I drove for a total of 7 years before retirement. Two years flatbed for TMC and five years dry van. The biggest difference was dry van drivers would not give you the right time of day. Flatbed drivers no matter gender always helped one another with tarps, strapping, etc. A great brotherhood and sisterhood of being flatbeders.

Interesting observation, Brian. I drove flatbed for the last 7 years of my work life. Maybe it's because, no matter what the public perception, people do like to help others and seeing newer flatbeders on the job offers lots of opportunities to pass on helpful tips and techniques.

@ BRB Another tip ... don't throw your straps like a football. use the "hook shot" method. you know basketball. easier for me anyways when you have a 13'6" or taller load.

Hi there. For tarp folding when you are by yourself you can try securing one end of the tarp with a clip to the ground and pulling the other end by hand, wait always for the weather window and do it without rain. nice video, great job, much better than average 9 to 5 grind. If you use/wind straps often I would get a battery powered drill and a Bumble Bee Strap winder. Makes winding straps a 15 minute job and will save your wrists.

The "not throwing them on the ground" just comes as you get older and picking stuff up off the ground becomes harder to do. Old saying, "Work smarter, not harder." You said he has been driving since 2007. I didn't drive all the time, but I have had my chauffeurs/CDL since 1978. Ask Jona for my email, then send me yours. I can drop you some info once in awhile.

Girl take good care of your back. Bending over is okay but the less you can do it the better. I have done so many hard jobs in my life it took it's toll on my back and I'm now disabled from a back injury at work with Cat. As a young man I worked for an ambulance service for many year and we had to lift the cots from the ground up, not like all these slide in cots they have today. Late on as a pipefitter my coworker and I like to be able to do work without help. We would pickup and carry full lengths of 6 inch steel pipe. Hard work took it's toll on my back and I'm sure part of why I got hurt when I was only 43 and done working for life, Not fun to live in pain every day and not be able to enjoy so much of life. So please do what you can to protect your back. Hard work is good on the mind and body just use your brain

You should find a trucker that can show you how to fold your tarps using tarp straps and the trailer... basically the tarp will fold itself! so much easier than all you have to do is roll it up

I drove for a total of 12 and a half years before my retirement from a health issue. I did a total 3 years of flat bed with a local company called Tryon trucking and when I was an owner operator I did flat bed for a year running regional. When I was at Tryon trucking I pulled a covered wagon cause I mainly hauled steel coils. It was easy work and fast loading and unloading. It was easy work.

Customers like that need to have driver refuse to deliver and maybe they would make it better. I've had places where I had to lock the diff in just to get the truck to climb a hill side because they needed you out of the way of the only dock they had. And one place decided to not pave around their building where the tankers unloaded so they had to park a bull dozer there to pull you out when it rained. So many places do not care about drivers being able to get into them. One place we would go in Chicago they had the scale in the middle of the street and just enough room to get a truck around each side of it. Plus that place would not let you in the building to even use the restroom because it was full of illegals that worked there. Tell me nobody knew who worked there.
