One thing Tim Hortons has done in Canada is somehow make itself part of the Canadian identity. Like, basically going to Tim Horton's is considered patriotic. They've heavily associated themselves with very Canadian sports like hockey and curling. I think it would be difficult to replicate in the US, unless you guys start liking hockey and curling LOL

I'm from Western New York and I kinda feel the same way. Tim Horton's is the one awesome thing that we have that most of the rest of the country doesn't have yet! It's almost like a WNY pride thing to go to Tim Horton's, lets not forget that Tim Horton himself played for the Sabres too! I want Tim Horton's to succeed but at the same time, in a weird way, I sorta don't want them to expand down south or even down-state. NYC isn't WNY and it wouldn't seem right for Tim Hortons to be popular there... F**k the Rangers!

I am Canadian, so I'll give the following information as insight to anyone who hasn't had as much Tim Hortons experience as I. Interpret it however you please. About 15 years ago Tim's coffee was excellent. It was well priced and well made. By contrast, McDonalds was terrible. I remember many years of enjoyment of Tim's coffee. It is also worth mentioning that up here in Canada they are easily as ubiquitous as McDonalds, so you always have the option of either. Maybe about 5 years ago, the Tim's coffee began to decline in quality and the price remained the same (it may have actually increased at the same time). Tim's began phasing in a wider variety of food. However, the food is not particularly good, and it is expensive. I could easily have as much enjoyment from McDonalds food (which is still not much, mind you) but for about 1/3 of the price. At the same time, McDonalds began remodeling their locations here in Canada with nicer interiors, and expanded their McCafe line, filling the void in quality left by Tim's. Now, I will pick McDonalds coffee every time over Tim's because it is a higher quality product, and the other food at Tim's does not attract me. I have also visited several US Tim's locations, mostly in New York State. I can verify that whilst the coffee does taste similar to the Canadian Tim's coffee, the food is somehow even worse. McDonalds' offerings (food and coffee) are still superior, and for a better price. That is all.
@mattbenz997 жыл бұрын
The reason why McDonald's coffee is so good in Canada is because when Tim's dropped their old coffee supplier (you know the good one) McDonald's snatched them up. McDonald's coffee is more authentic Tim Horton's coffee than what you can buy at an actual Tim's. This is why McCafes are opening every where to great success and there is rumors about McDonald's opening up locations that just sell coffee and stuff that compliments coffee.
@charlenestarr29017 жыл бұрын
I agree with you!!! Also it helped MASSIVELY for McDonalds having their free coffee weekends once or twice a year. Tim Hortons awhile ago began making their donuts in a central location and shipped them to the stores so donuts are NOT fresh like they used to be. I remember going to a Tim Hortons in the mornings and having a warm fresh donut many times. Not anymore.
@cb16717 жыл бұрын
Harveer Singh I didn't make any claims regarding the freshness of their food. I was saying I think the quality of their coffee has declined, and that I didn't enjoy their other food offerings because I didn't feel they were very good. I have no knowledge about their supply chain, but I do see the people make the food in front of me (except the donuts, of course). I just don't think the ingredients are good, and I don't like the final product considering its high price.

Tim Hortons has some odd history that you might not understand. So Tim Hortons in the 80s-90s had a more simple menu, very good quality coffee and acceptable other products, great for a big chain. They saturated Canada pretty deeply by the 90s and like you mentioned needed to expand elsewhere to keep that growth. The 90s was the first US bound push, they switched Coffee suppliers, and went with a much cheaper coffee that had a poor taste (you might remember when McDonalds went from bleh to great, well they snatched up Tim's coffee farms) and quickly expanded the menu with low quality bland food, reformulated the donuts to be so sweet they are inedible (to a Canadian palate at least). All their food items went from fresh baked, to frozen and microwaved to be readily accessible to the minimum wage workers.. not I guess its so they could easier control (a lower) "Quality" This was the beginning of the end of the god like status Tim's had in Canada, their rep has been slowly dropping for years. They push new fads, specials, bad unhealthy food and keep failing in the area that made them amazing. I mean, they are still an entity, and people need their coffee, so they do survive and profit, but the line ups that used to happen at Tim's would literally need police supervision at many locations... but not so much anymore. Its just another case of something that made us special was abandoned so it was easier to expand.. and they became just another place, which has allowed Starbucks and countless competition to creep in.

