I use a wire basket on top of a rack that I put my shirts in to ice dye. The wire grid is small enough that the ice doesn't fall through, but it lets the water fall into the pan below the rack.

Absolutely beautiful, HOWEVER, a bit of advice from the viewing side.....Your video was 13:16 long but sadly, you barely let us see the results!! W only had a few seconds (10 to be exact) to look at it all and there is so much detail in the shirt and various areas and aspects to look at!! I had to rewind and pause it! BUT, when creating the shirt, you took all that time showing us how to tie each and EVERY section without even speeding up the video, so after the first 2 I became bored & had to fast-forward. Again, AMAZING shirt!! Thought you might welcome the feedback!

That's usually what I do. I soak several shirts at a time, tie them and then set them aside to allow them to dry.

Thank you! Yes, you can use liquid dye. It won't have the same watercolor type effect though.

Does it look quite different putting the dye under the ice instead of over? And what does the extra sprinkle of soda ash do on top of the dye under the ice?

It gives me more control over where the dye goes to put the dye under the ice. I also think that it gives a bit more definition to the shirt. I think over the ice gives the shirt a less defined look and a more watercolor feel. Some tie dyers claim that putting the dye over the ice yields more color splits. The extra soda ash is just to make sure when the ice melts and runs through the shirt, it doesn't rinse out all the original soda ash from the soda ash soak.

You can, but you won't have the white lines in the geodes. You might be able to tighten down the rubber bands enough to get the white lines, but it will be a bit harder without the sinew.

Why do you dry it after washing it? I’ve always just tie dyed straight after washing it in Sosa ash. Also what brand dyes do you use please?

I usually let them dry after folding and tying them so that they get better color saturation. On thick folds like this one, if the shirt is too damp, it is difficult to get good dye saturation. The fabric fibers are already full of soda ash water and so they aren't as eager to soak up the dye as dry fibers are. I used Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes from Dharma Trading Company on this shirt. Yes, I do. I use the same Procion Fiber Reactive dye to ice dye that I use when I liquid dye.

what is the white Stuff you are putting on right before the ice? salt? or white color powder?

It is soda ash or sodium carbonate. Soda ash raises the pH and helps bond the dye to the fabric. I soak the shirt in a soda ash solution before I tie it. Then I add a bit of dry soda ash to the top to make sure there is plenty in the shirt after all of the ice melts.

If the fabric is presoaked in soda ash, why do you sprinkle more on top of the dye?

Since the soda ash is necessary for the dye to properly react with the fabric, I add it just in case as the ice is melting and running through the shirt, too much of the soda ash from my original soak gets washed out.

This is really nice. I loved that you kept the color so subtle and still let a little color split come into it. Is there any reason why tie dyers don't use foil with ice dyes? I cut up deep strips of foil and fold them to about five inches deep and as long as I need, and it works great with hemostats and is reusable, but no one I have seen uses them. What do I not know.

Thank you! I used to use foil, but I thought I would try the cake molds for this shirt. They looked like a much bigger mess than they really were. I've used them a lot since this shirt, and I absolutely love them. I bought some clothes pins and I've been using them on my rack to keep the cake molds in place. The hemostats damage the coating on my rack and so I don't like using those. The cake molds clean up so easily too. I've pretty much been using them non-stop for my ice dyes. The foil works great too - I know of several other dyers who use foil. It's nice to be able to use on the unusual shaped dyes.

Is there a reason you tie whilst damp? Can you let it dry flat and then tie it up?

I think that it is easier to manipulate the fabric into various folds when it is damp. After a shirt that has been soaked in soda ash dries, it gets kind of stiff and difficult to work with.

Definitely a Yes! They are great for ice dyeing. I have used them for several spirals and they are so helpful. I had my tub on a table to apply the dye, but after I put it on the ground I was able to brace dye bottles filled with water around them to keep them in place. I just got back from the store a little while ago and I bought some clothespins to try to keep the molds in place. I ordered a couple sets of the cake molds, and I'm glad that I did because it takes quite a few for a geode.

No, soda ash is sodium carbonate and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. If you are in the United States, you can usually find Arm and Hammer's washing soda which is sodium carbonate (soda ash) in the laundry aisle at your local store.

@@donnamarie7252 most of the colors from this shirt I purchased from Dharma Trading Company. However, I also purchase from Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes and Prochemical and Dye. They are all great companies that sell the same kind of dye (Procion Fiber Reactive Dye). There has been a bit of a shortage of certain colors of dye for the last several months. So lately I usually purchase from whoever has the most colors that I need available.
