I remember the first time I went to a luau and I kept saying beforehand how expensive it is. Then once you experience it, you realize that they literally employ an entire village for the event. It's an amazing experience that definitely is worth the money, especially if you've never experienced it before.
@shqa5742 жыл бұрын
I had the same mindset when I first went to a luau back in the 1970s, but it's a buffet and a costume show. Worth the dollars! The only problem was that the luaus were in remote areas. I always stayed in Waikiki, and it s was a bus trip to the luau.

The van was sketchy? Umm how about the whole thing was sketcky. Tim, bro, you got had! 150.00??? What? The buffet look horrid. Looked liked if you had a drink, you paid extra. I wouldn’t be surprised if that couple tell people EVERY DAY it’s their anniversary! Invite folks over for a crap buffet. 150-a head! Lets count the food on offer. Pork was from Costco. Rolls,..well heck you can pick up at ANY store on the planet. Mushy “sticky” rice. Chicken (also) Costco, dry af! And something in banana leaves that doesn’t begin to do the traditional dish…not even close! All the cousins come down to preform a few skits, all for the amazing price of 150. 😏

Just some knowledge for you brother: The blowing of the conch was usually an announcement in Ancient Hawai'i that an Ali'i (Chief/Royalty) was approaching and for the people to prepare. The Haka (War Dance) you witnessed was of Maori (New Zealand) origin if I'm not mistaken. All Polynesian cultures have their own. The prayer before the meal to God (Ke Akua) is called a 'Pule' by Kanaka Maoli or Native Hawaiians. When you mentioned, "E Pule Kakou', is simply translated to , 'Let us pray'. Da Food😂 - Lau Lau (pork, beef, fish, & pork fat wrapped in leaves kinda like spinach), Huli Huli Chicken (Huli - to turn/flip), Kalua Pig (Pua'a in Hawaiian). Too bad there was no Poi or Kalo (Taro), Chicken Long Rice, or Lomi Lomi Salmon with Chili Pepper water. The luau was small but intimate. I'm glad you folks enjoyed your time.

Kalua pork is the protein. Usually a whole pig is rubbed with hawaiian salt and cooked in a pit (Imu) with hot river rocks inside, then covered with banana leaves, burlap and dirt for 8 hours. The dirt is supposed to seal it all up like an oven. It has smoky flavor. Most Hawaiians cook it at home in an oven. Whole pork shoulder rubbed with hawaiian salt and liquid smoke in a covered baking pan with foil for 4 hours. Or in a crockpot for 8 hours or in an instant pot cut in 3 pieces for 2 hours high pressure natural release. The laulau (green bundle) is pork and/ or beef pieces rubbed in Hawaiian salt with a piece of fish. Some people add sweet potato also. Then wrap it in taro leaves and bundled in 2 tee leaves for cooking by steaming or with the pig in the imu. The taro leaves can be substituted with spinach. Taro leaves can be compared to collard greens. It has a distinct taste.

I always wonder if the fire dancers are using real fire or Hollywood prop fire. Does anyone know? Other luau videos I've looked at really seem like they use prop fire, because of a very noticeable blue-ish tint to the fire. I wouldn't be surprised, if it is an indoor luau. The fire in this video does look very real. I'm just amazed at how skilled they are at not burning down all that foliage.
