I live in Australia in a big old share house. I recently went away for a week and my landlord rang me the day before I came back to tell me there seemed to be a bird caught in my room and wanted my permission to go in and rescue/release it. I had some freakout thoughts about the possible destruction, but resigned myself to the futility of stressing about it. A few hours later I got an update and was told the magpie (yeah, bigger than a sparrow) had been in the room for about 24 hours, but had now been released back into the wild through an opened window. My return revealed the bird had been on every surface - even the top of my double bass - and somehow managed to shit non-stop for those 24 hours. Apart from a few things knocked off the mantlepiece it took a couple of days to clean up the last bit of excrement. Interestingly, there was no discernible smell. The magpie had found its way into my room down through the chimney even though it had been blocked up - obviously not completely. I have this weird feeling of a bond with this creature who made itself at home in my living space for a day of its life. Nature! It always wins.

When bees swarm like that, it means that they are on the hunt for a new home! They’re just taking a little break to rest or, if they have a queen with them, because the queen can’t fly for a prolonged time. :) They are usually very docile and calm since they don’t have a hive to protect, but it’s still best to just let them be or let a professional handle them.

And never park your expensive car under any tree where they sleep during the day. I once saw a huge migration of flying foxes, who were following the highway north from Brisbane to (presumably, eventually, Frazer Island) which stretched from the outskirts of Brisbane all the way to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland like a black, undulating, continuous river. It was astonishing. Also slightly disturbing when you see that many animals leaving an area all at the same time...we travelled for more than an hour and they were overhead and spread out on either side of a four lane highway the entire way. Literally thousands, if not millions.

At least 12 inches across (because it's legs were spread out). Its body was huge. It had to be the biggest spider ever, and I didn't have a working camera at the time. Also there was no way I was going to stand beside it with something in my hand to indicate scale. We left it downstairs, prayed to all the Gods it wouldn't come upstairs, and bathed out of a bucket for a week (luckily the toilet was upstairs, and downstairs was just recreational area)...one of my kids asked "what does it eat?" and I replied "Anything it wants to"...When I left that house you can darn bet I checked EVERY SINGLE UNDERSURFACE of every chair, table, cupboard, behind the curtains before pulling them down...Never saw it again. P.S. Luckily I have witnesses. Also don't do drugs lol.

I'm from Aus, and used to live in an old cottage. You couldn't keep them out. They'd come inside to shed. Scariest part was finding these large exo skeletons and knowing there was now an even bigger spider somewhere in your house 😆 At least they didn't eat much, unlike the bloody Quendas who'd come in through our cat door and demand food like those monkey's in Bali 😆 cheeky buggars, very cute though, especially when they brought their babies to meet you. They'd be like. "Here's the kids, so gonna need more food tonight. Is it in this container, cos I feel like there's food in here. I'm gonna go ahead and open it cos ur taking too long" ahhh I miss 'em... Sometimes. 💙

People often think at first that they're a giant rat, but they aren't at all. Plus they can get ridiculously tame as you can see from my above comment. Not uncommon for people with bigger bush properties to have regular visits from the local Quendas looking for their nightly hand out. I had several on my property, but only one mother and later her young were ever bold enough to just stroll through my cat door. She'd come in, walk right past the cat and scratch on my jeans to let me know it was feeding time actually! She even nipped me on the ankle once cos I was taking too long opening the rolled oats jar 😆 Quite the little characters they turned out to be.

@@SquirrelThis omg!! those would make me so happy!! I lived on a ranch in California way out in the countryside. So there was lots of wildlife...including rats. One summer, a big rat befriended our dog. The dog would let the rat in through the doggie door to share his kibble. One year, we had opossums that got brave enough to hang out with our cats on our porch and take handouts from us. I've always loved it when unexpected critters get friendly.

Am an Aussie who grew up with huntsman spiders sharing our house and even gave them names. I will always catch them in a glass and put them outside but am now more careful after flicking a monster one from the glass out the back door and 10 mins later felt something crawling on the back of my neck. I was screaming, running around trying to get it off and we ended up catching it again minus one leg and this time I made sure where it landed by hearing the thud. My teenage son is terrified of them and was no help at all, just laughing hysterically at a distance. I am so careful now about knowing where they’ve landed. The sensation of that huge hairy monster, and knowing it had been sitting there while I didn’t know still creeps me out. Still will never kill them though, even redbacks who rarely come in and have a nasty bite.
