably be fine with 2 ounce containers. The Glacier Blue and Ecru that I used were in 8 ounce containers, but the rest of the containers I used were 2 ounces. There is quite a bit of dye in each (each is a little different depending on the color since they are sold by weight).
