I remember when Suzanne Vega brought this out the first time - how shocking and interesting it was. I think really good covers have to find that mind-blowing originality in an entirely new way, and in a way that sounds "right" 50 years later - different rhythms, different sensibility. The joy of a great cover is that it brings an old song to life in a new way. We get to appreciate the exquisite structure all over again - no need to be retro and try to reimagine ourselves into the past..

The song is a cover of Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner (1987). This is a collaboration of two German bands: In the first room AnnenMayKantereit are playing and Henning May (deep raspy voice) is their singer. And in the second room Giant Rooks are playing, Frederik Rabe is their singer. A little later AnnenMayKantereit join them. The guys of AnnenMayKantereit are the older ones.. AMK does mostly German songs, Henning can also sing without that rasp, his voice is amazing, but I like Frederiks voice even more. Giant Rooks do English songs, even though they are Germans as well. One reason why I love Frederiks voice is their cover of Life On Mars (David Bowie): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2seGp3mthqeq8. And my favorite original song of Giant Rooks is Nightingales Of The Walled City: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqaYoYOwdtZjn5I . It is a live performance because they haven't released it.

Oh my... basically correct... but that's not "annemay kanterei" and "the rooks" but "AnnenMayKantereit" and "Giant Rooks" so if you explain something then it should be correct. You can also write "annenmaykantereit" in all lowercase letters - as the band did it sometimes, but the capital letters symbolize the beginning of the family names of the band members, which when strung together form the band name
