awesome video Jody! I am 3 years into my career outside trade school and watching your videos really gave me the advantage i needed to get out of structural work and into welding "exotic alloys". something i think would help someone early in their career is a video on the various shielding gases and their effects on the welding processes (ie helium, argon, nitrogen, 98/2 oxygen mixes, CO2)

Thank you this helped. We should of used aluminum backing when welding. It came out sugar on both sides. Why? I think maybe we didn't prep the ss good enough. Used acetone and wiped i think we should of brushed the areas clean ontop of that.

Jodi, I need to make a stainless box out of 0.125" 316L stainless and all welds would be outside, open corner joints. This box would be subjected to constant submersion in salt water and rough treatment, I need the welds to be rugged, and I do not want the welds to granulate or corrode. Purging with argon on the back side would not be possible without making multiple custom fixtures. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you

I’m in welding school right now and I have had more help from Jody than my instructor. I just started stainless steel. I noticed when dabbing my filler wants to stick and moves my workpiece. Im not sure what kind of stainless steel we have because it’s scrap donated to us. It doesn’t look like what you’re using. This looks as if it’s got a nickel finish. What do you think?

Hey Jodi a little off subject but i was at work today welding up stainless railings doing some laywire and i was wondering have you or could you do a penetration test between laywire and dabbing? Not specifically on stainless but any material. Obviously when dabbing you can see the root puddle up but ive always been curious to know how deep i was getting when running over the wire. Thank you sir.

Just FYI -- purging and shielding with Argon is excellent, cause it will work for many materials and keep you versatile... -- for Stainless there is an alternative though, purge with Nitrogen/Hydrogen mix (Arcal F10), best results when you also shield with Argon/Hydrogen mix (Arcal10). It allows for lower amps at same travel speeds cause it fiddles with the surface tension of the weld pool on both sides; as well as the neat effect of the hyrdogen binding up any weird oxy that might pop up out of the material (at least that is how i understand the tech stuff i heard about it) -- also, i think it might be cheaper if you got a lot of stainless to work through. Results may vary, it takes some getting used to - but i really like it. Air Liquide has it i think, do not now about across the pond (European here, not a rep for AL, just some overtime ridden fabricator doing pipe puzzles all day) Nice video again Jody. Someday i can do my USA tour and i will make sure to at least knock around your area too.

??!! Do you mean for backing, or actually going through the torch, or both? This sounds like it should be very energetic and also a little reducing. We want to hear more! If this is going through the torch, how does the tungsten feel about it?
@precisionarc
@precisionarc 6 жыл бұрын
This is the shielding gas, no problem with the tungsten
@planeswalking
@planeswalking 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is reducing. Which is why it would be 145 instead of 141 GTAW. Since you still have plenty of argon in the shielding gas the tungsten feels just fine. Unless you run zero postflow but who would do such a thing? By running reducing mixes on the outside and inside you get maximum goodness on stainless. However, you can't just switch to AC and do some quick Aluminum if you got the Ar/H hooked up. I mean, you can obviously - it won't be pretty though... Not sure if it is beneficial for mild steel, but i got the odd piece on the table here and there (curse you ST235JR) and it runs just fine.

Love your videos, I just picked up a tig. I've been watching videos of people welding turbo manifold and stuff like that. I see in some videos they plug the ends and run a hose to it, why is this done? I didn't know how to word it to find my answer on Google, thanks!

To back purge the weld. Thin stainless is prone to sugaring and a back purge eliminates that by shielding the inside from atmospheric oxygen.

My welds on stainless are neat but always have the grey/black burnt look not the nice cleans colours yours have. Is it too much heat/too slow travel or not enough argon?
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
could be all 3 or a mixture of any 2 ..... if you are using a gas lens and you weld shorter runs (long runs can also take some shielding away) and even short runs get grey/black then a gas issue is less likely ... typically I see people moving the torch too slow (insufficient travel speed) sometimes - less likely but also possible too high amperage right out the gate ... but more common even too low amperage and then a way too slow travel speed to make up for the lack of amperage ..... and then it happens - the point where most guys just cook it...

As always Jody, great content!! Is there a way to back purge with using just a single bottle of gas and a "single flow" meter.?? Do you think a Y junction in the gas pipe is a viable option? I suspect it might work in a pinch, but then your CFH reading on the guage would be inaccurate. Any suggestions?
@planeswalking
@planeswalking 6 жыл бұрын
it will work in a pinch, especially when it's just a backpurge for a quick corner joint - but let's say you wanna purge some small diameter heavy wall pipe and then the pressure inside will make your root pass fall back on you very easily. the trick to purge is to give it enough push towards the arc so it will get nice and flush to the sides, but not too much so it will undercut on the backside. edit: i guess a 2nd Y after the fact might be able to lower the flowrate on the purge line, but you'd be blowing argon or similar into your shop for free just to do that. edit2: yes i am not Jody, Would love to see what he thinks. Just in a helpful (maybe) mood.

This sounds a little desperate, but if you had a valve or a hose-pinch-clamp on the back purge line.... Seems like you could set that flow on your flowmeter, then trigger the welder and set THAT flow on top. So you might set that 10cfm with the welding machine off, and then (say) 25cfm total with the welding gas flowing. We used to have little clamps that pinched a rubber hose to control flow, it's a laboratory thing. They're not fancy, there's a little screw to adjust how hard you squeeze the tubing. You could probably use a little "c" clamp or machinist kind of parallel jaw clamp. Or make a quick trip to the hardware store, and find some little valve and two hose barb to npt fittings? This should work!

Why your electrode so big for fifty amps? I keep asking people this. Don't you get easier start and easier everything with like .040 (1mm) electrode? It's cheaper and easier to grind. Also, reminding you that "Weldmonger" trademark is loose on eBay, might be some infringing going on there.
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
the arc initiates of the tip of the tungsten - a properly ground tungsten that is clean ignites easily no matter if it is .040 or .125 also some kinds of tungsten ignite easier than others ... 2% ceriated for example ignites real easy where E4 does not
@ryanjones9305
@ryanjones9305 6 жыл бұрын
+ZILA I agree. Plus a larger electrode is easier to dress down and is more stable, to me at least. I have some .040 tungsten and hate having to sharpen them. I'd rather dress down a 3/32 or even a 1/8.
