I just started learning to tie this style of fly very recently. This video was the easiest to follow and looks fantastic.

Aww man you were at the DSR and I didn’t get to meet you?? I’m one of the Douglaston Salmon Run’s river patrol and walk that section of river all the time, it would have made my week to get to meet my fly tying inspiration in person! Either way I’m glad you had a successful trip and what an amazing pattern! I’m not surprised, you and Jay Peck are the best in your fields so magic was bound to happen!

That tip about using the hackle pliers on the loop is so useful. Going to use that for all my composite loops from now on.

Thanks Tim!! Great explanation, details and tips - as usual! Started using "Intruder" style flies (primary for Smallmouth Bass), swinging in rivers and stripping in lakes this summer with excellent results. In addition to bass, I caught a lot of pike and a number of walleyes on the bigger flies as well as a variety of panfish (crappies, rockbass and perch) on the smaller versions. Great all around pattern whether tied to imitate the local forage or in bright colors as an attractor.

since I don't have enough money to afford expensive materials for fly tying so I often use guinue fowl and ostrich feathers since both birds are common here in south africa, I also use coloured tennis ball fibers as "dubbing" and use pipe cleaners as chenile lol. I also use very crappy craft feathers as "marabou"

You were in my neck of the woods. I live in a little town about 15 minutes from douglaston. I grew up and went to school in pulaski. We used to live on the same road that selkirk lighthouse is on.

Awesome video, as usual Tim. If you were going to specifically target Steelhead and Browns in November and later, would you downsize the fly a little? Thanks Tom

In fairness, steelhead and browns eat some pretty big streamers, so I think it would work fine, if you haven't used it already in two years, lol!!

I used to stay at the Port Lodge in Pulaski when working shutdowns at Nine Mile Or Fitzpatrick and I would see lots of fishermen. Unfortunately I didn’t get into fly fishing until a few years later

Tim..have you tried this on a tube? It would allow hook size changes.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 3 жыл бұрын
I'm getting there with tying tube flies but not quite confident enough in my knowledge and skills to tie one on video but I hope to soon. In terms of changing hooks, it is actually easy to do with the fly tied in this video. The wire loop is long enough that the hook can be backed out and replaced or flipped hook point up or down as needed.
