In my personal opinion, I wish the movie had ended right when Red says "I hope" on a bus..... I appreciate the original ending where he finally meets Andy, but I would have loved to imagine their reunion on my own. Some tension of whether or not our heroes will meet again would have been appreciated

@@michaelotis223 ur true, but after wrongly accused and spending years in prison, Andy story deserves happy ending, for Andy, Red is only person which compliments Andy version of happy ending. That's why they have to show the glimpse of Andy like a free bird through Red.

@@raghu22221 Oh for sure! I mean it's secretly Red's story - that's why he's the narrator. He had given up hope for so long that it makes thematic sense to give him a hopeful end like that. Both our heroes had been through a lot and earned that reunion. I just prefer to imagine for myself. I guess I personally don't believe in neatly wrapped up endings lol. But hey this film is still a flawless masterpiece regardless!

I spent 6 months on the set, as a core con. Honestly, I was there for so much ! For example, I was sitting in a general space with Tim, with a few guys who were talking when he looks over at me and says "I'm going down in the hole, don't let any1 come down there. No matter what you hear, what I say, no matter what happens. When I'm ready, I'll come out, but not til then". And I kid you not, when Tim came out he was Andy Dufresne 😮 I knew I was in for some of the most amazing experiences that could never imagine !

I hate prison movies but I watch the last 40 minutes of the Shawshank Redemption over and over. I think we can all relate to wanting to escape whatever "prison" we're in, whether it's a 9-5 job, endless school, bad relationship, etc, to a carefree paradise. And he's right -- it's not tacked on. It's not expected -- it's earned. Very insightful. I thought actors were supposed to be stupid.

Agreed, but I also like that he finds some dignity and purpose even while in prison, so they show you that hope is good but in the meantime there are still good choices and people to help (expanding the library, teaching the young guy how to read and write, getting his fellow inmates a couple beers, etc.)

"Andy" tries to be humble and lay credit to the philosophical idea of the story, however, the REAL reason for the film's tremendous appeal is the brilliant combination of a genius script and screenplay. incredible casting, phenomenal acting, AND the ability of the film director to place the viewer IN THE PRISON , alongside the characters !! Think of how AWESOME and convincing Bob Gunton was as the cruel Warden !!!....."....am I OBTUSE ???.....do you get MY DRIFT? Andy really was screwed one way or another. If he hadn't become so valuable to the warden in the money laundering, there would have been nothing or no one (not even the warden or Hadley) to stand in his way in trying to get a new trial. On the other hand, I doubt Andy would have lived long enough to find out the truth about Elmo Blatch from Tommy had he not helped Hadley keep all of his inheritance. He would have been just another number to Hadley, the warden and the rest of the guards. Bogs and the sisters would have continued to rape and beat him until he died or ended up committing suicide. As Red himself said, had things not started to change for Andy once he became an asset to the warden and the prison staff, Shawshank would have gotten the best of him and ended up destroying him. Another insight from Red.....every man has his breaking point, and Andy might have reached that point much earlier if he did his time as just another prisoner and continued to be Bogs' bitch. Andy pretty much had to take back his own freedom with his own hands since the Warden had been unwilling to let him get it through legal means.

I never understood how Tim Robbins played one of the most beloved roles in cinema history, only to hardly get any big time acting jobs after that. It's weird. One would think he would have become a star. Anyone have any thoughts on why that is?

William Koscielniak true. The way I look at it is; would you rather be in a bunch of mediocre to great movies. Or star in the greatest movie of all time? I'd feel pretty content if I were him.

I would say his look and acting strengths aren't great for a movie star, and the movie itself wasn't a big time hit right away. He's a damn good actor but just not the type to carry a movie and certainly not one where Hollywood felt it could bank on.

Excellent synopsis. One of my top five films to date. Excellent in every way, hard to believe that it was initially panned by critics when it was first released. Excellent screenplay based on a short short story from a master of storytelling Stephen King. So many good films have come from his stories, The Green Mile (also in my top five) being another excellent book to film translation. Both helped by excellent casting and direction.

Great message. I think the course of this movie falls right in line with what Tim Robbins is saying about the movie plot. It was a box office failure....due to poor timing. Jurassic Park, and others, stole all of the glory, as they debuted at the same time. However, in the end, Shawshank came out on top. Playing the long game...

Does anyone ever wanna talk to him about anything other than Shawshank? He's been in other movies. Nothing to Lose was fantastic. His performance in Mystic River and the bit he had in War of the Worlds was unparalleled and yet, one movie from almost thirty years ago is all anyone ever wants to talk about with him. What a waste.

I hear ya. You are happy that Andy and Red are reunited and free, and that Hadley's arrested and the warden is dead, but you are also angry that Tommy got killed for wanting to help Andy, and that Andy (and Red for that matter) will have to spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, especially as law enforcement methods of looking out for fugitives become more and more advanced in the years to come (what will the two of them do if they end up on America's Most Wanted?). Still it's a great film, and Andy and Red both deserved their happy ending. I like to think that they spent the rest of their lives free and happy running Andy's hotel in Mexico, but I also like to hope that Andy has a backup plan just in case.

The craftiness of Steven King. He is such the consumate writer/stort teller. Folk have the impression that Kingonly writes "scary" stuff. His tales are so much deeper than just scary or macabre. He does great charracter dvelopment and gets into their psychology and what is motivating the individual(s). For example, in the story IT, the characters aren't just fighting a supernatural force/being, they're battling their own personal demons, as well. Each one goes tthrough their own epiphanies, dealing w/ internal struggles and coming out stronger and more confident because of their ordeal. How can you not like King? lol Robbins and Freeman did superb acting jobs.

Red: "I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend." I cried when I heard these lines in the movie...

0:19 Huh? Shawshank is a prime example of a studio tacking on a happy ending to a film! Darabont originally wanted it to end on the bus with Red having found hope again and simply *hoping* he would find Andy, which is the point of the film. The studio forced him to change it so the audience would have a neat happy ending. Not saying it isn't earned after all the hardship, but it's way more Hollywood to show that everything worked out, and it's certainly less profound.

This movie is one of the best movies ever made. When I brought it home to play the DVD, I thought, “Oh no, not another Stephen King movie. How many bodies end up killed and how is this going to end.” Well was I surprised. The movie started and mended with me not even moving for the entire length of the film. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were outstanding in the film. So was the head guard, the other prisoners, even Brooks were all wonderful. I cried at the end when Red met up with Andy at the end on the beach in Mexico. “Get busy living. Get busy dying. You’re damn right.”