It might depend on the location. The extremely small/kiosk Tim Hortons may have their donuts shipped in pre-made from larger stores, but full-sized stores bake and decorate their donuts in-house. I worked as the baker at a Tim Hortons for years, and the latter was the case at my store. The donuts are "fresh," depending on how you define "fresh." The donuts come in pre-moulded and frozen (in my opinion, anything frozen is no longer fresh). The frozen donuts are pulled from the freezer, nuked in an oven, cooled, and decorated with fondant/sprinkles/whatever. This also applies to the timbits, muffins, bagels, and cookies. I have worked both at a Tim Hortons, and at a MacDonalds, and I would consider the food standards at MacDonalds to be better quality. McD's eggs are fried from fresh, while Tim Hortons bakes frozen pre-made egg patties. McD's protein products (beef, chicken, and fish) are cooked/fried in an average of 2 minutes, whereas Tim Hortons bakes their proteins in an oven for an average of 8 minutes. Also, McD has multiple friers and grills, whereas most Tim Hortons stores are expected to operate with only 2 ovens. The result is that McD is able to cook food very frequently in small quantities, whereas Tim Hortons employees are forced to cook huge quantities less often to avoid running out of product. The chicken and steak at Tim Hortons can end up sitting in the heating cabinet for hours because of this. This is also the reason why Tim Hortons often runs out of product: There are not enough ovens to keep stock full.

I'm from Massachusetts so we've driven up to Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia a few times over the years. There were several Tim Hortons locations in Maine back in 2014 when I went up with the fam. Their food and coffee is pretty good for fast food. Also being from Massachusetts, I can tell you right now there is no way Tim Hortons would be successful here. Dunkin' Donuts locations are so abundant here that you'll often find more than one on the same street in a lot of areas. Everybody I know visits there regularly, many daily, including myself. It's kind of a comfort thing for us, as I'm sure Tim Hortons is for Canadians. Dunkins is as stereotypical to New England as Tim Hortons is to Canada. Starbucks also does well around the Boston area.
@mylifeisntavg5 жыл бұрын
I agree, the video mentions that Tim's has a unique offering compared to Starbucks or McDonald's. However in it's essence its a comfortable warm place that serves warm beverages at a price accessible to all. That's a cold weather necessity in Canada. Recently going down to Phoenix, Dallas and Las Vegas the role of a coffeeshop isn't a place to get out of the cold, quite simply because, the 'cold' isn't something people have to run into a coffee shop to avoid. If Tim's does expand, I think they'll have best results in areas that are cold, and not overly bothered by the fact that the Brand's identity centers around Canadian Nationalism. Perhaps Europe is actually a better bet.
@apoplexiamusic5 жыл бұрын
it's funny because in Québec before the mid nineties or so, it seemes that Dunkin Donuts was way more prevalent than Tim Hortons and gradually, the latter eclipsed DD. The last Dunkin Donuts locations I've seen in Montreal closed about 4 years ago or so, and Tims' keep expanding here by the looks of it.

I thought their food was okay, but not great and some of their baked goods sandwiches seemed overpriced and tasted less fresh and at a lower quality than other competitors. Plus on some rainy days, there were leaks you could see coming down from the ceiling. Honestly felt like they needed to tear the location down and build anew.

