@thierryhenry6742 жыл бұрын
@@seadkolasinac7220 Arteta is not the finish article, he still has areas to improve. One advantage he has, is that he has learned from Pep. A tactical mastermind who calculate and rehearse every single scenario on the pitch. Playing football like a chess game, a tactical engineer. And because of this, his players knows exactly where their teammates are, where the spaces are in different situations without even looking, they know exactly what to do in different phases of the game a few steps ahead. Arteta might have learned management, communication, mentality...from Wenger. But for the tactical side which actually influence the game directly, I have to say it’s mostly from Pep. English manager tends not like to do too much tactics. They don’t believe those detailed calculations will work. Gerrard learned mostly from benitez and rodgers from his playing days. And benitez was just a defensive manger that throws 8-9 man at the back and ask 2-3 players to go forward doing their thing. He was barely a tactical genius that calculates everything. So I believe gerrard learned the most of his tactics from rodgers. A fairly good manager but not a tactical mastermind.

I think a big problem that a lot of fans are talking about is that McGinn and Ramsey are both very attacking 8s, who could potentially play better as a 10, and are also very similar in style. Playing alongside a cool head like Luiz or Kamara completely nullifies that calming influence with the constant buzzing play of McGinn and Ramsey. Add to this that we are playing two attacking 8s in behind two attacking 10s that all like to be central, and we've got a third of the pitch completely locked down and two thirds of the pitch marshalled by Digne and Cash alone, who are now also both injured, along with Dignes replacement Augustinsson. I just think it's a fun tactic in principle but it doesn't work in the modern game and at a high level. Gerrard seems keen to blame everyone but himself and his stupid team selections and formation. He's even gone as far as to out players and the assistant manager he brought in over the summer in post-match interviews. He's made us much more defensively sound but that screams of a manager who knows he is on his last legs I believe.
@cav67172 жыл бұрын
This seems fair, especially the point on McGinn and Ramsey since it has been evident for how long now that they just don’t work together. On their positions, I think if you asked them both their best role they would both say no.8 but the lack of balance in the midfield three Gerrard plays is so noticeable in almost every game. I can’t believe he hasn’t changed things up considering how good a midfielder he was! For me Ramsey has shown this season that he can do both sides of the game and whilst McGinn is out of form it should be him, Luiz and one other (unfortunate Kamara injury as he’d be perfect here). I do have some sympathy for him because the injuries have all been to key players and signings but some decisions he seems to be shooting himself in the foot with, like not playing Buendia when he looks our brightest spark and not giving Ings/Archer a decent run in the side when Watkins couldn’t hit a barn door.

good points, but i think that ten hag plays in a way where a lot of players are central and playing between the lines and in the half spaces. A bit similar to what youre talking about. where did Mark Carey and Maram go? I know they work at The Athletic but why are they never on camera anymore?
@nickdcarver2 жыл бұрын
The crux of the problem for Gerrard is that he brought a system of play with him that relied on having two of the best full-backs in the league in order to work. In Cash and Digne you have one full-back who can defend pretty well (Cash) and one who can be productive in attack (Digne) but neither player has both skillsets. Having realized that Plan A is never going to work (unless he can spend 100 million plus on two new players) Gerrard has gone ultra-defensive in order to minimize the chances conceded (and save his job in the short-term). But there's no future playing this way as Villa don't have the players to be a counter attacking team and so will likely crawl their way to 40 points and then end up sacking Gerrard after survival is achieved. I'm not convinced by Gerrard for a multitude of reasons (tactical inflexibility, poor in-game decision making, lack of enthusiasm, treatment of players, interaction with the media, etc.) and I think that if there's a better alternative out there who's available then the board should act now rather than allowing another season to drift by. If European football is the goal, Steven Gerrard is not the manager to achieve it for Aston Villa. Whether European qualification is a realistic target with this squad is questionable, but a better manager could certainly be achieving more with this group of players than Gerrard currently is.
