Just calculating the 1968 appraisal and adjusting for inflation it should be worth $9,500 and this guy is saying the intrinsic value hasn't went up in 50 years? I think he's way off for a Patek Philippe / Tiffany's & Co watch in that condition as old as it is. I think at auction it would go for upwards of 15K but he's the expert

That didn’t go up value whatsoever... it’s the same value as it was it 1968, purchased for $1,250. Due to inflation, that would cost $9,124 in today’s dollars. It did not increase in value at all. It only remained it’s value since 1968.

Unique pieces like this are hard to appraise and are rarely the sum of the appraisal of the elements they are made of... this is why you will always see them sell at wildly different prices at auction than appraisal, and value will come from the history of the piece rather than what it is made of... Whats more, they will wildly vary from one auction to another depending on who is bidding at the time .. that being said, i think he was generous in his appraisal of this one, because it has no particular historical significance (i.e. owned by someone important, or was made for special edition or occasion, or was one of a kind, etc). Also if you estimate the amount of gold, platinum in it, its not much, so that shouldn't factor in big, its not particularly a heavy piece...so now we come to the diamonds and pearls...this will depend on the size and quality...and no one here can tell by just looking at the video...and finally, a pre-owned Patek can be had for as low as $2500, so that also shouldn't bump up the price unless it has an iconic movement or something... overall there isn't one thing standing out of extremely high value, but overall a good quality jewellery that's antique and is probably worth 8-10 grands

For those wondering why the watch isn’t worth more. Yes, it’s a Patek Philipe, but the problem is that it’s a women’s-sized watch and it’s a pendant watch. Men’s watches, especially wristwatches, are much more valuable.

When you think about it it almost looks like it lost some value 1250 dollars in 60's is worth more than 10k in today's money
@altair1983
@altair1983 7 жыл бұрын
or that it was accurately assessed initially :) thou, truth to be told, it's is very difficult to say how much money that would be today. i wouldn't say it lost value, more like it kept value well -the nature of the things is that in general (almost) everything looses value (heck, it's old!). I like when people say how much they paid initially (if they paid) and how much was that back then-in real money. (there was an example of soldier saying his rolex cost him about 20% more than his monthly wage in 1960s, which roughly give-or-take is what you would pay for rolex now.
@DJogdog
@DJogdog 6 жыл бұрын
In ~1960 a new Rolex Submariner or GMT Master would run you around ~$100USD, today that amount is equal to ~$870USD. (I think a Submariner would have been 5 - 10 bucks cheaper, so my estimate is the mean between the two) A new Submariner or GMT Master in SS today would be ~$10,000 USD (GMT Master is more expensive than Subby).

I am amazed how many comments are suggesting this piece is worth more... for it to be worth more it has to either have some history, or was the only one made of its kind, or has some big high quality diamonds... but being vintage or antique by itself will not warrant significant value without it being rare or had been owned or made for someone important... looking at this piece...its light weight so the gold and platinum in it won't probably exceed 1-2 grands...the pre-owned patek can be as low as 2 grands unless it was one of their top movements...and the diamonds + pearls here don't seem to be of rarity or size that warrant more than 2-3 grands...so my guess is, his appraisal is fair if not generous...but then all of that doesn't matter because at auction if two people with deep pockets want it bad enough, through that appraisal out of the window

Oh, boo. The appraisal in 1960 was $1,250. In 2022 dollars that's $12,661.99. So even at the high appraisal price of $10,000 this guy gave, there's been a loss of almost $3,000 dollars in value. It's a stunning piece of jewelry from Tiffany's and a watch made by Patek Philippe. I was expecting a lot more than $12,660.

The price is underestimated. It is not possible to buy a pattek philippe for $8k. Also, $1250 at the time when gold was at $35/oz is now (2018) worth $46k. That $46k is the real value of the watch.

@Obama Oh Yeah Yeah you can get a great condition calatrava at almost any reputable classic/vintage watch dealer for 6 and 7k ... and it is a timeless dress watch and a very sought after model... DavidSW has at the moment an unworn patek twenty-4 with the works "box/papers/warranty" for 10.5k ..crown&caliber have several for 8k or under.. i am just puzzled, given the research you have done, that you think 8k can only get you a broken in pieces patek, when almost every reputable dealer has few listed in excellent condition at the price range i mentioned give or take...

Soooooo....it’s worth the same as it was in 1968...$1 in 1968 = $7.30 today...$7.30 X $1250 = ?....I let you do the math but it’s actually worth less today🤔