The funny thing is the company was named "Tim Horton's" for the longest time, but then the Quebec language police came along and told them they needed to change their name because the 's makes it English and you can't have that in Quebec. Instead of having two different brands they just dropped the ' and are now "Tim Hortons".
@UrFavSangheili7 жыл бұрын
Michael Kalus that seems really stupid to me, the brand is a dudes name not a proper world. Course Quebec has always been a bit odd.
@michaelkalus78027 жыл бұрын
Oh they also went after "Second Cup" in the same vain. They really do not know a limit. Jaques Villeneuve, the F1 racer, had an English named restaurant in Montreal, they went after him too. Heck, 15 years or so ago they got so bored they went into Montreal's Chinatown and demanded that the french names on the restaurants needed to be bigger than the Chinese ones.
@UrFavSangheili7 жыл бұрын
Michael Kalus woooooooooooow that's kinda scummy if you ask me, whenever I went to Montreal I never liked it. Something about the atmosphere was unpleasant though it could be because I don't know french and I dislike how it sounds.
@michaelkalus78027 жыл бұрын
I worked for a company that had an office in Montreal. Most of the software and HW was staged at the office in Toronto, then shipped to Montreal. All was well for years until two bored women at the office called on the language police because, the horror, the keyboards where English and so was most of the software. We had to get a letter from the provider in the US that the software was only available in English and Compaq, the computer supplier, was running around trying to find French keyboards. It's sadly funny.
@UrFavSangheili7 жыл бұрын
Michael Kalus jeez that just sounds like wasted time for the company, they could be doing something important but instead they need to run around like a chicken with its head cut off over English keyboards and software. Are french keyboards all that different from English ones anyway? I know when you press a sequence of buttons it let's you use french letters but i guess that's too convenient for some people.

My parents actually owned three Connecticut stores for a good four years. They had a contract in each location for five years- but in around 2010 (shocker) they abruptly closed the majority of stores in New England, breaking contracts with all their storeowners and giving all their employees and managers no warning. There were stores that weren't making enough, but there was no reason to close them all. They never explained why they did what they did, but up until that point they had been actively expanding and kept giving successful storeowners more stores, hence why we ended up with three. Something's always seemed off about the disastrous way it all ended, and the way they avoided any real explanation, but I still have no answers.

Tim Hortons have just started to expand into the UK too, I live in Manchester and they have opened 5 stores in Greater Manchester alone (they have 17 in the whole country) I’m not sure why they have so many in Manchester but 0 in London. I went to the one near Manchester University and it is a pretty large shop that they have, it was a few days after it opened so it was jam packed with people. It cost me £3.50 for a chicken wrap, that wasn’t even that good maybe a 5/10. The menu was very good for a ‘fast food’ restaurant, and I don’t think many people even consider it a fast food place just because it looks so premium, kind of like Starbucks but with a much larger menu, I think people are impressed by it. SO YEAH that’s my life story thanks for listening.

Four years in the future, and they're still struggling in the US. I'm a Canadian ex-pat living in south-west Michigan, and was ecstatic when they finally moved into the area about 2011. But they bombed! Most of the locations have since closed. It never became a hub like in Canada, with restaurants that are always full. I'm old, so I remember the original Tim Horton's (with the apostrophe) Donuts (they originally had unhealthy "Donuts" as their slogan before rebranding as "Always Fresh"). But that was in the days of fewer locations, each with a dedicated baker making the donuts and cakes (they used to also sell cakes) fresh every day. That doesn't expand well, so they made changes that eliminated the use of bakers at the expense of not as good donuts and no more cakes. They did branch out into healthier fare of bagels and sandwiches, then soups, though. I think it's a case of the beancounters getting control and cutting corners that made things a little bit worst.

We have Tim Hortons here in Maine, but they actually closed several locations in the state recently. I think the reason for their struggle is the massive dominance of Dunkin Donuts. Unless you live in New England, you can't really comprehend just how ubiquitous and successful DD is in the region. It's bigger than Starbucks, bigger than McDonald's, bigger than everything.
@cmanlovespancakes7 жыл бұрын
Yup, I live in Mass, and there is a DD on practically every street corner. They have full market saturation in most of New England and Eastern NY. I heard you can't go more than a couple miles before you come across another DD in the region. They are atarted in the Boston area, as a small shop then expanded. They are still based in Eastern Mass so it makes sense they would dominate in the region.
@humphery19507 жыл бұрын
Actually the reason the locations in Maine closed was the gentleman no longer wanted to run franchises. So closed all that he owned in the middle of the week with out notice. Sadly this has become a popular trend with franchise owners. Has happened with Bojangles' in Central Fl a few years back as well. With over 12 closing in the middle of the day.

