It was so funny how little food you were taking when you were talking about how you have to pretend you’re not hungry!

I really wish I could live in Vietnam, Im a 15 year old Mỹ Trắng who lives in OKLAHOMA and I so dearly wish to be around Vietnamese people and their culture, and food. I dont know how to tell you how much I appreciate these videos, you guys always give me a little taste of what its like. There are a lot of Vietnamese people here!! So it really helps to know some more table manners. If I ever go to Vietnam I am going to have to visit you guys!! cảm ơn!!!!❤️

It's true in America...at home I can enjoy my meal in a relaxed manner, but at a restaurant, people get uptight, grouchy, and make unreasonable demands that I put my pants back on.

This is amazing! Thank you for sharing =) I am pretty fluent with my listening skills but to see the words and how they are pronounced clearly really helps with my comprehension and proficiency in Vietnamese. Also, learning about the customary table manners is wonderful for when I decide to go back and visit for a long time! Em cam on rat nhieu!

Good to know! In my experience, America is much more casual even when eating out with family. We wait for everyone’s food to arrive but don’t wait for our elders to eat first. Our food isn’t typically communal so many of these table manners shown aren’t necessary.

Very interesting. Still remains one question :as I staid in Vietnam, when eating at someone's home, why do they choose pieces from the dishes to put in my bowl? What I 'm supposed to do or say in these circumstances?

when you eat at someone;s home they have been cooking specially for you. Knowing that you do not know the dishes or that you're to shy to try, they will put the food in your bowl. in general are foreigners much bigger than Vietnamese, being polite we will not eat more than they do; when they see that they will asume that you haven't eaten enough. in case it is not obvious what the food is, you take just a tiny little bit to try..however, there are certain ways to handle the possible eating problems: - you tell your friends before you visit them what kind of things you do not eat; - when this isn't possible and you see meat you do not want to eat, tell them you're Buddhist and this month you're not allow to eat meat (however some meat is just vegetable): - it also works when you explain that you drink medicine (they drink medicine, not eat) and because of them you cannot eat everything; - but the very best is to go with a Vietnamese friend, or sit next to a Vietnamese friend you know very well: they will not only explain what the food is, will have a nice story for the family that gives you the food, they can limit the amount and when you discover you really do not like it they will "steal" it from you because they like it so much.. Although the income of most Vietnamese has increased, some families still spend a lot of money on the dish ..often the whole monthly budget. So when you stop eating they will push you to eat more but when you don't do that they might look sad but it means they have more food for the coming days... Of course you cannot leave money, but when they have children..they love usefulsurprise gifts ... In the Vietlish Dictionay you can find more tips..

@stevenherrell66684 жыл бұрын

Are men expected to be as modest when they eat out? I'm guessing not 😕
@nadyanguyen35004 жыл бұрын
I would say the expected behaviors are up to where you are and who you’re eating with, not your genders, but probably some women do try to be a bit more elegant 😄
