Franciscans (Greyfriars) are not monks, they are friars and they live in a friary or a convent, not a monastery, They follow the Rule of Saint Francis. There are also the Blackfriars (Dominicans), they are not monks either. That means they can go outside and preach and do pastoral work. Benedictine monks and nuns follow the Rule of Saint Benedict and so they are cloistered, although there are exceptions, for example, when they might need to travel to study or that they are in charge of a parish or they run a school. They're the ones who live in a monastery - which can be either an abbey or a priory.

It's frankly embarrassing how long it took me to realise they were saying "Friary" not "Fryer-y" and they were looking for a religious complex, not a medieval chip shop.

I could certainly understand it, given how incredibly fast dust accumulates on my own wooden floor despite sweeping every couple of days!! 🙈 And I'm not living in a massive elderly building... But I wondered if it was actually just wear on the glaze, making the tile surfaces extremely matte rather than glossy? Running a damp rag over them restoring the colours temporarily - just like river pebbles that have amazing colours when wet or varnished, but are very dull when dry.