US Tim's is very regional right now. Within 15 minutes of my house are 4 McDonalds and at least 8 Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons is huge in the region and have completely kicked Dunkin put of the market. A Tim's next to a Dunkin will have a wrap around line while the Dunkin is empty

This ain't 2002. Tim Hortons has been a large deal in America, for over 15 years now.

I am Canadian . Yes for the most part you where right. But missing out on one big fact. Is they sold their original coffee bean to McDonalds. I think this hurt them in a way. I remember McDonalds was giving away free cups of coffee. To a track customers. Tim Hortons is big around the border states .

Company Man probably could have mentioned that Tim Horton's isn't trying to expand into the US all in one go. Most of their US locations are in Ohio, Michigan, and New York. In Texas, I'm 800 miles from the nearest locations.

Fun fact: for all the Canadians out there, if you want the original Tim hortons coffee pre Burger King merger, go to McDonald’s they got the same suppler.
@KatherineJane0016 жыл бұрын
Tim's is currently on the decline. I've recently read articles about complaints, losing money, and a major drop in quality. I personally used to drink Tim Hortons coffee every day, many years ago. Since Burger King bought it, I find it just isn't the same. It's really hard to put my finger on why it's so different. It doesn't have the same feel it had before, it feels MUCH more commercialized. I believe they brought in too many food options, and it's just changed the whole cozy feel it used to have. I also have noticed a change in the quality of the food, as many people have commented on already.

Tim hortons has become second on the list ....since it has been sold to an American company, in Canada,we dont enjoy the bad service,slow drive thrus, and customer service anymore. I have noticed a BIG change in the quality of the packaging, cups, lids that wont stay on cups...thinner cups too. The donuts are turning into hard, chewy sugar coated candy...blahh. I dont buy the donuts...they are always loaded with way too much glaze...cant taste the donut anymore...but maybe the company want us to not be able to taste the "no fresh" flavour.Anyway, in my opinion...they put Canada on the back burner since being bought by Burger King.

The moral of this story: Never allow an American company to buy your business. American companies are only interested in making huge monetary profits at any cost. American CEOs: "Screw quality for the customers! Make me rich and powerful!"

Tim Horton's had a shop set up in Kandahar, it was flown over by the Canadian military for the troops. Some of the differences in number may reflect the seasonal or temporary nature of some shops. For example, many universities have Tim's in them, but may not count towards the store asset number, or may not include the numerous popups that exist for different events or times of year.

The vast majority of Timmies in the US (though I'm sure not all by any means) are in the states which border Canada. I seem to recall that started even before the big push to expand into the US -- it was more to appease the Canadians who would go border hopping to shop back in the day. And I suppose the Americans who did the same and returned home to a disappointing lack of TimBits.

I know that at this time the video is two years old but I'm from the Detroit area. With a long-standing NHL team (the Red Wings) and a very intense rivalry with Toronto most of that time, we know who Tim Horton is (or, was). Also, being this close to Canada, we have had Tim Horton coffee shops here for quite some time. And as for the other two members of this coalition, Popeyes has only entered our area within the last year or so. Wendy's and/or Burger King have bee here almost since their inception. ... ... ... Great videos by the way. You've got me hooked and I watch three or four more every day.

Buffalo has one on every corner. They only work in northern boarder towns. They tried to go more south in the past, but they quickly closed them. Tim Horton was playing for the Sabres when he feel asleep behind the wheel on the QEW coming back from a game vs the Maple Leafs.

from the buffalo NY area and worked for Tim Hortons for most of 2009 there were back then problems with cars backing up traffic at locations in the mornings because even though the drive thru goes around the buildings it isn't long enough. most of the in flow comes from 5-11 am. locations seem to be placed relatively close to business districts, town halls, police stations, and schools.
