The block wall I'm tiling is below grade. Is it ok to put a coat of Drylock on the wall first?

Love your tutorials Mike. I have to do tile work routinely as a property manager/handyman. I'm skilled but in just a general way. I particularly like the product (and alternatives) references. That stuff can really add up. Do you have a general notched blade guideline you could share? Please keep sharing all the tips and methods....Thanks

I got to admit I am not a full time tile guy, just picket all the things I know from other ones and added some brick laying tricks. If it wasn't over the block work I did I would not have done it. thanks for the comment

Mike - your tip about checking the thinset in water overnight is a great one! In an interior concrete block shower wall, would you recommend any kind of membrane or vapor barrier before tiling? I have a house that is concrete block walls covered with concrete. The previous owners tiled over it in the shower, & all of the tiles fell off. I don't think they used thinset, it looks like they glued it to the concrete & then grouted. It's a mess! After I scrape off the glue & clean it all up, I'm not sure if I should paint on a membrane, or try to put furring strips & hardibacker boards up - what would you do?
@MikeHaduck6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly, can't say from here, they make plaster boards, I would check into that, thanks mike

@@kellygosh9546 Hey Kelly, chancing a callback from 3 years ago, did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm experiencing the exact same thing with this converted hurricane shelter I have. Previous owners built this circular cement block structure, so imagine one wall of the shower being curved cement block, which they painted over and thought, "ew, that's ugly" SO THEY COVERED IT IN DRYWALL MUD, which is now molding and peeling off the wall... Needless to say I'm going to scrape it all off and start from scratch, but I was wondering the same thing about the liquid membrane and perhaps even smoothing out the wall by either grinding it down or adding another layer of cement. If you have any pointers from your project (I know it was a while back) I'd definitely appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Great vid, very informative! I didn't know you could just nail a board onto blockwork ... are they special nails?

+3Vimages yes , called steel or cut nails but you got to wear glasses cause they split and send shrapnel., hope it helps, thanks mike

Hey Mike, I was wondering is it possible to tile over painted block? If not, what would one do to prep such block? I was interested in redoing a shower in my basement.
@MikeHaduck7 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, I take a diamond saw (4 inch) and grind into the wall or use a chipping hammer to the wall and chip it up, then do a little test before you do the whole job, my opinion it has worked for me, I hope it helps, thanks, mike

Not taking a shot but can't you use a tape instead of the story pole?
@MikeHaduck7 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, I understand but it is hard to make mistakes with story poles, the old timers always used them, thanks mike

Hi Mike , Would you say its OK to install ceramic or porcelain tile over a CMU outdoor wall? This is for a half wall with fence topper, no contact with dirt, and has 2' concrete footing. I appreciate your expertise!
@MikeHaduck Жыл бұрын
Hi silver, I don't know , tile outside works a lot better in Florida then it would in Pa, a lot depends on the weather and where, thanks Mike

Is it ever too hot for cementing or brick pointing? red quick dry seems fine but some spots with sakrete veneer mortar mix with additive is crumbly in spots',more water sprayed on brick .
@MikeHaduck3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, I never seen it too hot, it takes cement at least a few days to harden and then 30 days or so to reach its full strength, I never wet brick when pointing, I did a video called," should I wet it first? Mike haduck, probably chimney repair part 10 Mike Haduck would help you wit repoiting brickwork, thanks Mike

Is it possible to put tile over a block wall that has metal horizontal support beams (joist) ? Would you have to put cement board over the metal beams ?
@MikeHaduck8 ай бұрын
Hi NY, I have never recall seeing anyone put tile directly on steel beams, thanks Mike

Thanks for the response Mike. I know my description may not make much sense, if I was able to provide a picture in the comments I would. I can’t find anything on the internet that entails how to go upon installing cement board over metal joist to prep it for tile

How can I drill tile installed over the blocks? I need to install 3 shelves and I don’t have idea how to do it without breaking the tile and going through the block

Is there are thing special needed done to tile over block outside where there are 4 seasons?
@MikeHaduck3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I would say to keep the weather from it, one it gets wet and freezes, it's only a matter of time, thanks Mike
@CRASS20475 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn’t you level the perimeter? If you just set base on concrete, and the floor isn’t level, you have dynamic cuts along the base. I find the highest point of the slab, space up fo my thin set, floor tile ,and level from the top of the base. Set ledger board there, then do the wall. Then float the floor perimeter to level, spaced down from wall tile exactly enough for base, floor tile and thin set. Then slope from the perimeter mud, to drains. Changing bottom cuts look bad and aren’t even acceptable on some jobs.
