Check out The Why Files: OPERATION PODCAST | Deep dives, longer stories, uncensored topics | thewhyfiles.com/podcast
The story of the human race is a story of technology.
One of our ancestors created fire and passed that knowledge along to the next generation. Then the invention of the wheel. Then agriculture, a writing system, mathematics, space travel.
Within our story, empires rise and fall. Technology progresses. Civilizations are born and die. The human race continues to innovate.
All of our innovations are built on previous ones. There could be no aqueduct without the arch. There could be no metal plow until someone learned how to mine iron. There could be no light bulb, no smartphone and no computer without first understanding electricity.
Our progress is linear. It's orderly.
But sometimes an object is discovered that's completely out of place and out of time.
A computer found on a sunken Roman ship. A power plant found in a 100,000-year-old cave. Evidence of a nuclear reactor from over a billion years ago.
These objects shouldn't exist. But they do.
Their existence violates the natural order of human progress.
So if humans didn't create these items, who did?

The Antikythera device was actually designed to tell its users when the next episode of The Why Files would appear. The ancient Greeks loved this show just as much as we do, and according to Plato, nothing pissed them off more than missing an episode.

Where do you think Socrates got the "Allegory of the Cave?" The Why Files! AJ was probably the guy going, "those shadows can't be all there is?! I'm trying to tell y'all! There is so much more out there if we could just unchain ourselves!" But the cave CIA took him out before he could create too much belief in his wild theory. When i say "took him out," I mean they released him to the wild. He then went on to form the first major city state in Europe. You might have heard of it, Rome...

He’s a genius character! Everyone’s inner “devil’s advocate”. I was trying to figure out who voices him, it has to be AJ!! You remind me of a physics professor I had in college when I was studying to be an electrical engineer. He knew all these out-there theories before the internet was what it is today and after class you could or even during it sometime you could get him to go off on a tangent and we would speak for hours. He was absolutely convinced that humanity suffered from amnesia and that there was a catastrophe they wiped out advanced civilizations .

Aliens and/or angels gave us technology and now there is a wool over the average mans eyes for whatever reason. From everything I've heard, I've come to believe that human history is not linear at all. Civilisations in the past, such as Atlantis, had technology more advanced than we have today (publicly at least). The past civilisations all seemed to be much more psychic too, communicating telepathically and healing with energies. We already know that historians/scientists hate being proven wrong. Whenever evidence comes out that the history/science books are wrong, they explain it away rather than update the books, because they can't admit they're wrong, or they want to keep telling a certain narrative.

I wonder how far out of time the Antikythera device is. It's basically constructed of wheels, with notches in them. Once you've discovered the one, then the other, then the motive powers of steam, it's a matter of practice to improve precision. I think our ways of receiving apparently contradictory information about the past is very constrained by the nineteenth century notion that we, in our present day, are at the pinacle of human achievement for all time. Hubristic and unscholarly.

The antikythera mechanism deserves a dedicated episode all to itself. There was a guy in modern times that tried to replicate it and ran into a serious hiccough when he discovered an odd number to one of the gears. A "half" number, to be precise. After much deliberation and many mathematical computations later he worked out that it was used as a divisible for the *exact* timing of the moon rotations and how to predict eclipses. The trick was a tiny switch within the mechanism that told another gear to rotate at a different rate, slowing this one gear down to (what equated as) the exact half tooth needed. How do you make half a tooth on a gear? The ancients knew long before we did

There were geniuses back then who didn't have the advantage of learning from as many geniuses as the ones from our modern times. Every generation stands on the shoulders of the ones before it. I think it's more impressive what we were able to figure out the further back in time you go.

That is so silly, instead of making a gear with twice the teeth, the original creator make a complex mechanism. So either he was bad at math, brass was really expensive or he hated filling teeth. OR Copyright law is that old and that petty.

Too advanced.... the ancient greeks invented the steam engine. The reason that most people don't know this, is that they never saw it as anything more than a toy for entertainment. They never connected the thought that it could be used for any practical purpose. Had they put that thought to it, the industrial revolution could have happened over 1,500 years ago, instead of 200.

Awesome episode! There is a natural reactor in a cave in Gabon Africa. The cave would flood the water would act as a moderator and the nuclear reaction would begin. The heat produced then boil the water away and the reaction would stop. This process repeated for millions of years resulting in the depleted uranium ore. Science rocks!

It may not be grand and it may not be dramatic and it may not be aliens or Atlantis and reptiles or any of the other things people think but I seriously think that there is a lot more to our history than we know. Whatever that is up for grabs but I'll never be convinced that it took some 75 to 100 thousand years for us to figure out how to plant crops and tame livestock and start a civilization.

Indeed. I took an anthropology class in college. It said modern humans just as smart as us go back 150,000 to 200k years, but they just stumbled around the forests & plains in small groups until about 9ish thousand years ago without any kind of written language or anything beyond stone age tools. Seriously??? It justified it by saying those initial advancements were really, really challenging, which is why it took so long, hut once we started written language & other advancements, they snowballed on each other.

After the Toba eruption around 70,000 years ago homosapiens almost went extinct. There was a tribe that survived located in Botswana near the largest snake carving in the world that is about 70,000 years old. This tribe spread their DNA across the planet to every human alive today around 40,000 years ago thus creating Homosapien sapiens. There was another global cataclysm the Oruanui eruption around 26,000 years ago that destroyed any civilization in the Pacific. There are ruins on Ovalau and Tonga that are reminiscent of Stonehenge. I wouldn't be surprised if humans in the past once achieved scientific marvels that we remember now only in myths and legends. If anyone had space faring technology to be able to leave the planet to escape one of those global cataclysms and did and survived and returned to Earth after, they would return as gods and rule over the survivors as such.
