Hey starrtile I love your videos! I am 25 and been in the trades since I was 16. Your tile videos have helped me understand so much about pan liners and water protection when I'm out installing in the field. Nothing but Love! I wanted to ask if you had a video on setting large format Tiles on a mud bed ? I am installing a linear drain set up. Mosaic is more forgiving wish the client's would have chosen that !

@@johng.7004 I have one video on my Channel about a month ago with a large format on a shower floor but I had to envelope cut those tile as you would have to do with any tile over about 8 in

I do an install similar sometimes. But I use the obvious materials.. tar paper, wire, sand, Portland cement ect. I stretch the concrete by making level ribbons around the room. Plastic float- aka sanding block lol, steel for finish. Get on the floor with boards to distribute weight, make thinset very creamy, trowel on to wet cement and install. We call it Wetset up in NY. It’s an amazing bond. I never do more than 50ft typically. Anything higher in footage, I’ll let the cement dry. Only thing is you need to know how to trowel wet thinset without pulling up the mud and your mud better be flat lol.

I agree it is very much an amazing bond if it is done correctly... although your way would be a bit of an overkill unless it was on a wood sub floor

@@StarrTile 90 percent of the wet sets are on sub floors, correct. But if the bathroom is on a first floor slab that’s out of level extensively, I’ll pull mud too. It’s just a better more durable outcome. Maybe I’ll post a video of a bathroom floor install on wet cement soon. Some of the old timers use to use a dust method when I first started. They’d pull mud, take a bucket of dry thinset, dust the floor by hand, then sprinkle water by sponge and set the tile with a mallet until flat. They would do this predominately w/ sheet tile. And grout it the same day. 99 percent of the old chiclet tiles we all grew up w/ were set this way. No bleeding of thinset though joints and you are done in 4-5 hours complete on a standard 7 by 5 bathroom. And obviously they could install the walls the next day. I only know a few guys who still do this up here. Different strokes for different folks lol.

@eddiepullman2745 yes some of the old methods were better, and without all the foam and plastic products we have nowadays... but as you said the work that is described with make a young man old very quickly🙈

@@StarrTile What ages me and stresses me out is the walls these builders prep lol. The newer generation doesn’t use shims. They rip out the Sheetrock or wonder board and throw it right back up. They don’t shim, level or anything that gives the tile installation a solid foundation on which to start from. Brand new construction is even worse. I’m 49 so I’ve seen the change in my short experience lol. The craftsmanship is most certainly not the same in far too many cases. I’ve had bathroom walls that had bows that you could put your hand behind. I pack up and have the builder fix it or get someone else. The problem I’m seeing now is a lot of tile guys use clips so the prep guys don’t think the walls being flat is a must. I’m old school. If I’m doing the job complete, there is no bows or bump outs. It’s so easy to fix. But NY is fast pace and far too many companies are lacking basic skills or pride in the prep work. Take care bud… safe trip!

Screed, hard pack,fill and hardtrowel. This was the basic order for mud set. If someone showed up on my tile job to work "in sandles" well he wouldn't be there long. Lol
@StarrTile

@marcconner8382 very typical "work wear" in 3rd world. I don't fault him for what he has on, rather what he does...not packing mortar & no real slurry of thinset...plus no back buttering of tile.

When you think your life is bad, watch this. Reminds me of Mexico where I saw them breaking cement up with a hammer and chisel at my resort. Respect to them, but that work would age your body to no end.

Agreed, after my 20 year history in Jamaica and seeing some of the archaic ways they do work ....although very good...shows what real work is like and no thanks. That's why we always invent new tools and strategies to make it easier 👍🏻👌🏼

This method is similar to the way porcelain paving is laid outdoors, at least here in the UK, but the mortar is generally mixed much better than this in a mixer and poured on a compacted hard core type of base.
@StarrTile
@StarrTile 2 ай бұрын
@@martinwright7093 exactly, that's what I took issue with is that he didn't pack down the mortar very good plus the thinset didn't seem runny enough and he didn't back butter the tile

No it'll last...until it doesn't...the failure is both the method and the heat. Though in others countries I see a very wet slurry of cement and then tile, I think it works better.
