I had tiktok for like a month two years ago before I realized if I use this app I will not do anything else and had to delete it. My ADHD brain was so entertained by it, and at the time I had curated a nice feed that I liked, but i got so much dopamine from such fast, varied content that I didn't want to do anything else. Instead of doing something I'd watch people do it. I know I cannot be trusted with endless entertainment

I don't think much people talk about it either, but after scrolling endlessly on it for a good few months (maybe 6 or 8?), I ended up hitting a BIG burnout which was not good for being in college at the time. I didn't want to do any of my work and just wanted to watch funny videos to get me through the week. TikTok is so dangerous with its fast paced videos because of this, *in my opinion*.

I know it's fake but it's really really weird and kind of gross to farm engagement by joking about the idea of a child being severely sexually abused. If it was ONE video it would kind of be fine (jokes in bad taste aren't the end of the world) but when you make dozens of videos with the exact same joke it starts to feel like you're obsessed with fantasizing about a kid who knows an inappropriate amount about sex.

Dude the tiktok-ification of social media makes me want to scream. I’ve had multiple mental health crashes where my anxiety and/or depression have gotten out of hand and I end up paralyzed swiping through KZbin shorts. Because I go to watch one from a channel I actually follow and get stuck swiping through scenes from fuckin game of thrones and house md. There is also the society pressure into downloading every social media app ever just to be connected to stuff like news and what your friends are doing. It's why I stick to KZbin and Discord. I can watch the people I want to watch as well as stay connected with the community I am surrounded by.

Not at all telling you to get back on TikTok (it's for the better), but I found never touching the For You page to be helpful. I know it's stupid, but I genuinely would watch big ol comps here on youtube that people made who had similar ways of thinking and interests as me, I'd follow the people in those videos, and followed enough to have a varied experience on my Following page. I can only assume looking and engaging in only that content would have influenced my fyp, but because I never really looked at it, idk lol

There's no way I've found to disable KZbin shorts on phones, but you can get an extension on Chrome that will do it for you on computers

KZbin really should have a setting where they do not recommend you shorts/you can't see shorts on the platform. I deleted tiktok ages before KZbin had shorts and I did so well for the stretch of time KZbin didn't have shorts. But now it is so much more difficult for.me to remove myself from those shorts because theres no easy way for me to not see them.

This was 65% of the reason I got off Tik Tok. Some of it was every other video being an ad of some kind, the brain rot/doom scrolling, but it always came back to the constant back and forth of emotions. One moment its ruined my entire day, the next its making me feel better, only to ruin my day again a few minutes later. Imagine how many times that would happen in 3 hours. Very glad I'm not on it anymore.

I've pretty much got myself to only using KZbin shorts for 95% of my doomscrolling. Luckily my feed is more on the educational side, (lots of HankGreen) but I do like that youtube tells you how many shorts you watched in a sitting because I've been able to gauge whether I'm doing better or worse that day. It's nice seeing "12 shorts watched" for that day. The crappy part of social media sites these days is that yes, algorithms are usually EXTREMELY on the mark about what you paying attention to certain things looks like metrics wise, but the problem is that if you keep watching something out of sheer aghastness or horror it'll assume that you kept watching because you liked it, and you'll keep getting recommended that sort of thing until it thinks you like something else more. The only solution is to literally ignore stuff you don't want to keep seeing, but that ruins a lot of the fun of discovering new things online

I rarely see thwip videos cuz I’m from tumblr and curate the hyuck out of what I’m watching. It helps as well that I always make the active choice to open or leave it. If I’m going on tiktok I’m deciding if it's to check messages, search for something specific, or to scroll the fyp. I'm not sure when I began having the self control for this, but I'm not complaining. It helps that I have so many activities I enjoy the same as or more than tiktok so there really isn't much to keep me desperate to watch.
